Navigating UTRGV Student Employment Opportunities
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) offers a multitude of employment opportunities for its students. Student employment can be a fundamental part of a student’s educational experience, promoting engagement and providing professional development opportunities in an effort to retain, graduate, and prepare students for the workplace. Being employed at the university not only provides students with extra money. This article serves as a guide to understanding the various options available and how to navigate the application process.
Types of On-Campus Employment
UTRGV provides several distinct avenues for on-campus employment, each with its own eligibility requirements and characteristics.
Work-Study Jobs

UG Research Assistants
Undergraduate Research Assistants shall engage in research as assistants to members of the faculty or administration of the University. Appropriate service for an advanced research assistant may include the carrying out of independent research under the guidance of a faculty member. Students may not hold an additional assignment under an exempt position.
AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps is a program in which UTRGV students assist high school seniors with their college enrollment process. This program is not associated with Work Study programs or direct wage employment offered by UTRGV.

Available Positions
The university offers diverse roles across various departments. Here are some examples of positions that have been available:
- Vice Dean, College of Health Professions: The Vice Dean serves as a senior academic administrator responsible for supporting the Dean in providing strategic leadership, academic oversight, and operational management for the College of Health Professions.
- Assistant Professor, School of Medicine (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Genetics): The UTRGV School of Medicine seeks a faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor for teaching Biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics. Experience teaching in an LCME accredited medical school is preferred.
- Assistant Professor, School of Optometry: We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Optometry’s student body as an Assistant Professor beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year. The non-tenured faculty member will have teaching duties in both the didactic and clinical component of the curriculum.
- Administrative Support: To provide skilled administrative support and routine administrative support to the head of a large department and the departmental staff and/or faculty in an academic or non-academic area.
- Physician, Department of Primary & Community Care: The Department of Primary & Community Care, Division of Primary & Preventive Care, is seeking a full time Physician for a medical school affiliated primary care clinical practice located in the Rio Grande Valley.
- Residential Community Director: To oversee the day to day operation of a residential community housing between 150 and 400 college students, faculty and staff residing in the student residence hall or residential complex.
- Medical Technologist: To perform and interpret analysis on patient specimens through the use of complex laboratory techniques.
- Chair, Surgical Specialty and Musculoskeletal Integrated Service Unit: The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Chair for the Surgical Specialty and Musculoskeletal Integrated Service Unit.
- Program Support: To provide support in the operation and coordination of a program or multiple projects.
- Post-Award Grants and Contracts Administration: To provide professional support related to post-award grants and contracts administration.
- Security Solutions Specialist: Responsible for the implementation, configuration, operation, and ongoing maintenance of the various security solutions and the identification, investigation and resolution of security events detected by those systems.
- Security Analyst: Responsible for assisting with the development, implementation, monitoring and support of digital access control, data confidentiality, system integrity, system reliability, system audit, recovery methods and procedures.
- Accountant: To perform professional accounting work in specific assigned area. Responsible for the accurate, timely, and compliant preparation of financial statements, fiscal reports, and analytical insights that support executive decision making and institutional strategy.
- Admissions Counselor: Provide professional knowledge and counseling skills regarding the institutional admissions, academic programs, financial aid and scholarship process.
- Project Manager: To oversee and provide management support in all aspects of project management for the construction of all University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) facilities. Manages multiple large and complex projects with a focus on highly technical, mission-critical, and sensitive initiatives.
- Special Collections Assistant: To manage daily operations related to the digitization, organization, and access of special collections materials.
- Graduate Studies Program Administrator: To perform advanced program administration for Graduate Studies within the Robert C. Vackar College of Business & Entrepreneurship, including development and coordination of recruitment, admissions, advising, enrollment management, and degree completion processes.

Work Hour Limitations
You cannot work an average of twenty hours per week. For example, you cannot work 15 hours one week and 25 the following week. You cannot work 21 one week and 19 the next. USCIS permits full-time employment (21-40 hours per week) during vacation periods and summer. International students are not required to enroll in the summer sessions. International students can work in the summer if they have an employment offer. If the employment offer requires *enrollment, then, the employee must meet this condition. *Certain Job Positions require enrollment. Employment without enrollment will not jeopardized the student's immigration status. Summer employment will be approved by ISS as long as the student is already enrolled for the upcoming Fall semester. As an institutional policy, undergraduate students will not be allowed to work their first semester.
International Students
International students may find it challenging to find jobs on campus. To start your job search we recommend that you visit the Career Services Office. It is imperative that they know that you are an international student and that you do not qualify for “work-study” funding. International students will be required to complete the On-Campus Employment Authorization Form. This information is provided as a guide for departments that wish to hire an international student. The process for hiring an international is exactly the same as hiring any other student. The difference is immigration regulations that govern the actual employment that occurs. It is the responsibility of each international student to adhere to the regulations and maintain their immigration status.
Student Employment Office (SEO)
The UTRGV Student Employment Office (SEO) provides assistance to both students and employers in meeting their employment needs. SEO provides free job posting and online application services to the campus and local community. In addition, SEO assists students in completing their employment paperwork and provides satellite payroll services for students.

Additional Information
Extensions for Direct Wage, Professional Temp Staff, and Part-Time Non-Student Employees must be submitted through the HR Portal. Revised end date (to an earlier date) must be submitted through the HR Portal.
Also, must be enrolled Full Time (min. Profiles in Excellence student nominees are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the University and local communities. The process of registering with Handshake takes about 5 minutes.
