Undergraduate Admission

First-Year Applicants

To begin your journey at Wayne State University as a first-year undergraduate student, follow these steps:

Complete the Undergraduate Admission Application: If you are reapplying for admission and have applied within the last year, you are only required to submit the Undergraduate Admission application.
Choose a Major: Select a major from the hundreds of degree programs available at Wayne State.
Consider the Test-Optional Pathway: If you haven't taken the SAT or ACT, or don't want your scores considered, you can pursue the test-optional pathway for fall 2026. This will not impact your eligibility for merit scholarships. To utilize this option, you'll need to:

- Submit a complete list of leadership activities, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and work experience.
- An academic reference recommendation form is optional.
Common App materials, including the activities section, letters of recommendation, and the essay, may satisfy the test-optional requirements. Students completing the Common App should check their WSU-specific application status portal for a list of outstanding requirements.
Audition or Interview (if applicable): If you want to major in music, theatre, or dance you'll also need to schedule an audition or interview through the department.

Transfer Applicants

Transfer students may submit the NACAC Transfer Fee Waiver and must have attestation from a financial aid officer or staff member from their current or most recently attended college/university.

Fee Waivers

The WSU Office of Undergraduate Admissions accepts fee waivers for the application fee for first-year and transfer students. The applying student’s high school guidance counselor must sign the university fee waiver prior to application submission at WSU. ACT or SAT verification that a fee waiver was used to register for the test.

The admissions office reviews your application holistically, considering your academic performance, extracurricular activities, home responsibilities, work commitments, and social engagements.

General Requirements

Holistic Admission Process

The Wayne State University School of Medicine evaluates candidates through a holistic admission process. In addition to fulfilling all admission requirements, your record, including grade-point average, Medical College Admission Test scores, personal statement, experiences, recommendations and interview results, will be considered. Early Decision Program (EDP)

Effective April 20, 2023, the EDP requires a minimum MCAT total score at or above 508. A biology, chemistry, physics, and math (BCPM) and cumulative grade point average of 3.60, as calculated by AMCAS, is also required. For the AMCAS Application Cycle the Early Decision Program deadline is Aug. 1 (application and official transcripts), secondary materials deadline is Aug. 8, and notification of decisions occurs no later than Oct.

College of Nursing Graduate Programs Admission

Beginning Fall 2024, applicants who are interested in receiving a graduate degree in Nursing from Michigan’s premier research institution, please apply through the AACN-operated universal application system NursingCAS. Applicants are not required to submit a separate WSU application. For Winter 2024 MSN and Graduate Certificate programs, please use the graduate school domestic and international links below.

Step 1: Ensure You Meet General Admission Requirements

You must have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from an officially recognized institution outside the United States to apply for graduate admission. If you are applying to a master's program, your minimum undergraduate GPA must be 2.75 or its equivalent in upper division coursework. If you are applying to a doctoral program, your minimum undergraduate GPA must be 3.0 or its equivalent in upper division coursework.

Step 2: Complete a Graduate Admissions Application

Start your application All materials submitted during the application process become the property of the university and will not be returned. Submit your transcript(s) To begin the application review, upload unofficial copies of academic transcripts from all post-secondary educational institutions from which you earned a bachelor's degree or higher. If you are admitted, you must submit an official transcript of your completed bachelor's degree. Demonstrate English proficiency The Graduate School's English Language Proficiency requirements are the absolute minimum; programs can set higher minimum standards. You are expected to learn and meet the requirements set by your program of interest.

Step 3: Submit Any Additional Materials

Check with your program of interest whether they require additional materials. These can include a statement of purpose and letters of recommendation, a writing sample, portfolio, vita or biographical sketch or resume, etc. Test scores Your program may require you to have official test scores (such as GRE, GMAT, etc.) sent directly to WSU. Test scores must be received directly from the agency administering the test. To expedite the processing and review of your application, you may upload an unofficial (copy) report, while waiting for the official to be received and processed. If needed, the Wayne State University school code is 1898. Even though you have submitted the application online, your application may be considered incomplete by the program if additional materials have not been submitted.
