Navigating the Admissions Process at the University of Virginia
The University of Virginia (UVA) attracts a diverse pool of applicants each year, all seeking a world-class education. Understanding the undergraduate admission requirements is crucial for prospective students. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the application process, deadlines, and criteria for both first-year and transfer students.
Application Options: Tailoring Your Approach
UVA offers several application options designed to accommodate different student needs and timelines. These include Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision. It's important to select the option that best suits your individual circumstances.
Early Decision: A Binding Commitment
Early Decision is a binding plan for students who consider UVA their top choice and are confident in presenting a strong application early in the process. A key aspect of Early Decision is that admitted students are required to withdraw all other applications and enroll at UVA. Decisions for Early Decision applicants are typically released around December 15th, and admitted students must submit their deposits by January 15th.
Early Action: A Non-Binding Advantage
Early Action is a non-binding option that allows students to apply early without committing to attend if admitted. This can be an attractive choice for those who want to receive an admission decision sooner and feel their application is strong without the inclusion of first-semester senior year grades. UVA aims to release Early Action decisions by February 15th, and admitted students have until May 1st to make their enrollment decision.
Regular Decision: A Comprehensive Review
Regular Decision is also a non-binding option, providing students ample time to complete their applications and include their first-semester senior year grades for consideration. Regular Decision applicants can expect to receive their decisions around April 1st.

UVA maintains a consistent review process across all application plans, ensuring that there is no inherent advantage to choosing one over another. The goal is to provide students with multiple options to select the one that best aligns with their needs.
Application Requirements for All Students
The University of Virginia accepts applications from first-year and transfer students through the Common Application. Students are required to submit their portion of the application online. Several key components make up a complete application:
Academic Credentials
- High School Transcript: All applicants to UVA Wise must be a graduate of an approved secondary school OR hold a certificate of high school equivalency (GED). An official high school transcript (or GED certificate, if applicable) is required. In addition to the secondary school report, your counselor should submit the school profile and your transcript(s) online.
- College Transcripts (if applicable): Applicants with prior college coursework must submit official transcripts from all previously attended institutions. While official dual enrollment transcripts are not required for your admission application, if you have any, they are necessary to provide for evaluated credit prior to class registration.
Standardized Testing (Test-Optional for Fall 2026)
UVA is test-optional for those applying for admission for Fall 2026. You'll have the choice of sharing or not sharing results from the SAT and ACT. After the deadline, applicants may submit updated scores through their portal. Admitted students who applied with testing and decide to enroll at UVA must request official score reports for verification. The ETS code is 5820. The ACT code is 4412.
- SAT/ACT Scores: If submitting test scores, UVA considers the best combination of section scores without recalculation (super-scoring). Report your scores (section scores for the SAT or composite and sub-scores for the ACT) as they appear on your official score report.
Recommendations and Evaluations
- Secondary School Report: Your school counselor can submit the secondary school report online. A counselor recommendation can be submitted with the secondary school report.
- Teacher Evaluation: UVA requires one recommendation from a teacher of an academic subject so that they can learn more about your school performance. Your academic teacher recommendation should also be submitted online. If your counselor is unable to write a recommendation letter, please request that the secondary school report still be completed and submitted online. If your counselor is unable to provide a written recommendation, you may submit a recommendation from another school administrator or academic teacher if possible.
Essays and Personal Statements
The essays and written supplements are your opportunity to express what is important to you in your own words. UVA emphasizes the importance of authentic and original essays. While AI tools can be helpful in generating ideas and centering your thoughts, essays and personal statements that rely more on AI than your original thoughts miss the mark in one incredibly important way: they lack your voice, your ideas, and your very personal reflection on how your experiences have shaped you. Generative AI may play a minor role in your final product by helping you brainstorm essay topics or check for grammar mistakes, but we ask that you do not cut and paste any part of your essay or personal statements from an AI tool. All final submitted materials should be your original work. As an applicant to UVA, we ask you to sign an honor statement before submitting the Common Application because the UVA community is anchored by trust and integrity. Our students pledge not to lie, cheat, or steal, and we ask the same of our applicants. By agreeing to this honor statement, you are pledging that the application materials you submit to us are your original work, not primarily a product of AI.
Additional Information
- Application Updates: All application updates should be uploaded via the student portal. Once the "upload" button is clicked for a document, it is automatically added to your file and will be visible to admission staff. UVA is a paperless office, so you should submit your part of the application online and use your applicant portal to submit updates after the deadline.
- Residency: If students wish to be considered legal residents for the purposes of admission and tuition, they must answer the residency questions on our application. If you wish to claim entitlement to Virginia in-state educational privileges pursuant to the Code of Virginia, Section 23-7.4, you must complete the residency section of the application. If supporting documents are requested after an application is submitted, fax them to 434-982-2663.
- Arts Supplements: Students who exhibit exceptional talent in the arts may submit an arts portfolio through the Common Application via Slideroom. This portfolio is an optional part of the application process and is intended for those who plan to engage seriously in the University’s arts departments as students. Completed portfolio evaluations are shared with the admission committee and are considered as part of the overall application review. These portfolios are not required to enroll in arts-related classes at the University of Virginia and will only be used for the admission process.
- What Not to Submit: UVA does not accept resumes, research abstracts, or writing portfolios.

- In-State vs. Out-of-State: UVA has pledged to maintain a 2/3 majority of Virginia residents in our student population.
- Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit: Yes! We generally give credit for scores of 4 or 5 on AP exams and 5, 6, or 7 on Higher Level IB exams.
What Happens After Admission?
Upon learning of any relevant significant changes to a student’s record that would merit review, the Associate Vice Provost of Admission will convene a committee to review the case. The committee will consist of the Associate Vice Provost of Admission and a senior member of the admissions staff. Depending on the nature of the allegations forming the basis for review, the committee could include a representative from the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS), Office of Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights (EOCR), and respective school units, among others. The student shall have an opportunity to provide a written statement to the committee for consideration. The committee can also gather and consider additional relevant information from various sources to include the high school counselor, a teacher, Principal and other relevant individuals. The committee may also request an in-person or virtual meeting between the committee and the student to gather more information.
