WCC Foundation Scholarship Eligibility Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide

The Westchester Community College (WCC) Foundation, fueled by generous donations, dedicates nearly $3 million annually to support students through scholarships. These scholarships are designed to alleviate the financial burden of higher education, typically covering tuition, fees, and other college-related expenses. This article will provide a comprehensive overview of the eligibility requirements for WCC Foundation Scholarships, offering guidance to prospective and current students.

Core Principles of WCC Foundation Scholarships

SUNY Westchester Community College Foundation Scholarships are primarily awarded based on two key criteria: financial need and academic merit. The Foundation aims to simplify the process, so for the majority of scholarships, a separate application is not required. This streamlined approach ensures that more students can benefit from these valuable awards.

Determining Financial Need: The Prerequisite

To be considered for any Foundation Scholarship, students must file the appropriate financial aid application(s) to determine their financial need. This is the crucial first step in unlocking potential scholarship opportunities. Filing for financial aid is encouraged for any student, regardless of income, who wishes to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs.

The Role of FAFSA and the NYS DREAM Act

Students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) OR the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) for the upcoming academic year. Furthermore, the Senator José Peralta New York State DREAM Act provides access to New York State-administered student financial aid for undocumented students and others, helping them afford higher education. Students eligible for the NYS DREAM Act must complete a separate application for each program they wish to receive aid from.

Automatic Consideration and Program-Specific Scholarships

Students enrolled in a degree or certificate program who apply for financial aid are automatically considered for a WCCF Scholarship. However, it's important to remember that criteria, application requirements, and deadlines can vary depending on the specific program and scholarship.

Types of Scholarships Offered

The WCC Foundation offers a variety of scholarships tailored to different student needs and academic goals. Here's a glimpse into some of the available opportunities:

Scholarships for Transfer Students

These scholarships are specifically awarded to students who are graduating from WCC and planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a SUNY, CUNY, or private four-year institution.

Last Semester Assistance Scholarships

Faculty and staff members have the opportunity to nominate students for a one-time scholarship to help cover the costs of their final semester at WCC.

Emergency Aid Grants

The Westchester Community College Emergency Aid Grant is available to assist students facing sudden, unforeseen financial emergencies that could disrupt their education.

Outside Scholarships

Many students also receive scholarships from outside sources, which are initially processed through the Business Office. Once the donor sends a check directly to the college, the information is forwarded to the Office of Financial Aid to accurately add the scholarship to the student's financial aid award.

These scholarships may be based on merit, financial need, or a combination of both. Some scholarships may have specific criteria, such as being for students in STEM careers or from low-income families.

Streamlined Scholarship Process

SUNY Westchester Community College has streamlined its scholarship process. For the majority of our scholarships, an application is not required. This process will allow the college to provide a comprehensive financial assistance package in a timelier manner.

Additional Resources and Opportunities

The Scholarship Foundation

The Scholarship Foundation, established in 1998, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing scholarship awards to economically disadvantaged students who meet federal poverty guidelines recognized by the Virginia Department of Education Neighborhood Assistance Program. The Scholarship Foundation applies annually for state tax credits through the Neighborhood Assistance Program. Based on credits received, qualified donors may provide up to 65 percent state tax credits.

Businesses (Sub S, Partnership, LLP, LLC, PC) that contribute at least $616 are eligible for a state tax credit of 65% of the total contribution. Contributions may be in the form of cash, stock, or real estate. Some professional services may also be accepted. Tax credits are available to individuals or married couples that make cash donations. The minimum donation by an individual or married couple must be at least $500. The value of the tax credit is equal to 65% of the donation up to a maximum of $76,923.08 credit per taxable year.

Understanding Scholarship Disbursement

Scholarship funds are generally awarded for tuition and are disbursed within the academic year they are awarded. Any financial assistance received from WCC will be deducted from the student's initial balance. Actual award amounts may vary based on students’ individual eligibility, fund availability, and other factors.

Applying for Scholarships

Students are encouraged to file annually and as early as possible to maximize their chances of receiving financial aid and scholarship opportunities.

Examples of Specific Scholarship Programs

Bison Benefit Scholarship

High school seniors who do not qualify or did not make the deadline for the Bison Benefit Scholarship should attend the Bison Benefit Information Session held in the fall of each year. WCC reserves the right to limit the number of awards.

Woodland Community College Scholarship Program

The Woodland Community College Scholarship Program is administered by the Yuba Community College District Foundation. Scholarships are available for incoming, re-entry, continuing, and transfer students. Enrollment requirements vary per scholarship, with most requiring at least half-time enrollment. A Yuba Community College District (YCCD) student ID number is required to apply. All completed applications are evaluated by Woodland Community College Scholarship Committees for selection of scholarship award recipients.
