Coursework and Unit Requirements

To be a competitive transfer applicant, you should take a full load of college classes (14-16 units) each semester. Students are expected to have earned a grade of C or better in at least three years of high school mathematics, including Advanced Algebra (Algebra II). While no specific curriculum is prescribed outside of mathematics, admitted students typically pursue the most rigorous program available to them in English, science, social studies, foreign language, and the arts.

USC accepts both sophomore and junior transfers. Admitted students typically have a full year of college coursework under their belts. Students with fewer than 30 semester units can also apply for transfer to USC, but these low-unit transfers will have both their high school and college academic records under consideration during the admissions process. If fewer than 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of college-level work have been attempted, then you must meet both transfer and freshman entrance requirements. Hours on a pass/fail basis or from remedial coursework do not count towards the 30 semester hour requirement.

Transfer students must complete a minimum of 64 units in residence at USC, or half the units typically required for graduation. A few exceptions are noted below:

Engineering “3+2” Program: Students must complete a minimum of 48 units in residence at USC.
Bachelor of Architecture: Students must earn at least 80 units at USC.

USC does not honor other colleges’ academic “renewal” or “forgiveness” programs that permit students to improve a substandard grade. If you repeat a transferable course for which you earned a grade of D+ or lower, both grades will be included in your transfer GPA.

California Community College Students: USC maintains credit articulation agreements with several CCCs. You can also create a personalized transfer guide specific to your major.
Students from Other Universities: You may find your schools and courses listed in the articulation history database. However, don’t worry if you don’t see your college or classes here - that doesn’t mean your credits are worthless! It simply means that USC will need to review your courses individually to determine transferability of credits.
Online Courses: Be careful when taking online courses! Sometimes, credits from a traditional course will transfer, but credits from an online version of that course will not.
