Delicious in Dungeon: A Culinary Quest with Heart

Delicious in Dungeon, or Dungeon Meshi (Dunmeshi), is a captivating anime about weird food and even weirder friends. The story follows a group of adventurers who descend into a dungeon to rescue a fallen party member, Falin, after she is swallowed by a dragon. The party consists of Laios, the human leader; Marcille, the elf magician; and Chilchuck, the halfling locksmith. To survive in the dungeon and rescue Falin before she is digested, they enlist the help of Senshi, a dwarf chef who proposes they cook and eat the monsters they encounter.

A Unique Blend of Fantasy and Culinary Adventure

The premise of Dunmeshi is simple, yet its execution is brilliant. Mangaka Ryoko Kui, a self-proclaimed geek with a deep love for fantasy tropes and tabletop games, has created a world that is both familiar and refreshingly original. The series assumes the audience has some knowledge of fantasy elements, but it never relies on clichés. Instead, it draws attention to often-neglected aspects of classic fantasy worldbuilding.

As Laios observes, "Every characteristic of an animal serves a purpose, or else it wouldn't be there." Kui applies this principle to the monsters in the dungeon, substantiating them on a level rarely seen. She provides intricate details about their physiology and imagines the best ways to cook them. The focus on food is not merely a gimmick; it's a way to make the characters and their world feel more believable. Characters need to eat, and Dunmeshi explores this basic need in a creative and engaging way.

Even the dungeon itself is treated as a living entity, shaped by the whims of its creator, a "lunatic magician." The dungeon's tunnels and pathways shift like a restless child, and small insect-like creatures act as blood cells, healing wounds in the walls. In the Dunmeshi universe, the lines between monsters, humans, and the environment are blurred.

Complex Characters and Relatable Relationships

Kui extends the same curiosity to her characters as she does to the monsters. Each member of the party is unique, with their own strengths, weaknesses, and quirks.

  • Laios: Laios is the heart of the party, a monster enthusiast who hyper-fixates on his passion to the exclusion of rational thought. While he is determined to rescue his sister, he is equally excited to encounter and eat as many monsters as possible. His lack of social awareness can be off-putting, but his companions appreciate his objective observations and complete acceptance of others. Laios resonates with those who live for their passions and seek others who share their enthusiasm.
  • Marcille: Marcille is a powerful elf magician who struggles with anxiety and a fear of failure. She is initially reluctant to eat monsters but gradually warms to the idea as she realizes it is necessary for survival. Laios pushes Marcille out of her comfort zone, and she learns to embrace the unexpected.
  • Chilchuck: Chilchuck is a halfling locksmith and the most mature member of the group. He is practical, cautious, and often acts as the voice of reason. Chilchuck utilizes his heightened senses to keep his party out of trouble. He prefers to keep his private life separate from his work, understanding the importance of harmony within the group. He is also very guarded towards others due to his experiences with how easy relationships can go south, though he is still shown to be friendly and rely on them, understanding the importance of harmony within the group. He recognizes Laios' talents and skills with navigating the dungeon as well as his good intentions and respects him, often going along with his plans even if he doesn't fully agree with them. He sees Marcille as "the friend who cannot shut up" and gets easily annoyed by her interest in his life, particularly the way she romanticizes his relationship with his wife and children, finding entertainment in messing with her, expecting her to get flustered and whine whenever he teases her. He views Senshi as a skilled cook and capable adventurer. Chilchuck was born in a small village in a basin northeast of the Island and moved to Kahka Brud with his family when he was 14 years old. He got married at age 13 and had three daughters in the span of 3 years: Meijack, Flertom, and Puckpatti. Unfortunately, due to Chilchuck's reluctance to be emotionally open with his wife, she left with their children and has not seen him for many years. He had accompanied multiple parties before joining Laios' and saw many of them split due to interpersonal issues. Dandan was the one to introduce Chilchuck to Laios as a locksmith for hire. He also has a leadership position among the Half-foot population on the Island and often advises other Half-foot individuals to run contracts by the guild before they sign, charging a mediation fee for this service. Chilchuck created this guild to prevent the exploitation and undervaluation of Half-foots as disposable sacrifices. His profile in The Adventurer's Bible confirms that he does rigorous weight management to stay light enough to not set off traps. In terms of modern-day humans, Chilchuck is about fifty years old, as seen when he turns into a Tall-man when affected by the spores of a changeling where he turns into a human who looks to be around fifty years old.
  • Senshi: Senshi is a solitary dwarf with a passion for cooking monsters. He is an outcast from his own people, who are more interested in mining and smithing. Senshi is a skilled warrior and an excellent cook, and he values hard work and providing for others.

The relationships between these characters are complex and relatable. They challenge each other, support each other, and learn from each other. The series explores the idea that great relationships, like good cooking, require balance, experience, patience, and accommodation.

Themes of Acceptance and Belonging

Dunmeshi explores themes of acceptance and belonging. For each of the main characters, belonging has never been easy. Laios' obsession with monsters sets him apart from others, while Marcille struggles with anxiety and self-doubt. Chilchuck's cautious nature can make him seem aloof, and Senshi's solitary lifestyle has left him isolated.

Despite their differences, the characters find a sense of belonging within the party. They learn to appreciate each other's strengths and accept each other's weaknesses. Laios' disinterest in all topics that aren’t monsters makes him incapable of being judgmental. It does not occur to him to think less of people, regardless of who or what they are, what they’ve done or been through. For his companions, this complete acceptance is a precious, novel experience.

The series also touches on the idea that diverse parts come together to form a stronger, more capable whole. Just as bread requires flour, water, and yeast, the party is not functional without each member's unique contributions. Marcille initially believes that her worth depends on her usefulness, while Chilchuck finds it easier to belittle himself than admit how much he cares for his friends. Senshi has learned amazing self-sufficiency but has also become trapped in his own habits. Through their interactions, the characters learn to value themselves and each other.

Adaptation and Visuals

The Delicious in Dungeon anime is produced by Studio Trigger, known for its dynamic and visually stunning productions. The adaptation is faithful to the manga, capturing the humor, heart, and unique world of Ryoko Kui's creation. The animation is consistently great, with memorable action sequences and expressive character designs. The series is directed by a younger staff, and the composer is Yasunori Mitsuda, the legendary games composer responsible for scoring Xenogears and Chrono Cross.

A Recipe for Friendship

Cooking allegories are unavoidable in a series like Dunmeshi, and the anime embraces them. Ingredients in friendships, just as in recipes, need to balance out. If Senshi is the meaty core of the group that gives it shape, Laios is the salt that gives it character, and Chilchuck is the acid that adds enough bitterness to keep them grounded, then Marcille is the fire that keeps them all moving.
