Vanderbilt University Pediatrics: Programs and Services
Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Department of Pediatrics stands as a national leader, dedicated to providing exceptional patient care, training future generations of pediatric leaders, and advancing knowledge of conditions affecting infants and children through cutting-edge research. The department ranked first in the nation in fiscal year 2024 in total research grant support provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This article explores the diverse programs and services offered by Vanderbilt Pediatrics, highlighting its commitment to comprehensive care, education, and innovation.
Comprehensive Pediatric Care
Vanderbilt Pediatrics is committed to keeping children well and thriving, both in school and at home. This is achieved through comprehensive medical care from birth through adolescence during regular visits, whether for sickness or well-being. The institution offers same-day access linked to a child’s complete medical record to ensure continuity of care.
Patient-Centered Medical Home
Vanderbilt Children's University Pediatrics is a designated Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH). This team-based care model focuses on improving quality, efficiency, safety, and patient satisfaction. PCMH-certified clinics meet specific criteria set by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), demonstrating their commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care. Vanderbilt strives to provide the highest quality care by using the most up-to-date, evidence-based scientific information and expertise available.
Locations and Outreach
Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt provides primary and subspecialty care at 30 locations across the state of Tennessee. This extensive network demonstrates a commitment to providing excellent patient care closer to home for patients and their families. While outreach initiatives continue to expand, the main campus location sees patients from all over Tennessee and surrounding states, including Kentucky, Alabama, and Mississippi.
Pediatric Residency Program
The residency program at Vanderbilt provides graduate medical training in a comprehensive, tertiary care facility with broad exposure to all subspecialties and experience in primary care. The mission is to provide comprehensive training in pediatrics with the flexibility to meet the educational needs of individual residents, allowing them to become leaders in their chosen areas of interest.

Training and Exposure
Vanderbilt offers broad exposure to pediatrics at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital. Rotations include general pediatric wards, NICU, PCCU, subspecialty services, adolescent medicine, newborn nursery, developmental-behavioral pediatrics, community health and advocacy, acute care clinic, and pediatric ED. A six-month individualized curriculum is tailored to career goals, with elective opportunities available in all subspecialties, procedures, advocacy, community hospital medicine, research, community private practices, and international medicine. Opportunities for clinic experiences in private practice offices around the Nashville area provide additional unique experiences to the training.
Continuity Clinic
Residents have a continuity clinic in the Pediatric Primary Care Clinic where they provide longitudinal care for children with a wide range of acute and chronic medical issues from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Approximately 80 percent of these patients are insured under Medicaid.
Teaching the Next Generation
In clinic visits, patients may encounter pediatric residents, attending physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and health care students. Residents spend three or more years in training at Monroe Carell, in clinics with patients, or learning the latest health care advances from specialists. A child may see only one doctor, or a resident may ask an attending (supervisor) for a second opinion.
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program
Vanderbilt University School of Nursing offers a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Primary Care (PNP-PC) specialty. PNP-PCs deliver care to patients in various settings, including outpatient pediatric clinics, community clinics, health departments, preschools and elementary schools, private practices, community agencies, ambulatory care settings, and specialty clinics.
Curriculum and Training
Through a comprehensive curriculum that uses traditional classroom settings, simulated experiences, and clinical training, students develop deep pediatric primary care knowledge and clinical reasoning skills. The School of Nursing’s full-time clinical placement team partners with students and faculty to create enriching clinical practicums, ensuring each student receives robust training in their specialty. Clinical sites may include outpatient clinics, private pediatric practices, and community clinics. Where possible, clinical placements are made in the student’s preferred geographic area.

Program Structure
MN Prespecialty students complete the program in just 3-4 semesters. This accelerated specialty is best suited for motivated, self-directed learners who can master large amounts of complex material in a short time. Balancing full-time work with the program’s rigorous, full-time, accelerated curriculum is not recommended, although the specialty can be completed on a part-time basis.
Addressing Critical Needs
Millions of children deal with diabetes, obesity, asthma, autism, depression, mental health issues, and more. As a PNP-PC, graduates are well-positioned to provide care to these children and their families.
Pediatric Psychosocial Care
Vanderbilt Pediatrics recognizes the importance of addressing the mental, emotional, and behavioral well-being of young patients. Around 20 percent of youth in the United States experience a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder between the ages of 3 and 17. The dynamic nature of the pediatric psychosocial care field requires constant innovation to effectively meet the changing needs of young patients and their families.
Comprehensive Approach
In pediatrics, a comprehensive approach to psychosocial care is essential. Integrating trauma-informed care with patient-and-family-centered care highlights a shift toward prioritizing patient and family perspectives in healthcare and school experiences. A critical aspect of current pediatric care practices involves addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their impact on children’s well-being. ACEs can result in toxic trauma that affects children’s physical health and psychosocial and behavioral development.
Early Intervention and Prevention
The evolving pediatric care landscape shows a shift toward tailored, patient-centered care models that consider the unique needs of each child and family. Another emerging trend in strengthening youth mental wellness is the growing emphasis on early intervention and preventative care. An example of early intervention and preventative care is seen in the way school counselors support youth. These professionals support youth’s emotional well-being and positive development, addressing psychosocial issues before they escalate.

Innovative Therapeutic Approaches
In the realm of pediatric psychosocial care, the integration of innovative therapeutic approaches designed to cater uniquely to children’s mental and emotional well-being is becoming more common. Animal-assisted therapy incorporates animals that meet specific criteria, such as horses, dogs, cats, and birds, into treatment.
Educational Opportunities
Peabody College offers various programs and certificates related to pediatric psychosocial care. For those interested in a child life specialist certification, ACLP-required coursework may be completed in the program along with the completion of a 100-hour hospital-based child life practicum program in the Nashville community. Students enrolled in the M.Ed. in Human Development Counseling: School Counseling Track and the M.Ed. in Child Studies: Applied Professional Track can also obtain the Certificate in Pediatric Psychosocial Care. This certificate supplements enrollment in a master's or doctoral degree program at Vanderbilt University.
