Previously, individual schools operated smaller programs, but the division sought to assess the concept university-wide.

To be eligible for the VCU Internship Funding Program, students must meet specific criteria and navigate a structured application process. Key aspects of eligibility include:
- Continuing Student Status: Applicants must be continuing students in good standing at VCU.
- Internship Status: Students should be applying for a specific internship program and have received an interview offer or an employment offer for a summer internship.
- Off-Campus, Unpaid Internship: The internship must be an off-campus, unpaid experience occurring during the summer. The program supports opportunities in Virginia that may not cover all expenses.
- Financial Need: The program prioritizes students who demonstrate financial need beyond their financial aid status. The essay questions in the application target a student’s financial need beyond financial aid status. According to the data, 41% were first-generation students, and 47% of those awarded grants were Pell Grant eligible.
The application process involves several key steps:
- General Application: Complete the General Application first.
- VCU Internship Funding Program Application: Under Opportunities, select All from the dropdown menu and search for the VCU Internship Funding Program application.
- Essay Questions: Applicants must respond to essay questions that address their reasons for requesting funding, planned expenses during the internship, and the internship's relevance to their career goals.
- Verification: Upload/Attach a form of verification that you were a) offered you an interview for Summer 2026 internship OR b) extended an offer of employment for the Summer 2026 internship. The verification must include the date, time and that employer named in your application.
- Budget Worksheet: Complete the provided Google Sheet to detail planned expenses.
- Blind Review: Applications undergo a blind review process, where faculty members and staff evaluate the information provided and assess how the funding could contribute to the student's career or academic goals.
Funding Details and Permitted Expenses
The VCU Internship Funding Program offers grants up to $5,000 to cover specific expenses associated with the internship. However, the actual award amount may vary based on individual needs and circumstances. Reynolds said students had different needs and asked for different levels of funding. Awards have ranged from $600 to $5,000, based on specific requests and situations.

- Initial travel to and return from the internship site
- Housing (excluding hotels and short-term housing)
- Professional attire
- Supplies
It is important to note that funding may not be used for:
- Tuition or course-related fees
- Program fees for an internship placement service
- Pet care
- Medical expenses for self or family
- Hotels/vacation rentals
- Purchasing or renting transportation
- Recurring/current payments such as local/current rent and utilities (except for noted Lost Wages on your budget worksheet)
- Car payments
- Insurance
- Credit cards
Internship Requirements
To qualify for funding, the internship must meet specific requirements:
- Summer Semester: The internship must occur during the summer semester.
- Duration: The internship must last at least four weeks.
- Hours per Week: Students must engage in at least 10 hours per week at the internship site.
- Structured Experience: Internships are supervised, structured work experiences that are time-limited and involve your direct contribution(s) to the organization, ideally through projects or other tangible artifacts.
Student Responsibilities and Agreement
Students who receive funding through the VCU Internship Funding Program must agree to certain conditions:
- Enrollment: They must enroll in an undergraduate degree program OR one of the 5 year Master’s programs at VCU for at least one semester following the internship experience.
- Completion: They must complete the internship experience for which they applied to receive funding. If they are unable to do so, they must communicate this information to the program's administrator to determine next steps, including potential repayment options.
- Participation in Events: VCU may invite and encourage them to participate in VCU-hosted recognition events for awardees and donors.
Applicants must also acknowledge that any information disclosed during the application process is subject to mandatory reporting under Title IX and the Honor System and Standards of Academic Conduct.

Impact and Outcomes
The VCU Internship Funding Program has a significant impact on students' lives and career trajectories. By removing financial barriers, the program enables students to gain valuable experiential learning opportunities that enhance their skills, knowledge, and professional networks.
Reynolds said she is excited to talk to the students and the employers after the internships are over. Her team wants to understand what the students learned and what experiences they garnered from the internships. “I think it is undersold in how valuable an internship can be in career exploration and even deciding what is not for you,” Reynolds said.
The program's success is evident in the strong demand for funding. The division had hoped for at least 100 applicants, but it received a total of 147 applications. A wide array of students participated in the program.
Reynolds said, “There is definitely a correlation between having done an internship and getting a full-time job after graduation. It can be at the organization a student interned at or another."
Application Timeline
The Internship Support Grant Application will open on January 22, 2026. Reviews begin on March 5 and are rolling. Applications opened in January and closed in March. Students had to have applied for an internship, though some had already been extended offers at the point of seeking funding.
