Volcano Bay: A Comprehensive Review of Universal's Water Theme Park
Universal Orlando Resort's Volcano Bay aims to redefine the water park experience, immersing guests in a South Pacific-themed paradise. With its state-of-the-art TapuTapu wearable technology, thrilling water slides, and a focus on immersive storytelling, Volcano Bay has garnered significant attention. However, like any ambitious project, it has faced its share of challenges and criticisms. This review delves into various aspects of Volcano Bay, considering both the positive experiences and the areas that may need improvement.
First Impressions and Theming
Volcano Bay distinguishes itself through its elaborate theming, centered around the fictional Waturi tribe and their quest for the perfect island home. The centerpiece of the park, the 200-foot Krakatau volcano, dominates the landscape. The story of Volcano Bay starts with the culture of the Waturi, a fictional tribe from the South Pacific, searching for their perfect home, led by their hearts and yearning for adventure. The immersive environment extends to the staff, who often greet guests with "Kia Ora," a Maori expression meaning "be well" or "be happy."
The TapuTapu Experience
A key innovation at Volcano Bay is the TapuTapu wearable, designed to streamline the guest experience. This waterproof wristband serves multiple functions:
- Virtual Queuing: TapuTapu allows guests to virtually wait in line for rides. You tap your Tapu Tapu at the ride you want to go on; if you’re with a group, everyone will need to tap in. That tap “saves” your spot in line and gives you an estimate of the wait time until it’s your turn. Once you’ve saved your spot, head off to enjoy something else. When it’s your turn, you won’t get on the ride immediately. Instead, it means that it’s almost your turn to get on, meaning that you need to queue up for a 10-15 minute wait. It’s a great time saver and stress reducer as opposed to waiting in line for over an hour. Also, don’t worry if you haven’t finished your cold beverage when the alert goes off.
- Contactless Payments: The TapuTapu wearable allows you to charge purchases - food, souvenirs, drinks, etc.
- Locker Access: The Tapu Tapu wearables give you access to lockers located in bays around the park. They come in several sizes (use fee is based on size), and you’ll want one to stash a change of clothes, camera, phone, and miscellaneous personal items. Don’t cheap out here and leave your personal items unattended, or worse, ask someone in your group to forego the fun of the park and stand watch over the personal items.
While the TapuTapu system aims to enhance convenience, some users have reported issues, including glitches and long virtual wait times. The major annoyance comes when something closes for temporary repairs and you either abandon that virtual line or wait for it to come back up. If you abandon and come back you might have another 120+ min virtual line again before riding. But the virtual line adjusts accordingly if people leave the park or abandon your ride time gets pushed up. The staff at Krakatau urged people to ride that early in their day because its something new that will probably go down a lot. However, others praise the TapuTapu for its real-time updates and its ability to free guests from physical lines, allowing them to enjoy other park amenities. I love that it constantly is giving you real time updates about the park.. when my first ride went off I was more impressed that it let me know this than annoyed that I couldnt ride it haha.
Thrilling Attractions and Ride Experiences
Volcano Bay boasts a diverse array of water slides and attractions, catering to thrill-seekers and those seeking more relaxed experiences.

- Krakatau Aqua Coaster: This signature ride combines the elements of a water slide and a roller coaster, propelling riders uphill and downhill through the volcano. Krakatau is an amazing water coaster. I actually enjoyed all the up hill stuff as much as the drops which is quite a thing to experience. So much my favorite that I rode it multiple times, back-to-back. NOTE: The Krakatau Aqua Coaster does not count as one of your veritable line spots, so you can swipe in here and at another ride. Krakatau broke down mid day so if youre interested in that you should check it out early. I spent 120 min in a virtual line for krakatau which then broke down for 2-3 hours mid day. You would need to abandon that line to get in another virtual line which delivers a problem because say you already waited 110 minutes and it was ten minutes out from your ride and then the ride breaks down for 2+3 hours.
- Ko’okiri Body Plunge: Located atop the Krakatau volcano, this is the world’s tallest body slide. The Ko’okiri Body Plunge starts with standing in a booth-like tube with a trap door beneath you. As you wait to drop, you get a view of the entirety of Universal Orlando Resort and listen to the sound of drumbeats getting louder and faster. It heightens the experience. And anxiety. When the trap door finally opens you plummet through a clear tube sending you straight to the pools below.
- Kala and Tai Nui Serpentine Body Slides: These two intertwining body slides offer a thrilling descent from the volcano's peak. And Kala anda Tai Nui the 2 drop pods at the top of the volcano were my favorite slides of the day. Very fast and thrilling. Tai Nui is probably my favorite. A stair case for the body plunge was still under construction causing the line for kala and tai nui to get insanely crowded. The tapu kiosk for that ride wasnt working so everyone had "ride now" on their tapu all day for those rides and everyone caught on you could get away with multiple re-rides.
- Ika Moana and Honu: These raft slides accommodate groups of four to six people, sending them twisting and turning through winding courses. Other favorites were the Ika Moana and Honu slides. These are rafts slides that hold four to six people per raft. You twist and turn, slide up on the sides, and eventually empty into a pool of water and the bottom.
- TeAwa The Fearless River: Now that the lazy river is running, the Fearless River is back to being what it was intended to be, a more adventurous river experience.
- Kopiko Wai Winding River: I’m a sucker for a lazy river. The Kopiko Wai Winding River wasn’t operational when I visited (it is now).
- Wave Pool: Only really started waiting for most towards the end - there was a period of 90 min where we waited for a slide so we went into the wave pool.
Dining and Refreshments
Volcano Bay offers a diverse culinary landscape with tropical-themed dishes. Sure, you’ve got the necessary kid standbys of burgers and dogs, but you have also delicious tropical themed dishes likes coconut fried chicken, poke bowls, pulled pork sliders, chipotle shrimp tacos, chicken mole tacos (the taco sampler was one of my favorites), specialty pizzas, sushi, and more. They’ve got you covered for dessert with specialty ice creams and ices. In addition to the expected soft drinks and coffee and tea (hot and iced), there is also a yummy selection of adult beverages, most of which can also be ordered as a non-alcoholic option. The signature drink is the Vol’s Fire Punch made from rum, pineapple juice, agave, grenadine, and Sprite. It was delicious, but I didn’t find it thirst quenching. Volcano Bay offers a signature beer, Volcano Blossom, a pilsner brewed exclusively for the park. Tasting notes: A smooth honeyed floral flavor with notes of star fruit and passion fruit. Most of my friends loved it. I didn’t.
Cabanas and Premium Seating
For guests seeking a more luxurious experience, Volcano Bay offers cabana rentals. Cabanas range in sizes that will accommodate 6-16 people and start around $160-200. It’s a spacious area to call your own for the day. It includes padded lounge chairs, a small refrigerator stocked with water, towels, locker, a complimentary snack and fruit based, and an exclusive food and drink menu with butler service. With three or more people, this is a great option. If there’s only two of you, you can opt for premium seating starting at $30. With premium seating, you get two deluxe loungers with an adjustable canopy shade and built-in locker.
Addressing Criticisms and Challenges
Volcano Bay has faced criticism regarding operational issues, particularly during its initial opening period. Complaints run from slides breaking down to virtual lines in excess of four hours, from glitchy Tapu Tapu wearables to the park reaching capacity and not being able to get in at all.
Some reviewers have pointed out unfinished landscaping and construction, suggesting that the park opened prematurely. Most of the park remains unfinished for grounds work. There are still lots of patches of dirt and there was still a crane underneath the volcano. Some sections of the park sectioned off because they werent finished. Escalator not working. Tapu Tapu only working on a couple things. No lazy river. Landscaping not even close to done. There wasn't an area there wasn't a worker- every time someone turned a corner there were another 2-3 workers on something. It should go without saying they opened too early.
Another point of contention revolves around the perception of bias in media reviews. Evey media event will pamper the media. Then she point out everything that is not finished in broad strokes comparing it to Disney. That is also unprofessional because you should judge it for what it's meant to be . Then there is the thing you should know about the last few resorts and rides Universal opened. They aren't done.

Tips for Maximizing Your Visit
To make the most of a trip to Volcano Bay, consider the following tips:

- Consider Cabana or Premium Seating: If you’re looking for a comfortable and convenient home base, cabanas or premium seating can enhance your experience.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to combat the Florida heat.
- Check Ride Status: Be aware that rides may temporarily close for repairs, so monitor the TapuTapu for updates.
