Decision Plans and Application Systems

Vanderbilt offers three decision plans for first-year applicants:

Early Decision I & II: These are binding decision plans for students committed to attending Vanderbilt if admitted. The applicant, a parent or guardian, and the high school counselor must sign the Early Decision Agreement, indicating this commitment. If admitted, the student must immediately withdraw applications to all other colleges and universities.
Regular Decision: This is a non-binding plan that allows students to apply to any number of schools and make their matriculation decision in April, after all admission decisions are known.

Early Decision applicants undergo the same thorough review for need-based financial assistance and merit scholarships as Regular Decision applicants. Applicants can change their Vanderbilt decision plan via the MyAppVU portal up to 2 weeks after the decision plan deadline.

Vanderbilt provides multiple application systems, including the Common Application, Coalition Application, and QuestBridge Application. Applicants should choose the system that is right for them and avoid submitting an application through more than one system.

Signature Merit Scholarships at Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt offers several signature merit scholarships, each with its own specific focus and criteria:

Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship

Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholars receive full tuition, plus a one-time summer stipend for an immersive experience following the sophomore or junior year. Vanderbilt will provide additional need-based financial aid to those Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship recipients whose demonstrated need exceeds the amount of full-tuition. The Cornelius Vanderbilt application is strongly encouraged; preference is given to those who apply.

Selection Criteria: Academic achievement, intellectual promise, and leadership and contribution outside the classroom. The selection committees review the entire application for freshman admissions along with the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship application.

Ingram Scholars Program

The Ingram Scholars Program encourages students to combine a professional career with a commitment to community service. E. Bronson Ingram, chairman of the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust from 1991 until his death in 1995, conceived of the Ingram Scholars Program in 1993 as a way to encourage Vanderbilt students to combine a professional career with a commitment to community service. Ingram's own life exemplified volunteerism and an untiring commitment to mobilizing resources of the business community to assist nonprofit community groups. The Ingram Scholars Program challenges students to create and implement substantial service projects in the community. The program supports students who demonstrate a willingness and ability to combine a successful business or professional career with a lifelong commitment to finding solutions to critical problems facing modern society. Ingram Scholars receive full-tuition, all required fees, and the value of on-campus housing each year plus a stipend for a special summer service project. Vanderbilt will provide additional need-based financial aid to those Ingram Scholarship recipients whose demonstrated financial need exceeds the amount of full tuition. Scholarships are renewable annually through the senior year contingent on the maintenance of a 3.0 minimum GPA and fulfillment of service-related requirements. Throughout their years as an Ingram Scholar, students are required to maintain a twenty-hour monthly service commitment and to complete one summer service project following their sophomore year. Ingram Scholars meet weekly in large and small groups to discuss individual and collective progress, and to reflect on the personal meaning and societal implications of service. The Ingram Scholars Program application is strongly encouraged; preference is given to those who apply. Applicants apply via MyAppVU after submitting admission application. Currently enrolled first year students may apply for 2026-2027 and must submit the electronic Ingram Scholars Program Application which will become available mid-January.

Selection Criteria: Commitment to civic-minded service, an entrepreneurial spirit, strength of personal character, and leadership potential. The selection committee reviews the Ingram Scholars Program application along with the entire application for first-year admission.

Chancellor's Scholarship

The Chancellor scholarship is an award designed for students who demonstrate a commitment to community service.

Application Requirement: The Chancellor scholarship requires applicants to submit a recommendation for the scholarship. Your recommendation should be written by someone who can highlight the work you did to promote service and social justice.

National Merit Scholarship

Vanderbilt provides scholarship assistance for admitted and enrolled students who are named National Merit Finalists. Students must designate Vanderbilt as their first choice school with the National Merit Corporation by National Merit's final deadline and enroll as an entering freshman student to receive Vanderbilt's National Merit Scholarship. For those finalists who also receive one of Vanderbilt's merit scholarships, we guarantee an additional $2,000 in National Merit total scholarship dollars per year from all sources (with Vanderbilt supplementing any smaller corporate or one-time National Merit Corporation awards). Beginning with entering students for the fall 2023 class, those finalists who do not receive an additional merit scholarship from Vanderbilt will receive a total of up to $6,000 per year in National Merit scholarship dollars from all sources (with Vanderbilt supplementing any smaller corporate or one-time National Merit Corporation awards).

Additional Merit-Based Scholarships

Vanderbilt offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships in amounts starting from $8,000 per year. Candidates for these scholarships will be identified by the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships on the basis of academic achievement and fulfillment of any specific scholarships qualifications. Each of the four undergraduate schools awards a number of scholarships proportionate to the school's enrollment.

Key Application Deadlines and Procedures

February 15, 2026 - Priority deadline for submitting completed application for signature scholarships.
February 28, 2026 - Current First-Year Applications are now being accepted until February 28, 2026.
December 1: All applicants who apply for merit-based scholarships by the December 1 deadline will be considered whether or not test scores are submitted.

Application Procedures:

Apply for admission separately by submitting the Common Application, Coalition Application, or the QuestBridge Application to Vanderbilt.
Under the Scholarship tab in MyAppVU, select the signature scholarship(s) to which you wish to apply.
Upload your responses for the scholarship applications as a PDF or Word document through your MyAppVU portal.
Submit the scholarship application online. You should receive immediate confirmation indicating the date of submission and a green check mark indicating successful submission.

The Importance of a Standout Application

As Vanderbilt merit scholarships are highly competitive, applicants should strive to create a standout application. While excellent SAT scores and a stellar GPA are important, they are not sufficient. Vanderbilt currently has a test-optional policy that extends to merit scholarships. If applicants choose not to submit test scores, more attention will be placed on other academics such as transcript, class ranking, grade consistencies, and teacher recommendations.
