Vermont Adult Learning (VAL) stands as the largest adult education provider in the state, having served tens of thousands of adult learners since its founding in 1980. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, VAL's mission is to create an innovative, inclusive, and equitable learning environment that provides personalized opportunities for education and career development for Vermont residents. Comprehensive Services Offered by VAL

VAL offers a wide range of no-cost services tailored to meet the diverse needs of adult learners, sixteen years and older, whose educational needs have not been successfully met by traditional schooling. These services include:

Celebrating 45 Years of Impact

Vermont Adult Learning is celebrating its 45th anniversary, marking four decades of growth, adaptation, and student success. From its humble beginnings in a converted chicken coop in East Calais to learning centers in seven counties, an Online Learning Center, and workforce development programming, VAL has consistently evolved to meet the changing needs of Vermont's adult learners.

VAL partners with students to help them gain the assets that lead to success. Their programs are individualized and student-centered, with goals related to life and family, career, and further education.

Career and Further Education: Support includes high school diploma and GED programs, job readiness skills, free certifications, computer/digital literacy and certification, college/trade school preparation, and preparation for college or pre-professional placement exams.

Burlington Technical Center: Skills for a Digital World and Beyond

Burlington Technical Center (BTC) offers a variety of programs designed to help adult learners build practical skills for the workforce and pursue their passions. These programs include digital literacy training, career certification programs, and specialized training in fields such as aviation.

Digital Literacy Series

In partnership with Technology for Tomorrow, Burlington Technical Center is offering a 5-class Digital Literacy Series designed to help adult learners build practical workforce technology skills. Topics include Google tools, budgeting, artificial intelligence, online safety, and job searching in today’s digital world. Classes are held in person and are open to adults seeking career-ready skills. Each class is offered individually so you can target the skills you need to develop. With options for instructor-led or self-paced learning, there’s something for everyone.

Career Certification Programs

For those ready to take their careers to the next level, Career Certification programs prepare you for high-demand roles in industries like healthcare, technology, and trades. Complete these programs at your own pace, typically in 3 to 12 months, with the option for instructor support. Financial assistance may be available through VSAC’s Advancement Grant.

Aviation and Aerospace Technology Program

For those with a passion for hands-on work and problem-solving, BTC offers an immersive, two-year Aviation and Aerospace Technology program. This program meets the growing demand for skilled aircraft mechanics. Through a comprehensive curriculum and real-world training in state-of-the-art facilities, you’ll gain the expertise needed to troubleshoot, inspect, and maintain a variety of aircraft. The curriculum blends technical knowledge with practical expertise. Classes run full-time (8 hours a day, 5 days a week), offering an unparalleled deep-dive into aviation mechanics.

Daytime Programs

Adult students can enroll in Burlington Technical Center’s full-time offerings, depending on availability. BTC is always expanding its course catalog, and welcomes course ideas and potential instructors.

GED Testing in Vermont

The General Education Development (GED) tests provide individuals who did not finish high school with an opportunity to earn a secondary school equivalency certificate. Employers, the military, colleges and technical educators and institutions recognize and accept the GED.

GED Test Structure and Requirements

The GED tests include four exams that cover the following subjects:

Reasoning Through Language Arts
Mathematical Reasoning
Science
Social Studies

Each of the four subject tests must be passed in order to obtain the GED. Testers can choose when to take each test, and do not have to take all subject tests on the same day.

GED Testing Policies and Procedures

Residency Requirement: Only Vermont residents may choose Vermont as their jurisdiction through the GED Testing Service for online and in-person testing.
Age Requirement: In Vermont, young adults 16 or 17 years of age must have parental permission to take the GED tests.
Registration: Students register online for the GED test on a computer, using the MyGED portal.
Retesting: You may re-test a subject area up to three times with no wait time between re-tests. After the third attempt each must be preceded by a 60-day waiting period.
Language Options: You may take the GED tests in Spanish, as well as English. In Vermont, you are allowed to combine different language versions of the GED test.

GED Ready: The Official Practice Test

Students are encouraged to take GED Ready: The Official Practice Test, which is offered at adult education and literacy centers throughout Vermont. The results can be used to assess readiness to test and/or need for further study and tutoring assistance.

Adult Education and Literacy Week: Celebrated annually to raise awareness about the importance of adult education and literacy programs.
Regional Career and Technical Centers: Adults can take job/technical training courses at 17 regional career and technical centers, with examples including Computer and Office Technology, Culinary Arts, Health Sciences, and Manufacturing.
WorkKeys Certification: VAL also offers WorkKeys certification, a nationally recognized career readiness certificate based on ?real world? skills that employers look for in employees.
Volunteer Opportunities: The Burlington Learning Center is seeking volunteer tutors to provide one-on-one support for learners 16 years and older.
