VTech Grow and Learn Farm: An In-Depth Review
Before diving into this review, it's important to note the initial hesitation my wife and I had regarding the VTech Grow and Learn Farm. We proceeded with caution, understanding potential issues and how to ensure our child's safety.
First Impressions and the Allure of Electronic Toys
Originally, I envisioned a simple, solid wood toy, perhaps crafted in an Amish community, to aid my son, Chaim Yosef, in developing his walking skills. However, a department store sale featuring half-off deals on children's toys led us to explore electronic options, ultimately choosing the VTech Grow and Learn Farm.
Multi-Functional Design
The VTech Grow and Learn Farm is essentially multiple devices rolled into one. While Chaim Yosef primarily uses it as a walker, propelling himself across the room, he hasn't quite grasped the concept of obstacles hindering its movement.
The interactive farm set includes a farmer, four farm animals, a tractor, and more, encouraging imaginative play. The set allows children to set up the barn, stable, silo, and fences, while driving the tractor and cart to pick up wood and hay.
Interactive Elements
The front panel boasts a variety of toys and games. There are three light-up learning buttons introduce daily routines and time of day as they encourage nurture and care. Place the interactive cow, donkey, chicken and cat on either of two Talking Points to hear playful responses and fun facts about animals. There is a telephone receiver which is oddly out of place in the twenty first century - it looks like an old corded telephone but Chaim is growing up in a home with two mobile phones and no landlines. Then there is a musical keyboard, along with three spinning wheels.

Developmental Benefits
Elizabeth tells me that in the month that he has had the walker, it has helped him in a number of ways. Before, he would never even try standing alone.
A Parent's Perspective on the "Learning" Aspect
My wife and I do get tired of the numerous melodies that come from the walker. One of the songs that is particularly bothersome has odd lyrics. The song lyrics are, “Welcome to our learning farm / We have much to show you / Shapes and colors, music too / There’s so much to do-oo!” Do-oo?
Overall, I am not sure that the learning part of the walker is even necessary as there are many toys out there that also do a good job of helping with colors and identifying fruits and animals - not to mention good old fashioned flash cards and picture books.
