The Genesis of the Chancellor's Scholarship
Chancellor Joe B. Wyatt initiated Chancellor’s Scholars in 1985. Since its inception, the scholarship has aimed to identify and support students who not only excel academically but also possess exceptional leadership qualities and a dedication to building inclusive communities.
What the Chancellor's Scholarship Offers
Each year, the Chancellor's Scholarship awards full tuition, plus a one-time summer stipend for an immersive experience following the sophomore or junior year. This financial support allows recipients to fully engage in their academic pursuits and explore enriching opportunities. Vanderbilt will provide additional need-based financial aid to those Chancellor's Scholarship recipients whose demonstrated financial need exceeds the amount of full tuition.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Chancellor's Scholars are selected based on a holistic review of their qualifications, with a focus on:

Chancellor’s Scholars have worked to build strong communities in their high schools by leading collaborative efforts among students with varying perspectives, and they have demonstrated significant interest in promoting dialogue within their high school community. Chancellor’s Scholars are expected to build upon these efforts through continued active engagement in collaborative academic and leadership opportunities at Vanderbilt.

The Application Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
To be considered for the Chancellor's Scholarship, prospective students must follow a two-step application process:
- Apply for Admission to Vanderbilt: Students must first apply for admission to Vanderbilt separately by submitting the Common Application, Coalition Application, or the QuestBridge Application. - Apply for the Chancellor's Scholarship via MyAppVU: After submitting the application for admission and gaining access to MyAppVU, applicants can apply for the Chancellor's Scholarship. Under the Scholarship tab in MyAppVU, you will be able to select the signature scholarship(s) to which you wish to apply. Through your MyAppVU portal, you will upload your responses for the scholarship applications as a PDF or Word document and submit online. Once you submit your scholarship application online, you will receive immediate confirmation indicating the date of submission. You will also see a green check mark which indicates the application was submitted successfully. Upload your Scholarship Application(s) via your MyAppVU account in PDF or Word format only. You should receive immediate confirmation that your application was successfully submitted indicating the date of submission. The Chancellor's Scholarship application is strongly encouraged; preference is given to those who apply.
Key Application Considerations
- Recommendation Letter: The Chancellor scholarship requires applicants to submit a recommendation for the scholarship. Your recommendation should be written by someone who can highlight the work you did to promote service and social justice.
- Test-Optional Policy: Currently, Vanderbilt has a test-optional policy that extends to merit scholarships. All applicants who apply for merit-based scholarships by the December 1 deadline will be considered whether or not test scores are submitted. If applicants choose not to submit test scores, more attention will be placed on other academics such as transcript, class ranking, grade consistencies, and teacher recommendations.
- Holistic Review: Vanderbilt employs a holistic review process, taking into account all aspects of an applicant's profile. As you probably know, excellent SAT scores and a stellar GPA are not sufficient to win a Vanderbilt merit scholarship. With an acceptance rate of 7%, half of the admitted students have an SAT score ranging between 1480-1570 and/or an ACT score of 34 or 35; many are valedictorians or in the top 10% of their class. Still, less than 1% of those applicants receive a merit scholarship! Consequently, successful applicants should not only have strong test scores but standout essays and extracurricular activities.

Competition and Selectivity
The Vanderbilt merit scholarships are highly competitive, with just 1% of the freshman class receiving them. Since only about 250 students are awarded merit scholarships, you’ll want to make sure your overall application is as competitive as possible. Awards in one of our three signature programs (Cornelius Vanderbilt, Chancellor’s and Ingram) are being made to fewer than 1% of our applicants for admission. Over 5,400 students applied for the Cornelius Vanderbilt program and over 775 applied for the Chancellor’s Scholarship program.
Distinguishing the Chancellor's Scholarship
The Chancellor scholarship is an award designed for students who demonstrate a commitment to community service. The Chancellor's Scholarship stands alongside other prestigious merit-based scholarships at Vanderbilt, such as the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship and the Ingram Scholarship. Each of the four undergraduate schools awards a number of scholarships proportionate to the school's enrollment.
- Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholars: The Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarship committee will be looking for applicants who have more unique interests.
- Ingram Scholars: Ingram Scholars - students who plan to combine a professional or business career with an exceptional commitment to civic-minded service, innovation, an entrepreneurial spirit, and leadership. The Ingram scholarship is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in business and other professional careers.
