Dr. Walter Cooper Scholarship

Named after a distinguished scientist, educator, and civil rights icon, this scholarship recognizes students who embody Dr. Cooper's dedication to community and education. Dr. Walter Cooper is a scientist, educator, and civil rights icon whose lifelong dedication to community and education has made a lasting impact on Rochester and beyond. Born in Clairton, Pennsylvania, in 1928, Dr. Cooper broke barriers throughout his career, becoming the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Rochester. He spent over 30 years at Eastman Kodak, rising from research chemist to a leadership role overseeing thousands of scientists. Dr. Cooper’s influence extended far beyond the lab. A passionate advocate for justice and equity, he served as president of the Rochester branch of the NAACP and co-founded the Urban League of Rochester in 1965. His commitment to expanding educational opportunities led to his appointment as a New York State Regent, where he helped shape education policy across the state. A true man of the times, Dr. Cooper has dedicated his life to uplifting others-especially youth.

IHMC Scholarship

This scholarship is offered by a faith-based organization that believes health is a spiritual matter and seeks to close the gap in health disparities. We are seeking young ladies from all geographic areas, black students of young mothers, single, divorced or widowed.

GWUL/Thursday Network Scholarships: The Greater Washington Urban League (GWUL) and its young professionals’ auxiliary, Thursday Network, award scholarships to college-bound and currently enrolled undergraduate students who live or attend school in Washington, D.C., Prince George’s County, MD, and Montgomery County, MD. Ranging from $1,000 to $8,000.
Northwest Indiana Horizon Bank Scholarship: This scholarship encourages minorities to pursue higher education. It is NOT MANDATORY that the student major in banking or a closely related field, but extra consideration will be given. Based on the content of the essays and meeting the eligibility requirements, five (5) non-renewable scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000.00 each.

The Akron Urban League Scholars Academy

The Akron Urban League Scholars Academy is a comprehensive program designed to support Summit County scholars in grades 9-12 in their college and career decision-making process. Akron Urban League Scholars Academy program provides support and guidance to Summit County scholars in grades 9-12, around their college and career path decision-making process. We aim to expand their college or career readiness skills through experiential learning, workshops, mental health supports, and mentorship sessions that provide growth and learning opportunities.

Time Commitment

The Scholars Academy holds dedicated sessions twice a month-one for 9th and 10th graders, and another for 11th and 12th graders-on Mondays and Thursdays. Students who complete the digital form and attend the orientation will be fully enrolled in the Scholars Academy program.

Scholars Academy and Scholarship Eligibility

High school seniors enrolled in the Scholars Academy program will be funneled into the Annual Scholarship Program. Students who complete the Scholars Academy program, and complete the Annual Scholarship interview process, will receive scholarship funds.

Students who cannot commit to the full Scholars Academy program are still eligible to receive a scholarship by applying during the Scholarship Program window (Dec.1 - Feb. 15). Any high school Senior can apply for an Akron Urban League Scholarship if they meet the following requirements: High School Senior, graduating in Spring 2025, a Summit County Resident, Enrolled in an accredited 2-Year college/university, 4-Year college/university, or trade program, Earned a minimum 2.5 Cumulative GPA.

Scholars Academy participants will earn scholarship dollars upon successfully completing the program. The amount awarded will depend on several factors, including performance in the interview and essay portions.
