Configuring Your UTA Student Email Account

This article provides a comprehensive guide to setting up your University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) student email account. It covers initial setup, manual configuration, and troubleshooting common issues to ensure a seamless experience.

Initial Setup and Important Considerations

Before diving into the configuration process, there are a few crucial points to keep in mind:

  • Username Uniqueness: Your username must be unique and consist of 5-15 characters. It can include letters, numbers, dashes (-), underscores (_), and periods (.).
  • Password Security: The University of Texas at Arlington will not have access to your password. Never share your username and password with anyone else.
  • SciFinder-n Account: Each individual must have their own SciFinder-n account. Academic use of SciFinder-n is restricted by conditions you agree to upon logging in, so make sure to read and be aware of these conditions.

Automatic Configuration

In many cases, email clients like Thunderbird can automatically detect and configure the necessary settings for your UTA student email account.

  1. Open your email client (e.g., Thunderbird).
  2. Add a new account.
  3. Enter your UTA email address and password.
  4. Thunderbird will fetch all the correct details automatically.
  5. Verify the details and click OK.

Manual Configuration

If automatic configuration fails or if you prefer to configure your account manually, follow these steps:

Identifying the IMAP/SMTP Server

There are two methods to identify your specific IMAP/SMTP server:

Method 1: Using the Web Interface

  1. Log in to your UTA student email account through the web interface.
  2. Notice the URL of the page after logging in. It will resemble somehost.outlook.com. For example, it might be bl2prd0102.outlook.com. This is your IMAP/SMTP server.
  3. An alternate way to get this information is to log in to the site using IE and then click on the downward arrow near “About” to get the server name.

Method 2: Using Generic Server Details

If you cannot obtain the specific server name, you can use the generic server details:

  • IMAP server name: imap.exchangelabs.com
  • Port: 993

Configuring Your Email Client

  1. Open your email client (e.g., Thunderbird).
  2. Navigate to the account settings.
  3. Choose to set up the account manually.
  4. A dialog box will appear, asking for information. Enter the required details and press "Continue."
  5. If the email client detects the wrong settings (e.g., if the server is mavs.uta.edu), proceed with manual configuration.
  6. Ensure that the "Incoming" option has IMAP as the preferred protocol. By default, Thunderbird might select POP; if so, select IMAP.
  7. Click on "Manual Setup." This will open the Account Settings dialog box.

Server Settings

Incoming Server (IMAP)

  1. In the Server Settings option, enter the IMAP server name you identified in the previous step (either the specific server from the web interface or the generic imap.exchangelabs.com).
  2. The port will depend on the method you chose to identify the IMAP/SMTP server. If you are using generic server details, enter port as 993.
  3. Under Security settings, select SSL/TLS as Connection Security.
  4. Under server settings, check both the two checkboxes - check messages at startup and check every 10 mins.

Outgoing Server (SMTP)

  1. Click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) option.
  2. Enter a valid description (e.g., "GoMavs").
  3. Enter the server name as the SMTP server you found in the previous step.
  4. Enter port as 587.
  5. Uncheck “Use secure authentication”.

Troubleshooting

  • Incorrect Password: In the account settings, if you type the wrong password, all buttons will be grayed out.
  • UTA’s OIT FAQ: UTA’s OIT has a FAQ page that has instructions for connecting but they have pointed it to a wrong url. It gives the instructions for an Apple iPhone. However, you can still access the functionality using the menus.

Advanced Settings

The above steps cover the basic setup. You may want to tweak other settings for the best experience. One common issue is that Thunderbird and Exchange use different folder names, which can cause duplicate folders.
