Complementary Disciplines

The two subjects complement each other - one exploring historical events and trends, and the other understanding how those legacies shape politics today. Postgraduate Programs: MA in History and related fields

The Warwick History MA offers advanced study in history, providing the opportunity to both specialise and diversify, to follow your passion and to try something new. Students are taught by experts in their field, introducing them to their areas of research and what it is to be a historian.

MA in History

The MA programme allows students to study and write about what really enthuses them and to pursue in-depth research on their chosen dissertation topic. Optional modules offer a chronological, geographical, and thematic range of topics, including in modern history, early modern history, global history, and the history of medicine.

Core Module

The new core module, redeveloped for 2026 entry, is called ‘History Writing: Theory and Practice.’ Over two terms, students learn about recent theories and methodologies in history writing to understand human experience and agency, questions of power and knowledge, and conceptions of historical change. This module enables students to prepare for the dissertation research and writing process, covering fundamental themes and approaches to historical research. Interactive workshop sessions support students to develop the skills needed to produce an original piece of historical research.

Specialised Routes

Students have the option to graduate either with an MA in History or an MA in a more specialised area of study. To graduate with a specialised route title, you must pass at least 30 CATS of History modules and complete a dissertation in the relevant subject area.

Optional Modules

Students can take either two or three optional modules. The modules on offer each year will vary according to staff availability and student demand. The suite of optional modules for 2026-27 will offer a chronological, geographical, and thematic range of topics. Students are also able to take optional modules in cognate disciplines.

Finally, students complete a dissertation.

MA by Research in Classics and Ancient History

Students can study the MA by Research in Classics and Ancient History, and choose from a wide range of specialist areas. They have regular monthly meetings with their assigned supervisor. Seminars introduce students to research methods in addition to skills training and career-oriented talks and workshops. Students are also able to attend ‘Work in Progress’ research seminars, which take place regularly during term time and offer the opportunity to learn about the work of others.

MA by Research

Students taking the MA by Research are expected to complete their degrees in one year of full-time study, or two years part-time. Additional support and training, including English language support, are provided by the Department, Arts Faculty and the Graduate School, as well as by History’s many reading groups, seminars, workshops and conferences.
