The Wentcher Foundation Scholarship: Empowering Chicago Students
The Wentcher Foundation Scholarship stands as an investment in Chicago-area students with high character and bold dreams, providing them with the opportunity to achieve anything through education. Ernie Wentcher, the foundation's founder, believed that no dream was too big for a student with a good education and a desire to succeed. The scholarship is not merely a handout but an investment in individuals, fostering a sense of responsibility to give back and make the most of their opportunities.
Eligibility and Application Requirements
The Wentcher Foundation offers scholarships to high-achieving students, primarily focusing on those from Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Applicants must be US citizens, legal permanent residents, or FAFSA-eligible noncitizens to be eligible for federal financial aid. A minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA is required, and applicants should demonstrate high character and leadership qualities at home, at school, or in their communities. The foundation seeks students who are well-rounded, with involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership roles, honors, and achievements. Emotionally resilient and genuine individuals are highly valued.
CPS Wentcher Scholarship
The CPS Wentcher Scholarship is available to high school seniors attending any Chicago Public High School. This scholarship can award up to $10,000 each year and may be renewed for up to four years of undergraduate schooling. To apply for the CPS Wentcher Scholarship, applicants can find the application link online. It is crucial to promptly notify recommenders and counselors to ensure timely submission of their documents. The majority of the application can be completed by the student entering their information directly into the WizeHive online application system.
Application Process
The Wentcher Foundation hosts the CPS Wentcher Scholarship application through the WizeHive Scholarship Management system. Applications are typically reviewed between February and March, with finalist applicants being notified in March and invited for in-person interviews with the Scholar Selection Committee. Applicants must submit a copy of their FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS), including their Student Aid Index (SAI), after completing the FAFSA. The student’s SAI, along with any recent household changes impacting family finances, will be considered. The Wentcher Foundation staff are available to support general inquiries about the application and how to submit materials, though they cannot assist with completing the application's content.
Oakton College Program (Now Sunset)
For two decades, the Wentcher Foundation invested over $1,000,000 in funding to 210 scholars attending Oakton College. Through Ernie Wentcher's legacy, Oakton Wentcher Scholars were eligible for up to $3,500 a year for two years, plus an opportunity for a two-year transfer scholarship to help complete a Bachelor’s degree. 97 Oakton Wentcher Scholars successfully transferred to a 4-year college and earned their bachelor’s degree.

To receive the Oakton Wentcher Transfer Scholarship award, students needed to be current Oakton Wentcher Scholars, maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and receive transfer admission to a new institution to complete their bachelor's degree. Eligible Oakton Wentcher Scholars were invited to complete a transfer application each spring.
However, the Wentcher Board of Directors decided to sunset the Oakton Program starting in the Spring of 2025. This decision stemmed from a reflection on the foundation's mission and a commitment to focusing limited resources on supporting Wentcher Scholars from the City of Chicago.
Key Traits of Wentcher Scholars
During the interview process, students are asked about their achievements, the obstacles they’ve overcome, and the dreams they wish to fulfill. Wentcher Scholars often share traits such as emotional resilience and genuineness. The foundation seeks individuals who have demonstrated high character and leadership at home, at school, or in their communities.

The impact of the scholarship is significant, allowing recipients to make the most of their education and contribute positively to society.
