Graduating with honors is a significant academic achievement, marked by Latin terms that signify varying levels of distinction. The requirements to achieve these honors, however, can vary substantially across institutions, colleges, and even specific degree programs. This article aims to shed light on the general meaning of these honors and the typical GPA requirements associated with them, drawing on examples from various programs.
Understanding Academic Honors: Latin Terminology
Academic honors are often designated using Latin terms, each representing a different level of achievement:
Cum Laude: Translating to "With Praise," cum laude signifies graduating with honor. It generally indicates a high GPA. Graduation with honors cum laude requirements vary. Grade point average estimates for cum laude range from 3.5 to 3.7.
Magna Cum Laude: The magna cum laude definition is "With Great Honor." Scholars define magna cum laude meaning "With Great Praise." Usually it means you had the second best grades. The GPA for magna cum laude typically falls between 3.8 and 3.9. Frequent misspellings include: magnum cum laude, magna cum laud, magna cumme laude, magna cun laude, graduated cum laude, or my favorite magma cum laude (hot honors!).
Summa Cum Laude: Most define summa cum laude as "With Highest Praise," and the summa cum laude definition is "With Highest Honor." It usually means highest grades. A summa cum laude GPA is often 4.0 or higher.

GPA Thresholds and Variations
Graduating With Honors Requirements vary. While the general GPA ranges provided above offer a guideline, the specific requirements for graduating with honors can differ significantly depending on the institution and the specific program of study. Some universities consider the overall GPA, while others focus on specific coursework or credits earned after a certain point in the academic career.
For instance, at the University of Florida (UF), several departments have distinct GPA requirements for graduating with honors. Many programs at UF consider the GPA on all courses taken at UF beginning the semester after accumulating 60 credits.
Here are some examples:
Construction Management, M.E. Rinker, Sr. requires a 3.6 GPA in all upper-division accounting coursework and a 3.6 GPA in upper-division courses. Alternatively, a 3.8 GPA in all upper-division accounting coursework and a 3.8 GPA in upper-division courses is also accepted.
For students in Art: Studio, Graphic Design, and Art Education, a 3.75 GPA on all courses taken at UF under the FA student classification beginning the semester after accumulating 60 credits is required, along with the completion of a creative project or thesis. The GPA requirement increases to 3.90 GPA on all courses taken at UF under the FA student classification beginning the semester after accumulating 60 credits, along with the completion of a creative project or thesis. Art history candidates must submit a research paper, while art education candidates submit their teaching portfolio.

Music majors must submit a creative or research project under the guidance of a music faculty member, alongside a 3.75 GPA on all courses taken at UF under the FA student classification beginning the semester after accumulating 60 credits.
Theatre/Dance students need to complete a performance/production project and maintain a 3.75 GPA on all courses taken at UF beginning the semester after accumulating 60 credits. A higher GPA of 3.85 on all courses taken at UF beginning the semester after accumulating 60 credits is also an option.
Microbiology and Cell Science students must have a 3.75 GPA, a grade of S in at least four credits of MCB 4911, MCB 4915 or other department undergraduate research course previously approved, and a grade of B or higher in one of the following: MCB 4503, MCB 5505, PCB 4233, PCB 5235, MCB 5305L or PCB 5136L. A higher GPA of 3.85 follows the same requirements.
Other programs may require a 3.7 GPA in all UF, core, and major courses, with a higher level at 3.9 GPA in all UF, core and major courses.
M.E. Rinker, Sr. also specifies a 3.3 GPA in all upper-division courses, a 3.6 GPA in all upper-division courses, a 3.75 GPA in all upper-division courses, and a 3.8 GPA in all upper-division courses, along with the completion of an approved fourth-year design project.

The School of Teaching and Learning requires a 3.75 GPA on first 18 credits of junior year in PROTEACH; 3.75 or more at the completion of BAE; submission of an approved scholarly project.
Some programs require a 3.7 GPA on all courses taken at UF beginning the semester after accumulating 60 credits, excluding internship, flexible learning courses, and extension courses, along with the completion of a senior paper or a creative project or thesis.
Other colleges may stipulate a 3.6 GPA on all courses taken at UF classified in the college beginning the semester after accumulating 60 credits (excluding internship) and professional courses, or a 3.8 GPA under the same conditions.
Additional Requirements Beyond GPA
In many cases, achieving honors isn't solely dependent on GPA. Many programs incorporate additional requirements, such as:
Thesis or Research Project: Many departments require the completion of a thesis, research project, or other creative work. This often involves faculty evaluation of the completed work. For example, eligible students must have a 3.50 or higher GPA on all courses taken at UF beginning the semester after accumulating 60 credits and completion of, and faculty evaluation of, a thesis, research project or other creative work.
Undergraduate Research: Some distinctions, such as magna cum laude and summa cum laude, may require completing the equivalent of at least six credits of approved undergraduate research, a thesis research project, and the submission of a mentor-approved honors thesis.
Specific Coursework: Certain programs may require specific courses to be completed with a minimum grade. Student must have grade of S in at least four credits of MCB 4911, MCB 4915 or other department undergraduate research course previously approved and grade of B or higher in one of the following: MCB 4503, MCB 5505, PCB 4233, PCB 5235, MCB 5305L or PCB 5136L.
Honors Seminars: Some departments require students to enroll in honors seminars and achieve a specific grade. Student must earn an A or B grade in at least one semester of ENG 4936 Honors Seminar and a minimum grade of B+ in ENG 4970 Honors Thesis.
Department-Specific Examples at UF

Anthropology: Student must register for three credits of ANT 4914 in their final semester and successfully complete and defend an honors thesis.
Astronomy: In addition, student must complete six credits of AST 4911 and write a thesis.
Biology: Student must complete one semester (3-4 credits) of BOT 4911, BIO 4910, BIO 4912 or ZOO 4911 and write a thesis. Student must complete at least six credits of ZOO 4911, BSC 4910, BSC 4912, BOT 4911, complete a thesis research project and submit an honors thesis.
Chemistry: Student must complete six credits of CHM 4910 and write a thesis. Student must also write an honors thesis under supervision of a faculty mentor.
Criminology: Student must defend a thesis and may enroll in CCJ 4970 or an honors-focused course for credit to write a thesis.
Chinese/Japanese: Student must enroll in three credits of CHI 4905 or JPN 4905, Independent Study, and complete a senior honors thesis under CHI 4935 or JPN 4935.
Economics: Student must earn a 3.70 GPA on all courses taken at UF the semester after accumulating 60 credits and a 3.50 GPA for all UF economics classes.
English: Student must earn an A or B grade in at least one semester of ENG 4936 Honors Seminar and a minimum grade of B+ in ENG 4970 Honors Thesis.
Geological Sciences: Students must complete two semesters of GLY 4911 with grades of B or higher and submit an honors thesis.
History: In the fall semester, student must pass the History Honors Seminar: Thesis Workshop while completing thesis research. Then, in the spring semester, student must enroll in HIS 4970: Senior Thesis and write an acceptable thesis. Distinction of magna or summa cum laude is based on faculty evaluation of the thesis.
Interdisciplinary Studies: Student with a GPA of 3.5 or higher must be recommended by two members of the student's supervisory committee, including the principal supervisor, who will affirm that the student conducted an individual project in IDS 4906 (or equivalent).
Jewish Studies: Student must enroll in JST 4970 and complete an honors project.
Linguistics: Student must complete at least three credits of LIN 4905 Individual Study, followed by LIN 4970 Senior Thesis.
Philosophy: Student must complete an honors thesis while enrolled in PHI 4912. A formal proposal must be submitted the semester prior to that during which the student writes the thesis. Upon completion, the thesis is reviewed by the department's undergraduate committee, which also conducts an oral examination. The undergraduate coordinator, in consultation with that committee, will determine the distinction awarded.
Political Science: Student must complete POS 4734, POS 4934 and POS 4970 in order to complete an honors thesis. The program requires a minimum of two semesters of coursework and research.
Psychology: Student must complete and defend a thesis while taking at least one credit of PSY 4970 Senior Thesis.
Religion: Student must complete REL 4932 Honors Thesis.
Russian Studies: 3.50 GPA in Russian studies courses with the following prefixes: RUS, RUT or RUW.
Sociology: Student must complete a senior honors thesis while taking SYA 4931.
Women's Studies: Student must enroll in WST 4970 and complete an honors thesis.
Honors in Other Institutions
The University of Georgia (UGA) awards degrees with honors based on the overall grade point average for all college-level work attempted. Each student completing a baccalaureate degree with an overall grade point average of 4.0 will be designated a First Honor Graduate.
At the University of Louisville, baccalaureate degree students who have earned a minimum of 60 hours of letter-graded degree credit in residence will be eligible for consideration to graduate with academic accolades. Commencement programs will list eligible students as “Candidates for Honors” based on their having earned both undergraduate and program grade point averages of 3.5 or higher prior to the semester preceding graduation. In addition to these minimum criteria, some degree programs allow students to graduate with Distinction upon successful completion of a thesis, paper, or project. Students may graduate With Highest Distinction upon completion of the A&S Senior Thesis. Alternatively, students may graduate with highest distinction with a thesis project and the following GPA requirements: 1) a minimum of 3.75 University and program GPA at the beginning of the semester in which the student plans to graduate, and 2) the 3.75 minimum university and program GPA must be maintained through the final semester prior to graduation.
To graduate as an Honors Scholar in Business at another institution, a COB student must complete at least 24 hours of honors courses with at least 18 hours in the COB; at least 12 hours at the 300 level or above; and at least two upper-level seminar courses (or one seminar plus a senior thesis), at least one of which must be non-business.
In determining eligibility for graduation with Distinction from the Kent School of Social Work and Family Science, Kent takes into consideration not only the university cumulative grade point average (which must be at least 3.5), but also the Program GPA, which is calculated using the grades from all 200+ level courses with the course index of the degree program.
Engineering Honors
Engineering programs often have specific pathways to graduate with honors. For example, there are three different ways to graduate with an Honors designation on an engineering diploma:
Honors Research Distinction (HRD): This earns a diploma designation of graduating “with Honors Research Distinction” in the department in which research was performed. Students must maintain a 3.4 CPHR or higher and will be required to complete undergraduate research under the supervision of a faculty advisor, write a senior thesis, and pass an oral defense of their work. To earn HRD, students must be honors-designated and complete honors research activities.
Honors Contract: This earns a diploma designation of graduating “with Honors in Engineerng”. Students must maintain a 3.4 CPHR or higher and requires careful planning throughout your entire college experience to ensure that you attain experiences that develop your skills in academic coursework, investigational studies, and community leadership.
