Navigating Freshman Dorm Life at the University of Rhode Island: A Comprehensive Guide
Embarking on your college journey at the University of Rhode Island (URI) is an exciting chapter. Your on-campus residence hall will be the place where you meet lifelong friends, share common interests, explore new ideas, and build a strong foundation for your college experience. Many of URI's residence halls are either renovated or brand new, and some are certified as environmentally “green.” To make this transition as smooth as possible, this guide provides essential information and tips for navigating freshman dorm life at URI.
Understanding URI Dorm Basics
URI dorms are similar to most college housing options. Most on-campus residence halls include singles, doubles, and suites. Floor plans vary from residence hall to residence hall. It’s important to note that the University of Rhode Island (URI) dorms dimension depend on the residence hall. This information is usually contained in one of the dorm room tours of University of Rhode Island (URI) on CampusReel. You’ll have to watch the CampusReel videos to see for sure.
Move-In Essentials and Tips
Move-In Time Selection
Select your move in time in URI My Housing. Move-In Time Selection opens August 5th-7th on a staggered schedule to manage system traffic. If you are not able to complete this at the time designated, don’t worry! You can select your move-in time at any point after the start time. If you have submitted a room change request that has not yet been honored, please select a move-in time for your currently assigned hall. If your preferred time isn’t listed, it is full.
What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind)
Pro-Tip: Stick to the Basics! Please bring only the basic items with you on your Move-In day. During the first few weeks of school, you will be able to determine which additional items you need to get for your room.
Bed Specifications and Furniture
*Our twin XL beds are adjustable and will be set at a level to allow 30″ of storage underneath the matress. If you would like to request a lofted bed, there will be a furniture request form in MyHousing during Move-In. Furniture has been assembled to ensure safe setup for use. Should you wish to rearrange the furniture that requires dismantling or additional furniture (i.e.

Packing Smart
Recycle packaging and cardboard at home, before you arrive on campus. This will save you trips to designated cardboard recycling areas. You can pack using items you are bringing to campus such as backpacks, duffel bags, suitcases, laundry bins and other storage containers. If you pack your belongings in labeled, sealable containers, you can easily transport your belongings and ensure that everything stays dry if it rains on your Move-In day. Sealable plastic containers that are 12″ high by 18″ wide by 36″ long will easily slide underneath a bed, while 18 gallon/72 quart containers fit in the bottom of your wardrobe or closet. Twin XL beds are adjustable in height and will be set at a height to allow for 30″ of storage underneath.
Shipping Items
Shipping items to campus: Students may have packages sent to Union Express beginning in late August.
Early Move-In
It’s getting closer! All new resident student IDs will be active on January 18th for the spring semester. For our current students, if your personal circumstances require you to move earlier, we can accommodate that. Please log into MyHousing and complete the J Term application to activate the ID to access your room. It usually takes just one business day to process. Winters in New England can be unpredictable. It’s a good idea to ensure the weather will not impact your travel plans. If you need to adjust your move-in date, you can complete the J Term application to move in ahead of any weather event.
Roommate Relations
Need a Roommate? Roommates who connect with one another before coming to campus have more positive living experiences and build stronger relationships.
A Student's Perspective
One student shared their experience: "I lived there for a semester not long after the pandemic began. I was in a single dorm, and when I walked in for the first time I joked with my girlfriend about it looking like a jail cell. Over time though, I grew very comfortable in there and turned it into my own little home. I think of it fondly there, and the RAs are all very nice. I got locked out of my room on 3 separate occasions in those few months because I kept forgetting my keycard inside and they always came as quickly as they could to come and help me get back in. The Wi-Fi service is pretty good, couldn't complain. The IT folks will help you get it up and running if you call, and the wait is only bad if you call at a busy time of year/day. The walk to Butterfield Dining Hall is only a few minutes, which I appreciated in the fall-winter semester when it got pretty cold. During the spring it's a beautiful area to walk around. The bathrooms are unfortunately communal and I was the only one who really cared enough to clean my suite's bathroom, but the other guys weren't terribly disgusting or obnoxious at least. I did the minimal work to keep it looking okay and cleaned it a few times over the course of the semester. It's right next to the fitness center and a short walk over to the stadium if you're into fitness or sports. As well, the people inside were all pretty nice, albeit isolative because the social circles in college close up pretty fast sometimes. That was just my experience, though. The beds are not going to be comfortable, but that's just to be expected in a freshman dorm I think. Also you definitely want to find a couple nice tall sheets for the bed, and a couple good pillows/blankets. The neighboring buildings would get kinda loud from parties so I recommend closing the windows at night, unless you don't care about that sort of thing."
