The Visual Arts Building at UCF: A Hub for Creativity and Innovation

The Visual Arts Building (VAB) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) stands as a cornerstone for artistic exploration and education. Located on the northern part of campus, near the Nicholson School of Communication Building, the VAB is home to the School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD), a vital part of the College of Arts & Humanities.

Construction and Opening

The initial construction of the Visual Arts Building began in 1990. The grand opening took place in January of 1992. The total cost of the building was $8.6 million, $1.1 million more than originally planned. However, despite the official opening in 1992, the classrooms were not fully completed for several months, leaving students and teachers without essential amenities like blackboards, electrical outlets, and plumbing.

Building Features and Design

With two floors and 68,921 square feet of available space, the VAB provides ample room for various artistic activities. It houses art studios, classrooms, and large lecture halls. The building also features wall space to display artwork, fostering a creative and inspiring environment.

The UCF Art Gallery, located within the Visual Arts Building, serves as a catalyst for visual art experiences and education, culture, and community engagement. The UCF Art Gallery hosts occasional Call for Proposals for Solo and/or Group Exhibitions.

Tours are conducted by faculty, staff, alumni, and student ambassadors who are enrolled in an SVAD program. Prospective students and their families are encouraged to attend “open to the public” events that occur throughout the semester for a chance to speak with faculty, current students, and to see the facilities.
