The Terry Foundation has since been named National Scholarship Provider of the Year.

The Essence of a Terry Scholar: More Than Just a Scholarship

The Terry Scholarship is more than just financial aid; it's a family, an ever-expanding network of Terry Scholar Alumni who maintain active ties to the Foundation and assist current Scholars in many capacities. Selection as a Terry Scholar is not simply based on meeting a single criteria, such as financial need, test scores, or grade point average. Instead, Terry Scholars are chosen because they exhibit a well-rounded personality, possess a strong desire to succeed, and demonstrate leadership. The program has given me more than financial support. Terry Scholars are expected to show LEADERSHIP, SCHOLARSHIP, and SERVICE - to their university, the State of Texas, and the world.

Eligibility Requirements: Paving the Path to Opportunity

The Terry Foundation Scholarship is primarily offered to traditional first-time freshmen who graduate from Texas high schools. To be eligible for the Terry Traditional Scholarship, or Freshman Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Be a U.S. citizen or a Permanent Resident and meet Texas residency requirements.
Applicants must have graduated from an accredited Texas high school or homeschool.

For instance, to be admitted to UNT as a first-time freshman for Fall 2026 by Feb. 1, 2026 and complete the 2026/2027 FAFSA by Feb. due on the last day of February each year.

Restrictions

Unfortunately, there are some restrictions to eligibility. Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, or who do not meet Texas residency requirements, are not eligible to apply. Similarly, the Terry Foundation Scholarship is intended to fund enrollment for face-to-face courses taught in-person and requires Scholars to physically attend class on their Terry-affiliated university campus. Therefore, students planning to pursue a degree that is only offered online are not eligible.

However, if a degree requires a student to take several online courses, they may still be eligible, provided that a substantial portion (at least 6 semester credit hours) of any semester’s course load is in physical attendance on the Terry-affiliated university campus.

The Application Process: A Journey to Becoming a Terry Scholar

The Terry Foundation does not accept applications directly from students. Instead, it authorizes its Terry campus partners to review applications and nominate candidates for interview by the Terry Foundation. Terry Scholarship affiliates at each university review applications and nominate candidates for interviews with the Foundation.

Key Steps in the Application Process:

Apply to a Terry-Affiliated University: The first step is to apply and be accepted to one of the universities partnered with the Terry Foundation.
Complete the University's Terry Scholarship Application: Each university has its own Terry Scholarship application, which can typically be found on the university's financial aid or scholarship website.
Nomination by the University: The university's scholarship committee reviews the applications and nominates a select group of candidates for an interview with the Terry Foundation.
Interview with the Terry Foundation: Multiple interview committees work simultaneously in El Paso, Houston, and Dallas over a two-week period in late March/ early April.
Selection and Award: The Terry Foundation selects the final recipients based on their application materials and interviews.

Example application requirements

For example, the University of Houston requires the following essays:

Essay 1: Tell us your story. (minimum of 250 words)
Essay 2: In approximately 500 words, describe an example of your leadership.

Applicants may also need to provide unofficial college transcript(s), if applicable. AP/IB credits), you must also submit your unofficial college transcript. It is Strongly Recommended to apply for on-campus housing once you have been admitted to UH.

Financial Benefits: A Comprehensive Package

The Terry Traditional Scholarship is a full ride, last dollar scholarship that covers up to eight semesters of undergraduate education. Scholars are awarded variable stipends based on the university’s official on-campus Cost of Attendance and other financial awards received by the Scholar for each academic year (including scholarships, grants, waivers, savings plans, etc.). The Terry Scholarship provides sufficient assistance to cover tuition, fees, books, and reasonable living expenses on campus.

Relationship with Pell Grants

Terry Scholar applicants are encouraged to apply for a Pell Grant if qualified. Pell Grants are federal grants of financial aid to college students whose family income falls below a certain level.

Additional Opportunities: Beyond the Traditional Scholarship

While the Traditional Scholarship is the most well-known, the Terry Foundation also supports other initiatives and opportunities.

Terry-Designated Residence Halls

Traditional Scholarship recipients are required to live on campus, in the Terry-designated residence hall, for their freshman year. After their first year, Traditional Scholarship recipients can live off campus if they wish to do so.

Study Abroad and Other Enrichment Activities

Terry Scholars are often encouraged and supported in pursuing study abroad programs and other enrichment activities that enhance their educational experience.

Maintaining the Scholarship: A Commitment to Excellence

To maintain the Terry Scholarship, recipients are expected to maintain a high level of academic performance and adhere to the Foundation's guidelines. This includes:

Maintaining a required GPA.
Actively participating in the Terry Scholar community.
Demonstrating leadership and service.

Students who fail to meet these requirements may be given an opportunity to bring the grade point average back into compliance.
