Navigating UTA Nursing Scholarships and Financial Aid: A Comprehensive Guide

An excellent education should be accessible to every student. The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) strives to make this a reality by combining nationally recognized academics with affordable college experience in Texas. Through generous financial aid packages and scholarships, UTA aims to keep costs low. Graduating with less debt provides more freedom to pursue your goals. Effective planning is fundamental when funding your future.

Affordable Education at UTA

UTA is committed to providing a nationally recognized academic experience at a competitive cost. The university offers over $500 million in financial aid and over $40 million in scholarships each academic year.

Key Initiatives for Affordability

  • Guaranteed Tuition Rate Plan: Lock in your tuition rate and avoid future increases.
  • Blaze Forward Program: This program makes it easier for eligible students to get a world-class education at UTA. Using a combination of grants, tuition waiver and scholarships, the Blaze Forward Program provides students meeting all eligibility requirements with funding that will cover 100% of their tuition and course fees for fall and spring semesters. The Blaze Forward Program does not cover other expenses including but not limited to housing, meals, and textbooks.

Understanding Financial Aid Options

Financial aid comes in various forms, each with its own terms and conditions. It's crucial to understand these differences before accepting any offer.

Grants

Grants are typically need-based aid that does not require repayment. They can be funded by the federal government, state government, or the university itself.

  • Federal Pell Grants: These grants are available to undergraduate students seeking their first bachelor's degree and are based on the Student Aid Index (SAI).
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG): These federal grants are offered to assist undergraduate students with exceptional financial need.
  • Texas Public Education Grants (TPEG): These grants are designated to pay tuition and fees and are available to both graduate and undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Mav Grants: These grants are designated to pay tuition and fees and are available to both graduate and undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need who are bona fide Texas residents.
  • TEXAS Grants: Toward Excellence, Access, and Success (TEXAS Grant) is available to undergraduate students who are pursuing their first degree and meet both specific academic criteria and demonstrated financial need.
  • Federal TEACH Grant: This grant is available to undergraduate and graduate students who plan to teach in designated shortage teaching areas at low income Title I schools.

Scholarships

Scholarships are gift money for college. They are awarded to students who meet specific requirements established by the sponsor, such as academic merit, leadership, or specific program enrollment. Students may apply for multiple scholarships.

Beyond transfer scholarships, PTK also offers competitive scholarships available to students for academic excellence, leadership, service, and career readiness.

Loans

Loans are another option for those seeking financial aid. Loan programs are often designed to include all the resources you need from start to finish. For those depending on loans, there are generous repayment programs available to help reduce the out-of-pocket expense.

  • Subsidized Loans: Subsidized loans do not add interest while a student is attending college.
  • Unsubsidized Loans: Unsubsidized loans charge students interest while they are attending college, so the interest is growing on the loan during that time.
  • Army Nurse Corps’ Health Professions Loan Repayment Program: This program offers various repayment levels for Active Duty or Army Reserve healthcare workers.
  • HRSA’s Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program: This program will repay 60% of a registered nurse’s remaining nursing education loans once they complete a two-year service contract in a designated Health Professional Shortage Area.

Work-Study Programs

Work-study programs offer students the opportunity to work part-time while attending college, earning money to help cover expenses.

Nursing-Specific Financial Aid

For students specifically pursuing a nursing degree, there are additional resources available.

  • American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Scholarships: AACN outlines an extensive list of scholarships and other financial aid options for prospective nursing students including those interested in earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. AACN and Hurst Review Services partner to offer a scholarship to outstanding entry-level nursing students.
  • Healthcare Organization Tuition Reimbursement: Many healthcare organizations and hospitals have such a high demand for nurses that they have included career development benefits like tuition reimbursement.

Application Process and Important Dates

To maximize your chances of receiving financial aid, it's essential to understand the application process and adhere to deadlines.

  • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid): You can begin applying for federal financial aid for the 2026-2027 school year by completing the FAFSA. The 2026-27 FAFSA form is available to compete on StudentAid.gov. This application will apply you for financial aid for the summer 2026, fall 2026, and spring 2027 semesters. UTA will begin receiving completed 2026-27 FAFSA forms in November 2025.
  • UTA Priority Date: UTA's 2026-27 priority date is March 1, 2026. In order to maximize your consideration for grant funding for the 2026-2027 aid year, complete a 2026-2027 FAFSA, turn in all requested documents, and be admitted to UTA by March 1, 2026.
  • Scholarship Deadlines: To be considered for UTA's merit-based scholarships, students must turn-in all documents required by UTA Admissions before the scholarship deadline.
  • Students can apply for general university scholarships year-round but are encouraged to apply when accepted to the university.
  • Required Documents: Visit UTA's Forms page, located under Apply for Aid, to download the form(s) we've requested.

Tips for Scholarship Success

Thinking about applying for scholarships can seem overwhelming, and students have many excuses for not applying. There are so many scholarships available for college that knowing where to start is the first obstacle to the process.

  • Start Early and Research Thoroughly: Searching for scholarships today is much easier than in the past. The Internet has changed the search process.
  • Build a Strong Profile: Scholarship committees want to give their money away to deserving students. It’s your job to properly sell yourself so they know why you are the right choice. Build a profile that can’t be ignored, one that showcases your originality, your character, and your drive to be successful.
  • Avoid Common Mistakes:
    • Deadlines: Don’t miss them!
  • Utilize Online Resources: Scholarship Junkies, Unigo, Fastweb, and Fin Aid are examples of online resources for finding scholarships to apply for.
  • Never Pay for Scholarship Searches: Never pay for help to search for scholarships. The Scholarship Fraud Prevention Act of 2000 was passed to help increase the penalties for people convicted of scholarship fraud.

Understanding Loan Responsibilities

Before accepting an offer of assistance, it is important for a student to understand what each possible offer means and what the student’s responsibility will be after accepting the offer.

  • Interest Rates: Understanding interest rates and how they impact student loans is essential. There is a difference between a flat/annual interest rate and a compound interest rate.
  • Subsidized vs. Unsubsidized Loans: The key difference between unsubsidized and subsidized loans is the amount of debt a student will leave college owing.
  • Repayment: It is important to think about how much could you afford to pay monthly on a student loan once you have completed college. It’s easy to do the math on loan costs. The Smart Student’s Guide to Financial Aid has a free loan calculator that will do the work for you.
  • Repayment is Expected: It is also important to realize that even if you don’t finish college, you will have to repay a loan taken out for college. The US government backs loans that are taken out through FAFSA/Federal Student Aid. The government has the authority to garnish wages and withhold tax returns as part of the repayment of loans that are not paid.

International Students

The U.S Immigration and Naturalization Service requires that you show proof that adequate resources are available to meet their first year of educational and living expenses. For future international undergraduate students, current estimated cost is $42,706. For future international graduate students, current estimated cost is $41,230. A completed financial statement form must be completed and returned with the indicated documentation before an I-20 can be issued. On an F-1 (student) visa, you must have established transfer eligibility before transfer is initiated by UTA by submitting a school transfer notification.
