What to Wear to Universal Studios: Your Ultimate Guide to Comfort and Style

Planning a trip to Universal Studios is exciting! You're probably thinking about all the rides, shows, and attractions you want to experience. However, one crucial aspect often overlooked is what to wear. Choosing the right outfit can significantly impact your comfort level and overall enjoyment throughout the day. Whether you're visiting Universal Studios Hollywood or Universal Studios Florida, this comprehensive guide will provide you with expert tips and recommendations to ensure you're prepared for a fun-filled day at the parks.

Understanding the Universal Studios Vibe

Before diving into specific clothing recommendations, it's essential to understand the general atmosphere and activities you'll encounter at Universal Studios. Theme parks involve a lot of walking, standing in lines, and potential exposure to various weather conditions. Therefore, prioritize comfort, practicality, and the ability to adapt to changing environments.

Key Considerations

  • Comfort is Key: You'll be on your feet for hours, so comfortable clothing and shoes are a must.
  • Weather Awareness: Check the forecast before you go and dress accordingly. Layers are always a good idea.
  • Park Policies: Be aware of any dress code restrictions, such as prohibitions on clothing with offensive language or attire that could be mistaken for emergency personnel or Universal employees.
  • Activity Planning: Consider the rides and attractions you plan to experience. Some rides may get you wet, while others may require secure footwear.

Essential Clothing Items

Comfortable Shoes: Your Foundation for a Fun Day

Arguably, the most important item you'll wear to Universal Studios is a comfortable pair of shoes. The right footwear can make or break your experience, as you'll be standing in long lines and walking across the park.

  • Sturdy Sandals: If you prefer sandals, opt for well-made, supportive options like Clarks, Merrell, Vionic, or Birkenstocks. Avoid cheap flip-flops, which can easily be lost on rides like "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey."
  • Comfortable Tennis Shoes: If you prefer tennis shoes, choose a pair that provides ample cushioning and support. Pink Adidas are a cute and comfortable option.
  • Waterproof Shoes: For water rides or visits to Volcano Bay, consider waterproof shoes like Tevas or Vessi's. These will keep your feet dry and comfortable throughout the day.

Lightweight and Breathable Clothing: Staying Cool and Comfortable

Florida is hot, especially in the summer. Temperatures can reach into the high 90s and be extremely humid. Lightweight clothing with the option of layers is the best kind of clothes to wear to Universal. One of the best parts of Universal Studios is that while you may have to wait in long lines, a lot of the lines and waiting are done indoors with air conditioning or fans so you may need a light jacket while inside. It also may be chilly while eating or inside the shops.

  • Shorts, Khakis, and Cotton Pants: These are all excellent choices for warm weather.
  • Cotton, Linen, and Lightweight T-Shirts: Opt for breathable fabrics that will keep you cool and comfortable.
  • Layers: Bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings or air-conditioned indoor spaces.
  • Themed Outfits: If you're a fan of Harry Potter, Marvel, or other Universal properties, consider wearing themed outfits to immerse yourself in the experience. Just be sure to follow park policies regarding costumes and masks.

Clothing to Avoid

  • Spandex, Short Dresses, and Tight Clothes: These can be uncomfortable and restrictive, especially on rides.
  • Nylon: This fabric can be hot and sticky in humid weather.
  • High Heels: Theme parks are not the place for high heels. Opt for comfortable, supportive footwear instead.

Essential Accessories

Hats and Sunglasses: Sun Protection is Key

Protecting yourself from the sun is crucial, especially during long days at the park.

  • Hats: Wear a hat to shield your face and neck from the sun.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the bright Florida sun with a good pair of sunglasses.

Chapstick with SPF: Keeping Your Lips Hydrated

It’s important to not only keep your body hydrated but your lips too. Choose one with some SPF in it.

Lanyard: Keeping Your Essentials Close

If you plan on upgrading your tickets to Express or VIP, you will need a lanyard. You can purchase fun themed lanyards when you get there or you can purchase ahead of time but you absolutely should have them. I made all of us our own lanyards which reflected our Hogwarts Houses.

Backpack or Fanny Pack: Carrying Your Essentials

A small backpack or fanny pack is essential for carrying your belongings throughout the day.

  • Daypack/Fannypack: When choosing your park bag keep in mind the bag policies. You can read the full policy here. Some rides don’t allow any bags or personal items. In this case, they do provide small lockers free of charge that can be used during the ride. The “free” time is calculated using the ride’s current wait time and the length of the ride. After that time, it’s a small fee for every half hour so don’t think you can leave your bag in the locker all day for no charge. If your bag is too large for the free lockers you can purchase a bigger locker for your bag. The free lockers are 5.5 in height, 14 in width, and 16.9 in depth. These will easily hold a small bag, phones, wand, and a water bottle or an EMPTY reusable cup (they don’t fit standing up).
  • Essentials to Pack:
    • Sunscreen
    • Portable charger
    • Raincoat
    • Reusable water bottle
    • Snacks
    • First aid kit
    • Hand sanitizer
    • Medication (if needed)
    • Camera & Extra Batteries

Additional Tips

  • Arrive Early: Park opening times vary throughout the year but you should plan on getting there at least an hour before the park opens. Getting there early means you can take your time getting photos in front of the famous globe without a ton of people. You can also walk the red carpet like a celeb and pretend your family is paparazzi, and you can stop into Voodoo Donuts for coffee and the best donut you have ever had.
  • Take a Picture of Your Car and Where You Are Parked: By the end of the day your brain might be so fried you just can’t remember which level you parked on.
  • Go to the Lockers First: Put your backpacks, snacks, water bottles, and jackets in the lockers as soon as you get there.
  • Next, Stop at the Bathrooms: It’s no fun to have to get out of line because someone in your party has decided they have to potty at the exact moment and can’t hold it.
  • Finally, Take a Minute to Review the Map and Figure Out Where You Want to Start Your Day: If you have the Express Pass you want to do all of this pretty quickly so you are ready when they officially open the park.
