A History of Wagner College Baseball

The Wagner Seahawks baseball team represents Wagner College in Staten Island, New York, as a varsity intercollegiate athletic team. Since 1987, the team has been a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC), competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I. The Seahawks are currently coached by Craig Noto.

Early Years and Division I Transition

Wagner College's baseball program began in 1945. From 1956 to 1980, the program experienced limited success, achieving only four winning seasons.

In the fall of 1980, Wagner Athletic Director PJ Carlesimo hired Staten Island Hall of Famer Larry Anderson to lead the program. In 1976, Wagner moved to Division I, joining the ECAC, and played its home games on campus at Bill Willets field. Playing a full D-I schedule, the team finished 15-10 in the fall of 1980 and 18-12 in the 1981 spring regular season.

Landmark 1981 Season

The 1981 season marked a significant milestone for Wagner baseball. The Seahawks were awarded the school's first NCAA playoff berth, earning an At-Large NCAA D-I District II post-season berth (equivalent to today's NCAA Regional round) hosted by St. John's University.

In the double-elimination District tournament, Wagner faced tough competition. They lost their opening game to NCAA #4 ranked St. John's 7-1. However, they bounced back with victories over Long Island University (23-11) 4-2 and Seton Hall University (33-11) 5-2. The Seahawks were eventually eliminated in the District Final by St. John's 4-2. St. John's, boasting a 34-4 record, was led by future MLB pitchers Frank Viola and John Franco.

Wagner concluded the 1981 campaign with a school-record 20 wins, finishing 20-14 overall. Three of their losses came against St. John's. Key players during this season included pitchers Frank Rizzuto (3-0), Curt Banos (3-1), and James Murphy, who recorded 8 of the team's 20 wins.

Northeast Conference Era

Since joining the Northeast Conference in 1987, Wagner has achieved some success. The Seahawks have won one Northeast Conference baseball tournament and one Northeast Conference regular season championship, in 2000 and 2009 respectively.

Ballpark Transitions

From 2008 to 2020, the team played its home games at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, New York. However, the Staten Island Yankees folded in 2020, and the ballpark temporarily closed, leaving the Seahawks without a home stadium.

During the 2020 season, which was later suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Seahawks played as a road team. In 2021, they played the majority of their home games at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, New Jersey. Later, the team moved to SIUH Community Park.
