Utah State University provides resources to guide students through the process of finding and applying for study abroad programs. The study abroad department within the Office of Global Engagement provides advisors to assist students. These advisors meet with students to help them find the study abroad options that would be best for them and to know what resources are available.

Navigating the Study Abroad Landscape

To help students navigate the initial stages of exploring study abroad, the Office of Global Engagement offers advising sessions. Katie Davidson, a senior study abroad advisor, explained that advisors have a checklist to go through with students for the first appointment to help them learn about studying abroad. “That’s been really helpful kind of giving them the basics of study abroad, ‘Here are the things you need to know to get started’,” Davidson said. After the initial appointment, advisors will be there to support the students throughout the application process.

The Transformative Power of Studying Abroad

Studying abroad offers a wealth of academic and professional advantages. As Davidson shared from her own experience, “Studying abroad really helped me get out of my comfort zone, become more independent and assertive and learn how to do things on my own.” This personal growth, coupled with the academic and professional skills gained, makes studying abroad a truly transformative experience.

Exploring Program Options: Finding the Right Fit

USU offers a variety of study abroad program types to cater to diverse interests and academic goals. Here are some of the options available:

Faculty-Led Programs: Learning in a Group Setting

“The faculty-led programs are opportunities to go with a group of USU students and USU faculty,” Galvydis said. These programs provide a structured learning environment with USU faculty guiding students through specific academic topics in an international context. Some examples of this year’s upcoming faculty-led programs are a Mediterranean diet program in Greece, Christianity and Abolitionism in England, sustainability and peace in Israel and Palestine and introduction to coral reefs in Australia.

Exchange Programs: Immersing Yourself in a Partner University

An exchange program gives students the chance to study and spend a semester or year abroad at one of USU’s partner universities, Galvydis said. This provides a truly immersive experience, allowing students to integrate into the academic and cultural life of another country. At some point, a student from that university comes to study at USU. USU students have access to the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), which connects students to universities all around the world, even if USU doesn’t have a direct partnership with them.

National Student Exchange: Discovering Opportunities within the US

Similar to ISEP, the National Student Exchange gives students the opportunity to do an exchange at universities within the US. This option is ideal for students who wish to explore different regions of the United States while earning USU credit.

Direct Programs: Flexibility and Variety

“Our direct programs, they have programs that are anywhere from a couple of weeks to a semester or a year,” Galvydis said. “Many different places, lots of course options, so that direct option, it really covers everything in between." Direct programs offer a wide range of options in various locations, allowing students to tailor their study abroad experience to their specific needs and interests.

Overcoming the Affordability Myth

Studying abroad is an opportunity open to every student. Different programs have varying costs, which make them more accessible to those who may think studying abroad is not affordable. “I think a big myth about study abroad is that it’s just super expensive, and there are certainly very expensive programs out there,” Davidson said. “But there’s also a lot of really affordable programs, and many of our programs are based on USU tuition and fees."

Take the Leap: Embark on Your Global Adventure

“Just to take the leap and do it. I feel like students think it’s not an attainable goal, and it absolutely is,” Galvydis said. “It can be affordable, it can help them progress in their degree, it can help them progress personally beyond what they’ve imagined."

Life in Logan: A Hub for Recreation and Culture

While considering study abroad, it's important to remember the vibrant life that awaits students in Logan, Utah. The picturesque location in a fertile valley surrounded by mountains creates ideal opportunities for recreational activities such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and kayaking in Logan Canyon. The canyon entrance is 10 minutes from the Utah State campus. Logan is home to the Utah Festival Summer Opera, Lyric and Ellen Eccles Theaters and the American West Heritage Center. Other nearby activities include swimming and boating at Bear Lake and canoeing and bird-watching on the Bear River. The international student council is active in planning many cultural events, recreational activities and excursions to nearby sites. Students can attend many university performances, such as theatre and music, for free. Sporting events are also free to attend for students. Campus Recreation organizes a number of outdoor trips for a small fee and students can rent all kinds of outdoor gear. Students can also rent a Mongolian-style yurt on the weekends.

Study Abroad Fair: An annual event where students can meet with study abroad advisers, faculty leaders, and program providers to learn about different programs and opportunities. There will be a study abroad fair held on Wednesday, Jan.
Study Abroad Advisers: Dedicated advisors within the Office of Global Engagement who provide personalized guidance and support throughout the application process.
