Vanderbilt Baseball: A Legacy of Excellence in the Major Leagues

Vanderbilt University's baseball program has long been recognized as a breeding ground for top-tier talent. The program has consistently produced players who have not only excelled at the collegiate level but have also gone on to make significant contributions to Major League Baseball (MLB). This article explores the remarkable presence of Vanderbilt alumni in MLB, highlighting their achievements and the impact of the Commodores' baseball program on the professional stage.

A Prolific Pipeline to the Pros

Vanderbilt has consistently sent a stream of players to the major leagues. In a recent season, Vanderbilt led the nation with 17 alumni on MLB rosters, more than any other program in the country. This remarkable figure underscores the program's ability to develop and prepare players for the highest level of competition. Last year 13 former Commodores played in the big leagues. Of those 13 players, eight were pitchers, including David Price and Walker Buehler, who both pitched in the 2018 World Series.

The Commodores led the nation with 15 former players who made an MLB appearance in 2019 including nine pitchers. Sixteen former Commodore student-athletes across 11 organizations were part of player pools. Eleven former Commodore student-athletes were named to Opening Day rosters across seven organizations.

To show their appreciation for Head Coach Tim Corbin and their confidence in the continued success of the Vanderbilt Baseball program, many of his former players-an impressive 60 percent of them, in fact-as well as a number of other donors, recently contributed to a $12 million fundraising effort to support the construction of new baseball facilities at the university.

Vanderbilt has also seen an influx of former players in MLB coaching jobs. Among the most notable are Cubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty, Phillies pitching coach Caleb Cotham, Orioles third base coach Tony Mansolino and Padres first base coach David Macias.

Notable Alumni in MLB

The list of Vanderbilt alumni who have made their mark in MLB is extensive and impressive. Here are some notable examples:

  • Sonny Gray (2009-11): St. Louis Cardinals
  • Drew VerHagen (2012): St. Louis Cardinals
  • Austin Martin (2018-20): Minnesota Twins.
  • Zander Wiel (2012-15): Minnesota Twins,.
  • Bryan Reynolds (2014-16): Pittsburgh Pirates. Reynolds finished with the highest batting average (.314) for a switch-hitting MLB rookie since 1896.
  • Mike Yastrzemski (2010-13): San Francisco Giants.
  • Tyler Beede, RHP, 2012-14: Cleveland Guardians
  • JJ Bleday, OF, 2017-19: Oakland A's. The most recent Vanderbilt player to make his MLB debut was JJ Bleday, the 2019 SEC Player of the Year who debuted with the Marlins.
  • Walker Buehler, RHP, 2013-15: Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Jason Delay, C, 2014-17: Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Tony Kemp, 2011-13: Baltimore Orioles
  • Collin Snider, 2015-17: Seattle Mariners
  • Dansby Swanson, 2013-15: Chicago Cubs
  • Kyle Wright, 2015-17: Kansas City Royals

The Next Wave of Talent

The Vanderbilt baseball program continues to produce promising prospects who are on the cusp of making their MLB debuts. Jack Leiter, the second overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, is one such player. Leiter, an All-American at Vanderbilt, is currently playing at Triple-A and has the potential to be called up to the Texas Rangers in the near future.

Another player who could debut soon is Austin Martin, who played at Vanderbilt from 2018-20 and was an All-American in 2019. Martin has dealt with injuries in the minors, but the Minnesota Twins added him to their 40-man roster in the offseason, priming him for a call-up. His ability to play multiple positions and steal bases could give him a role on an MLB bench.

Outfielder Spencer Jones impressed in spring training with the New York Yankees. In 13 games, he hit .444 with two doubles, a home run and more walks than strikeouts. With the Yankees' crowded outfield situation, though, he may not get a call-up. The same could be said of Enrique Bradfield Jr., who appeared in six spring training games with the Baltimore Orioles. He does not seem likely to make the majors in 2024, but it's possible if the Orioles want a pinch-running specialist for the playoffs.

One other option for a call-up this season is Javier Vaz. The outfielder appeared in eight games with the Kansas City Royals during spring training and hit .429 after he hit .279 with 30 stolen bases across High-A and Double-A in 2023. Vaz's skillset is perfectly suited for a utility role in the major leagues.
