Bo Nix: From Auburn Tiger to NFL Quarterback
William V. "Bo" Chapman Nix (born February 25, 2000) is an American professional football quarterback currently playing for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). His journey to the NFL was marked by significant achievements and transitions, beginning with his high school career, continuing through his college years at Auburn and Oregon, and culminating in his current professional career.
Early Life and High School Career
Born in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, Bo Nix spent much of his childhood in the South, particularly in Alabama, where his father, Patrick Nix, coached football. He played at Pinson Valley High School under his father's guidance, achieving remarkable success. Nix set Alabama state records with over 12,000 career total offense yards and 161 career touchdowns (127 passing, 34 rushing). He led Pinson Valley High to consecutive Class 6A state titles and was named Alabama's Mr. Football in 2018. Nix was also recognized as the Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year, a USA Today All-USA offensive player of the year finalist, and an All-America first-team member. His outstanding high school performance earned him a spot in the Under Armour All-America Game. Before Pinson Valley, Nix played at Scottsboro High School, where he passed for 3,463 yards and threw 40 touchdown passes.
College Career at Auburn (2019-2021)
2019: Freshman Phenom
Nix enrolled at Auburn University in January 2019 and was named the starting quarterback on August 20, becoming the first true freshman QB to start a season opener for Auburn since 1946. His debut against Oregon saw him complete 13 of 31 passes for 177 yards with two interceptions, including touchdown passes to Eli Stove and Seth Williams, the latter being the game-winner with just 0:09 remaining. He finished the season with 217-377 passing for 2,542 yards and 16 touchdowns, all Auburn freshman records. He also rushed for 313 yards and seven touchdowns.
Key performances from his freshman year include:
- A win over Tulane where he went 19-37 for 207 yards with a 31-yard TD pass to Will Hastings.
- A game against Kent State with a 1-yard TD rush and a 49-yard TD pass to Eli Stove.
- A game against Texas A&M where he went 12-20 for 100 yards with a 9-yd TD pass to Seth Williams.
- A standout performance against Mississippi State, completing 16 of 21 passes for 335 yards with TDs of 39 and 32 yards to Seth Williams, along with a 9-yard TD run. He was Auburn’s top rusher with 56 yards.
- At Arkansas, he went 12-17 passing for 176 yards, 3 TD, and also had a 4-yard rushing TD.

- A game against Georgia where he completed 30-50 passes for 245 yards with a 3-yard TD to Eli Stove and a 2-yard TD run.
Nix was named SEC Freshman of the Year and earned SEC freshman of the week honors twice (Oregon, Miss St). He was also recognized as a Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 and Manning Award star of the week (Miss St). Academically, he was on the AD Honor Roll and SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll.

2020: Continued Growth
As a returning starter and team captain in 2020, Nix completed 431-734 passes (58.7%) for 4,957 yards over his career. He recorded 28 career TD passes and 14 career TD runs. Highlights from the 2020 season include:
- Against Kentucky, he went 16-27 passing for 233 yards with 3 TD passes.
- Against Arkansas, he went 17-28 for 187 yards with one TD run and one TD pass.
- At Ole Miss, he completed 23-30 passes for 238 yards, including the game-winning 58-yard TD pass to Seth Williams with 1:14 remaining, and a 4-yard TD run.
- Against LSU, he went 18-24 for 300 yards and 3 TD passes, and was Auburn’s top rusher with 81 yards and 1 TD.
- Against Tennessee, he went 17-26 for 220 yards with a 54-yard TD pass to Schwartz.
Nix's streak of consecutive pass attempts without an interception was snapped at 251 at Georgia. He earned Paul Hornung Award honor roll recognition (Kentucky) and was named Manning Award star of the week (Ole Miss). He was also on the SEC academic honor roll.
2021: Final Season at Auburn
In 2021, Nix was a third-year starter at quarterback. Before being sidelined due to injury, he ranked 3rd in career passing yards at Auburn with 7,251 yards, 2nd in pass attempts (1,057) and completions (628), and 5th in career TD passes (39). Notable games from the 2021 season include:
- Against Akron, he went 20-22 passing for 275 yards and 3 scores.
- Against Alabama State, he went 9-17 passing for 108 yards with 2 TD.
- At LSU, he went 23-44 passing for 255 yards, with a 24-yd TD pass to Tyler Fromm, and 75 yards rushing with a 5-yd rushing TD.
- At Arkansas, he went 21-26 for 292 yards with TD passes of 39 and 71 yards and a TD run of 23 yards.
- Against Ole Miss, he recorded 2 rushing TD and 1 passing TD, going 22-30 for 276 yards.
Nix had a streak of 256 consecutive passes without an interception, which was broken against Georgia. He was named Manning Award player of week (Arkansas) and SEC offensive player of week (LSU). He was also a game captain (Akron, Texas A&M) and offensive player of the week multiple times.
Transfer to Oregon (2022-2023)
In December 2021, Nix entered the transfer portal and subsequently joined the University of Oregon. He had two seasons of eligibility remaining due to the NCAA's COVID-19 eligibility waiver for the 2020 season.

2022: A New Beginning
In his first season with the Ducks, Nix led Oregon to a 10-3 record. The season included ranked victories over BYU, UCLA, and Utah, culminating in a 28-27 win over North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl. Nix finished the season with 3,593 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns, and seven interceptions, along with 89 carries for 510 rushing yards and fourteen rushing touchdowns.
2023: Record-Breaking Season
Nix had a record-setting year in 2023, leading Oregon to a successful season and contention for the College Football Playoff. He set the NCAA single-season record for completion percentage at 77.45 (364-of-470). Nix led the nation with 51 total touchdowns and broke Oregon single-season records for completions (364), passing yards (4,508), and passing touchdowns (45), while throwing just three interceptions. The 2023 Ducks went 12-2, appearing in the Pac-12 Championship Game, winning the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, and finishing No. 6 in the final AP Poll.
He was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, finishing third in the voting. In addition to winning the William V. Campbell Trophy® in 2023, Nix was also an AP Third Team All-America selection.
NFL Career with the Denver Broncos (2024-Present)
2024: Rookie Season
The Denver Broncos selected Nix with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. On August 22, he was named the Broncos' starting quarterback for the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, becoming the first Broncos rookie to start since John Elway in 1983.
In his NFL debut against Seattle, Nix completed 26 of 42 passes for 138 yards, two interceptions, and a rushing touchdown in a 26-20 loss. His 138 passing yards set an NFL record for the fewest by a quarterback with 25 or more completions in a game. Nix earned his first win in week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, throwing for 216 yards, a rushing touchdown, and no interceptions in a 26-7 victory. In week 4, he recorded his first career passing touchdown and led the Broncos to a 10-9 upset victory over the New York Jets.

Nix had a standout October, beginning with a three-touchdown performance in a week 5 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders, followed by 216 passing yards and two touchdowns in week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers. In week 7, he led the Broncos to a dominant 33-10 win over the New Orleans Saints, tying the franchise record for rookie quarterback wins. He capped the month with 284 passing yards, four total touchdowns, and a 75.7% completion rate in week 8 against the Carolina Panthers, setting a new franchise record with five wins as a rookie.
In Week 9 against the Baltimore Ravens, Nix caught his first career receiving touchdown on a trick play from receiver Courtland Sutton. Nix was named NFL Rookie of the Week in week 10 after throwing for 215 yards, two touchdowns, and orchestrating a late drive that ended with a potential game-winning field goal being blocked in a 16-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The following week against the Atlanta Falcons, Nix went 28-of-33 for a career-high 307 yards and four touchdowns as the Broncos won 38-6. He was originally the fourth alternate AFC Quarterback in the Pro Bowl, but was invited to play due to opt-outs.
2025: Building on Success
In July 2025, Nix was voted No. 64 on the 2025 NFL Top 100 list. During the offseason, he worked with Drew Brees and Tom House to improve his game.
Personal Life
Bo Nix comes from a football family. His father, Patrick Nix, starred at Auburn and coached him in high school. His grandfather is a high school coaching legend. His brothers, Caleb Nix (Clemson) and Tez Johnson (Oregon), also play college football. His mother, Krista, and his two sisters, Emma Grace and Sara, have been supportive throughout his career.
Nix graduated magna cum laude with a 3.62 GPA in communications from Auburn. He carried a 3.91 post-graduate GPA while at Oregon.
He is married to Izzy Smoke, an Auburn cheerleader. They are expecting their first child. Nix is open about his faith, believing that God has a reason for him being in Denver.
