Navigating UofL Student Ticket Prices and Availability: A Comprehensive Guide

The University of Louisville (UofL) is introducing significant changes to its student ticket model and associated fees, starting in the fall of 2025. These changes aim to align UofL with other Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) schools, enhance the student game-day experience, and bolster support for UofL Athletics. Understanding the New Student Athletic Fee

Beginning in the fall of 2025, all full-time, in-person UofL students will be required to pay a $200 student athletic fee per semester. This fee is designed to provide new health services and benefits not otherwise available to students. The Board of Trustees approved a Student Health Fee on April 18, 2006, for all students not already covered by a separate fee for selected health sciences students. The fee, implemented in the fall semester, 2006, funded additional primary care services, initial psychiatric consultations, specialty care (dermatology, Ob/Gyn), health education programs and expanded office hours. The university says the new model is expected to "strengthen student support, increase access, and help deliver a championship-caliber experience."

The new athletic fee comes as UofL Athletics projects a $12.5 million deficit in its FY 2026 budget, even with the $5.4 million in new revenue projected from the student athletic fee and a $7 million increase in support from the university, The Courier Journal reported in June. College athletic departments across the country, including UofL Athletics, are facing headwinds as they brace for the new era of revenue sharing with student athletes ushered in by the approval the House v. NCAA settlement. The department has budgeted to spend $167,392,442 for the 2026 fiscal year - $22.36 million more than it planned for in the previous year. The revenue-sharing cap in 2025-26 is $20.5 million and will increase by 4% annually.

Historical Context of Student Fees at UofL

To fully understand the new athletic fee, it's helpful to look at the history of student fees at UofL. At its April 23, 2001 meeting, the University of Louisville Board of Trustees approved consolidating, or “bundling,” tuition and mandatory student fees into a single rate. The action followed hearing strong requests from student representatives for simplifying the tuition rate and fee structure at UofL. The single “bundled” tuition and fees rate allows the University to convey tuition costs with greater clarity to current students, prospective applicants, parents and the public.

In an effort to increase the availability of student services and programming at UofL, thereby enhancing the educational experience for students, the Board of Trustees established the Student Activities Fee beginning with the fall semester, 1978. The fee was approved for students enrolled for twelve or more credit hours and was to be prorated for those students enrolled for fewer than twelve credit hours. Initially, the Office of the President, based on consultation with the Student Government Association, was to allocate revenue from the fee for the Student Government Association budget, student legal services, and student placement services. The Student Services Fee (below) was subsequently split apart from this Student Activity Fee.

To help provide a structurally balanced budget for the Athletics Association, the Board of Trustees, at its May 24, 2002 meeting, approved a $25 increase to tuition. Included in the board action was a four year phase-in schedule from $25 to $50, beginning with the fall semester, 2002. As part of these discussions, the University agreed to consider student requests for extended library hours, promotion of additional university spirit programs, and provision of additional student tickets for basketball games. The Student Athletics Fee was re-authorized by the Board on February 21, 2007.

In response to the Student Government Association’s request for increased involvement in the fee allocation process, the Student Activities Fee was separated into a Student Activity Fee and a Student Service Fee effective with the fall semester, 1998. The severance of the existing Student Activities Fee was collaboratively developed between the Student Government president and the Vice President for Student Affairs.

The New Ticket Lottery System

The $200 athletic fee makes students eligible for the ticket lottery system for all men’s basketball and football home games. This system aims to provide fair access to high-demand games.

How the Lottery Works

The university says the new model is expected to "strengthen student support, increase access, and help deliver a championship-caliber experience." Students who have been to more home games will have better odds in future lotteries. Ville’ns+ members will get an early ticket claim window before the general student body, whose request window will open “at least a week before each game” and will close four to six days prior to gameday.

First-Come, First-Served and Free Admission

Tickets for women’s basketball, volleyball at the KFC Yum! Center, and baseball games will be available for students on a first-come, first-served basis. All other sports are not ticketed and are free to attend.

Ville’ns+ Membership: A Premium Option

In addition to the standard ticket lottery, UofL is introducing an optional premium Ville’ns+ membership that guarantees seats for men’s basketball and football games, a Ville’ns t-shirt, and other perks. The program costs $75 for the year and is capped at 500 student members.

Textbook Information

  • TARC (Transit Authority of River City): Starting April 1, 2025, UofL students and employees must use the Token Transit app for free TARC rides. UofL Cardinal Cards will no longer work after March 31.

      2. Tap the Token Transit "TT" logo above.
      3. Review the transit passes you will receive.
      4. Tap "Redeem" in the Token Transit app to finish adding the passes to your account.
      5. If unable to redeem through link, enter your unique code into the mobile app.
      6. Your pass is now ready. Just scan it from your phone over the card reader when you board any bus, including the 94 Cardinal Shuttle.
      7. The phone doesn’t need a mobile plan.

Weather Preparedness

  • Check the weather app before you leave in case you need to pack a sweatshirt or umbrella. Also, invest in a good pair of rain boots! Campus can have some huge puddles so save yourself before your shoes are soaked!
