A History of Virginia Commonwealth University Baseball
VCU Rams baseball proudly represents Virginia Commonwealth University in all NCAA Division I baseball competitions. Since its establishment in 1971, the program has been a respected member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Over the years, the Rams have forged a noteworthy record, standing at 867-792-5, including a 155-81 record in-conference (CAA). Currently, Sean Thompson holds the position of head coach, guiding the team's on-field performance and strategic development.
Early Years and Breakthrough Seasons
VCU's baseball program experienced its share of challenges in its formative years. In 1987, the team achieved a significant milestone by posting a 25-22 record, marking its first winning season in school history. This victory served as a foundation for future success and growth.
The 2015 Banner Season
The 2015 season stands out as a landmark year in the history of VCU Rams baseball. In the program's 45th year, led by Shawn Stiffler in his third season as head coach, the team experienced unprecedented success. Despite a 26-22 record and diminishing playoff hopes as they approached their last two conference weekends, the Rams demonstrated remarkable resilience. The team went on an impressive 13-game winning streak, which included a triumphant run through the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament held at George Washington University. The tournament's final play, a diving catch by sophomore outfielder Logan Farrar, was so spectacular it was recognized as one of the Top 10 plays.
NCAA Tournament and Super Regional Appearance
The Rams' victory in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament propelled them into the NCAA Tournament, where they faced tough competition in a regional hosted by Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, Texas. The regional included formidable opponents such as VCU, Texas, and Oregon State. Despite the challenges, the Rams showcased their talent and determination, going 3-1 in the regional tournament. They secured three victories against Dallas Baptist, outscoring them 12-4, and also defeated Oregon State with a score of 5-1.
Advancing to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time in school history, the Rams faced the daunting task of playing against the #5 overall seed in the tournament, Miami, in Coral Gables, FL. The team's Cinderella run came to an end after two hard-fought losses to Miami, with scores of 2-3 in game one and 3-10 in game two.

Notable Achievements and Records
VCU's baseball program has achieved distinction in the NCAA Division I baseball tournament, which began in 1947. VCU is one of only two CAA Tournament teams to have produced a 1-hitter during the tournament, the other being Maika Symmonds of ODU, vs. Richmond, 5-20-95. Ram pitcher, Matt Prendergast, accomplished this feat against George Mason on May 25, 2003. VCU and GMU also share the record for most RBI in a tournament with 11 by Brandon Inge, VCU, 1997 (4 games) and 11 by Jeff Palumbo, GMU, 2003 (5 games).
MLB Draft Selections
VCU has consistently produced talented players who have been selected in the MLB Draft, with some going on to have successful careers in Major League Baseball. In the 2006 MLB Draft, 28 CAA players were selected, including 3 from VCU - Harold Mozingo (RHP, KC, overall pick #167), Scott Sizemore (2B, DET, overall pick #142), and Michael Gibbs (RHP, COL, overall pick #498).
