UVA Alumni Association Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide

The University of Virginia (UVA) boasts a strong alumni network, and the UVA Alumni Association plays a significant role in supporting students through various scholarship opportunities. These scholarships aim to reduce the financial burden of attending UVA and empower students to succeed. This article provides a detailed overview of several scholarships associated with the UVA Alumni Association, including eligibility requirements, application timelines, and the unique support they offer.

Understanding UVA Scholarships and Financial Aid

Students and parents often seek information regarding scholarship opportunities, both from the University and external sources. It's important to understand how these scholarships interact with the overall financial aid process at UVA. This page contains information on federal, state, and University of Virginia scholarships and grants. Some of them may end up on your financial aid award, if you apply for need-based financial aid. While we cannot list all non-need based scholarships here, we can steer you towards some that we think are worth bringing to your attention: Going Merry, the Big Future search engine at the CollegeBoard, and Tuition Funding Sources.

The Legacy Scholarship

The Legacy Scholarship is specifically designed for graduating high school seniors who are children or dependents of UVA alumni. To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate both academic merit and financial need. This scholarship is designated for full-time enrollment status only. Yes, this scholarship is restricted for use at four-year colleges. It's important to note that scholarship programs typically only accept applications a few months before their annual deadline. Based on previous application cycles, the Legacy Scholarship is expected to reopen in February 2025.

The McIntire First Generation Scholarship

A particularly inspiring example of alumni support is the McIntire First Generation Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 2024 by two first-generation McIntire graduates, Sarrah Abdulali (Com ’24) and Manish Dahal (Com ’24). Their vision is to create a world where underrepresented students have equal opportunities and a supportive community that enables them to become pioneers in their chosen fields.

The Founders' Story

Sarrah and Manish personally experienced the challenges of navigating college and the business world without adequate resources. Driven by their determination to succeed, they excelled both academically and in extracurricular activities. Sarrah's involvement included roles such as a Career Peer Educator for the UVA Career Center, Manager for Cavalier Connect (the only student-led fundraising organization on Grounds), Aetna Insurance Support Fund Director for Student Council, DEI Director for Forge, and a TEDx Speaker.

In their final semester, Sarrah and Manish took the initiative to create UVA’s first community dedicated to supporting and empowering First-Generation and/or Limited Income students interested in business-One Generation Network. Recognizing the potential impact of their vision, they invited Jack Banbury (Com ’78) and his wife Mary Beth, a first-generation graduate, to join their team.

Scholarship Goals and Impact

The McIntire First Generation Scholarship aims to alleviate the financial burden of attending UVA, but its mission extends far beyond monetary assistance. The scholarship is designed to reduce the cost of attending UVA, but more importantly, to provide a community that equips and emboldens students to succeed in business and make a lasting impact on their communities at UVA and beyond. It seeks to create a supportive community that equips and empowers students to thrive in the business world and make a lasting impact on their communities, both at UVA and beyond.

Additional Resources for Scholarship Opportunities

While the UVA Alumni Association offers valuable scholarship opportunities, it's also beneficial to explore external resources for additional funding. UVA recommends exploring resources like Going Merry, the Big Future search engine at the CollegeBoard, and Tuition Funding Sources.
