Water Mission Internships: Transforming Lives Through Safe Water and the Gospel

Water Mission, a Christian organization dedicated to providing safe and Living Water, hosts internships each summer. These internships offer young professionals the opportunity to contribute to the ministry’s mission of transforming lives. Interns are involved in various departments, utilizing their skills to help save lives and transform communities with safe water and the gospel.

A Summer of Growth and Impact

Each summer, Water Mission hosts seven to 12 interns who become part of the ministry’s work to transform lives through safe and Living Water. This year, nine young professionals joined the team. Over the summer, they have been furthering their faith and utilizing their skills to help save lives and transform communities with safe water and the gospel. These interns are involved in six departments, including: Disaster Response; Marketing and Communications; Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL); Living Water; Supply Chain Management; and Program Design and Standards.

To celebrate National Intern Day on July 25, a few of our summer interns shared their experience with Water Mission through a Q&A session. Morgan Norris, Disaster Response intern; Erin Lynes, Living Water intern; and Allie Bones, MEL intern, shared what they have learned so far during their time at Water Mission.

Skill Development and Professional Growth

Water Mission internships provide a platform for interns to enhance their skills and gain valuable professional experience. Interns have the opportunity to develop technical skills, improve communication abilities, and cultivate a sense of independence.

Morgan: I think the biggest skill I have grown in has been communication. So much of my interactions with the rest of the Disaster Response team are online, which is not something I have ever really experienced before.

Erin: In this internship, I have been challenged with improving Water Mission’s current Church and Community Mobilization Program modules where I’ve added new cultural explanations, proverbs, and examples. I have also grown in my ability to develop content catered to desired training outcomes and have increased my biblical understanding within the scope of evangelism and gospel-sharing.

Allie: I have grown a lot in my technical skills. This internship has allowed me to learn different data collection, analysis, and visualization programs but has also given me a sense of independence over my projects and assignments which has been so impactful in my professional development.

A Unique Internship Experience

The Water Mission internship stands out due to its emphasis on mentorship, professional development, and a strong sense of community. Interns feel like valued members of the team, receiving guidance and support from mentors. The integration of faith into the workplace, with prayer at the beginning and end of activities, also distinguishes this internship.

Morgan: The people and culture. At other internships, everyone around me has been very nice, but at Water Mission, there has been a level of intentionality I haven’t seen from others. Also, having prayer at the beginning and end of everything has allowed me to keep a strong focus on the Lord throughout my day.

Erin: Water Mission truly feels like family. In the time I have been blessed to serve alongside Water Mission, I have developed great mentors. Many of Water Mission’s interns work remotely, allowing them to be involved in the ministry from all over the country.

Allie: This internship has been different than other internships because of the mentorship and professional development component. I'm not only completing tasks and working on projects; I'm a member of the team and I can tell that the MEL team cares for my professional development. As I reflect on the summer, I can witness my growth through one-on-ones, team meetings, and the intern cohort meetings.

Preparing for the Future

The skills and experiences gained during a Water Mission internship prepare interns for their future careers. Interns develop a strong work ethic, learn to integrate faith into their professional lives, and gain clarity about their career paths.

Morgan: I have learned a lot this summer about how to work with the Lord at the center of it all. Wherever I end up in my future career, I will be able to carry that with me.

Erin: Interning for the Living Water department at Water Mission has provided great clarity for the path the Lord is leading me down.

Allie: This internship has definitely prepared me for my future career because it has revealed to me that I really enjoy MEL and data science.
