USFCA Student Employment Opportunities: A Comprehensive Guide
For students at the University of San Francisco (USFCA), various employment opportunities exist both on and off campus. These opportunities provide valuable experience, financial assistance, and the chance to contribute to the university community and the wider world. This guide provides a detailed overview of these opportunities, eligibility requirements, and important regulations.
On-Campus Employment
A wide array of on-campus jobs are available through the University's administrative offices and academic departments. These positions offer students the convenience of working within the university environment, allowing them to balance their studies and work commitments effectively. Most students are able to find on-campus employment through the student employment listings. Refer to Student Employment's Find A Job webpage for available job opportunities. To access the job listing page, students must have an address in their MyUSF portal.
Eligibility and Requirements
Several factors determine a student's eligibility for on-campus employment. These include financial aid status, visa status (for international students), and adherence to specific employment regulations.
Federal Work-Study (FWS)
Students who are recipients of Federal Work-Study (FWS) are eligible for on-campus employment, provided they complete all financial aid requirements. These requirements can be found under the "Self-Service" and "Financial Aid" tabs of Banner Self-Service (Student).
International Students
The eligibility of international students for on-campus employment depends on their visa status.

- J-1 Visa Students: J-1 degree-seeking students are generally eligible for on-campus employment. However, it is crucial for J-1 students to verify any restrictions on on-campus employment with their ISSS (International Student and Scholar Services) advisor or their visa sponsor.
- F Visa Students: F and J students may work up to 20 hours per week on campus while classes are in session. During school vacations such as summer, intersession, and spring break, F and J students may work on campus up to 35 hours per week if enrolling in classes the following term.
Social Security Number (SSN)
International students seeking on-campus employment must obtain a Social Security Number (SSN). The process involves several steps:
- Submit your On-Campus Employment Confirmation Letter (SSN) to our front desk on UC 5th floor to be signed by our office.
- Once you have received the signed letter back from ISSS, you are ready to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN).
Work Hour Limitations
Student Employment and immigration regulations impose limitations on on-campus employment work hours to ensure students prioritize their academic responsibilities.
Off-Campus Employment Opportunities for FWS Recipients
Students receiving Federal Work-Study (FWS) have the opportunity to work for one of USFCA's FWS off-campus partners. These partnerships provide students with valuable experience working for government, private non-profit, and public interest agencies. This not only provides financial support but also allows students to contribute to the community and gain practical skills in various fields.
