Understanding the Student Loan Disbursement Timeline

Navigating the world of student financial aid can be complex, especially when it comes to understanding when you'll actually receive the funds. The student loan disbursement timeline is a critical piece of information for students planning their finances for college. This article breaks down the factors influencing disbursement dates and what you can expect. Student financial aid comes in several different forms. From grants to scholarships and student loans, explore all the ways you can help pay for college.

Factors Influencing Disbursement Dates

Financial aid disbursement dates vary significantly. Here's a breakdown of the key factors:

College Policies

Financial aid disbursement dates depend entirely on the college. While some colleges pay out the money just before the term starts, many won’t disperse the aid until several days or weeks after the first day of classes.

Type of Financial Aid

The type of financial aid you receive can also dictate when the college disburses it. For example, a school might hand out federal loans in two weeks and grants in three weeks. You’ll likely receive at least two disbursements per academic year - for example, one for fall semester and one for spring semester.

Completion of Tasks

You may have to complete certain tasks before you receive your financial aid. Complete any related paperwork or tasks before listed deadlines or it could delay your payments.

Early Disbursement Options

Some colleges provide an early disbursement option, where students receive the money before other students, prior to the start of the semester. Exact requirements depend on the college, and you may not receive all your money early.

Early Aid for Books and Supplies

You can also receive some of your financial aid early if you need to buy books or supplies. As with disbursement timelines, how your college gives you this money depends on the school’s policies. Generally, you’re eligible for early financial aid for books and supplies seven days into the term if you have money left over after your financial aid is applied to your bill. The dates you can charge books will be on the Bookstore's web page. The bookstore web page for published dates for the term. Students will be able to use anticipated financial aid to purchase books/supplies at the bookstore from Friday, May 22 until Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

How Financial Aid is Received

How you receive financial aid depends on the type.

Scholarships and Grants

Whether award money goes directly to you, or the school depends on the organization or state.

Work-Study

Work-study payments come monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly. These are available from your employer according to the payroll schedule.

Application to Student Accounts and Refunds

Your college will first put your financial aid towards your statement, including tuition, room and board, fees, and any other expenses. If there is any excess money, they typically refund the money to you within 14 days of disbursement, usually by direct deposit to your bank account or check. At Valencia we start processing refunds the week of classes after the “no show” reporting period listed on the online calendar Important Dates & Deadlines. Review the chart below to determine when you should expect your refund. Refunds are not the same as the Scheduled Disbursement Date noted in the Campus Solutions Self-Service portal, which represents the earliest date a disbursement can be made for a term, OR the date funds were disbursed onto the student’s account in Campus Solutions. Refunds are when funds and data are sent to BankMobile for distribution to students. For students with a BankMobile Vibe account, refunds should appear in your account the same day the refund is issued.

Specific Examples of Disbursement Schedules

The authorization of financial aid funds for the Fall 2025 semester will run on Friday, August 8, 2025. The anticipated status will prevent the student from being dropped from their classes (as long as it covers the total amount of tuition/fees). The authorization of financial aid funds for the Spring 2026 semester will run on Monday, January 5, 2026. The anticipated status will prevent the student from being dropped from their classes (as long as it covers the total amount of tuition/fees). The authorization of financial aid funds for the Summer 2026 semester will run on Friday, May 22, 2026. The anticipated status will prevent the student from being dropped from their classes (as long as it covers the total amount of tuition/fees).

Impact of Withdrawals and Schedule Changes

Withdrawals

Withdrawing from classes will have an impact on the scheduled disbursement. If you withdraw from class(es), all aid will be held for review and eligibility may need to be recalculated. Important Considerations at Specific Institutions

Liberty University Online

The chart below reflects the setup of a Liberty University Online semester (term) which consists of multiple sub-terms a student can enroll. An online undergraduate student eligible for Federal Pell Grant is attending 3 hours in B and 3 hours in D. An online undergraduate/masters student planning to borrow federal loans is attending 3 hours in B and 3 hours in D. He meets all eligibility requirements and can expect the full loan to release to his student account 21 days after his D term class begins. His refund will be processed within 4 days after the funds are showing paid to his student account on the 25th day of enrollment.

Resident Students

A resident student is enrolled in 12 credit hours, 9 hours are resident courses and 3 hours are in the D term through LU online. The student is eligible for student loans and resident scholarships. Student loans will disburse 21 days after the student begins the resident courses, but scholarships will not disburse until 21 days following the start of the D term.

University of Washington

Financial aid generally begins disbursing one week prior to the first day of the quarter. If these conditions have been met, aid will disburse first to your University student account to pay your tuition, U-PASS, late change, and other university fees. Financial aid funds will not pay the late tuition payment fee and this fee requires a separate payment. Please check your address information on MyUW and update it if necessary. The easiest and quickest way to sign up for direct deposit or to confirm your direct deposit status is through your Financial Aid Status under Student Finances in MyUW. If you have any holds on your aid, it will not disburse. If you have been asked to provide documents or information or have been told that the Financial Aid Office is reviewing your eligibility, follow up with them as soon as possible.

Housing and Food Services (HFS) at UW

The University’s Housing and Food Service (HFS) accounts are billed on a separate system. Generally, if you live in UW Housing, there are some HFS charges added to your University student account at the start of each quarter. Your financial aid will pay these initial charges, but that may not be all that you owe to HFS.

Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) at UW

If you are enrolled in Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) courses, you are generally billed through a separate system. However, some PCE charges may be added to your University Student Account at the start of each quarter. Your financial aid will pay any PCE charges before any remaining aid is sent direct deposit.

Enrollment Requirements at UW

You must be registered for a full-time credit load (12 credits for undergraduates and professional students; 10 credits for graduate students) in order for aid, except Stafford and PLUS Loans, to be disbursed. If you have been offered aid as a less than full-time student see the Financial Aid Office for minimum credit load information. After the start of classes, if you drop below full-time enrollment, aid already disbursed to pay charges on your account will not be canceled; however, no additional aid will be disbursed to you.

First-Time Borrowers at UW

If you are a first time borrower at the UW with a Stafford, Unsubsidized or Graduate PLUS loan, you will be required to complete Entrance Counseling before your loan can be disbursed. Generally students who borrowed through the Federal Direct Stafford Loan Program last year and signed a promissory note will not be required to sign a new promissory note for a Federal Direct Stafford or Unsubsidized Stafford Loan this year. If you borrowed a GPLUS in the previous year usually you do not have to sign a master promissory note again. Each year the government’s direct loan servicer performs a credit check.

Parent Loans (PLUS) at UW

As part of the application process, a credit check will be completed. If your parent’s credit is approved, they will then complete a master promissory note on the same site. If their credit is denied, endorser options will be presented to them. Parent Loans are disbursed to the student’s University student account to pay any charges. When completing the application, parent borrowers indicate whether any remaining loan proceeds should disburse directly to the student or to the parent.

Loan Arrival Confirmation at UW

Your loan cannot be disbursed until the funds have been received from the lender. You can confirm that the aid has arrived by reviewing MyUW approximately a week before the beginning of the quarter. If your lender disburses your loan by check, you may need to endorse the loan check in Student Fiscal Services. Short term loans may be arranged through MyUW Personal Services.

Withdrawal Consequences at UW

If you withdraw before the start of classes, you must repay any financial aid you have received. If you withdraw during the quarter, you may have to repay some of your aid. If you do not officially withdraw but fail to pass any classes, you will be considered to have unofficially withdrawn and may have to repay aid. A withdrawal may affect your future aid eligibility. Please see the Time Schedule or Withdrawal and Refund for information on refunds.
