Navigating College Semester Start Dates: A Comprehensive Guide
Understanding college semester start dates and related deadlines is crucial for both new and continuing students. Missing these dates can lead to missed opportunities, financial penalties, or academic setbacks. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of key dates and processes to help students successfully navigate their college journey.
Academic Calendars: Your Roadmap to Success
Academic calendars are essential tools for students. You’ll use academic calendars to find things like the last day to add a class to your schedule, the last day to drop a class to be eligible for a refund or credit against outstanding fees, and the last day to petition for pass/no pass grading. They outline important deadlines and events throughout the academic year. Be sure to bookmark this page and put the dates important to you in your calendar! These calendars contain critical information, including:
- Registration Dates: Dates for priority, general, and open registration periods.
- Add/Drop Deadlines: The last days to add or drop courses with or without financial penalties or transcript notations.
- Payment Deadlines: Dates by which tuition and fees must be paid to avoid enrollment cancellation.
- Withdrawal Deadlines: The last day to withdraw from a course with a "W" on your transcript.
- Holiday and Break Schedules: Dates when the college is closed or classes are not in session.
- Graduation Petition Deadlines: The deadline to apply for graduation.
- Final Exam Schedules: The period in which final exams are administered.
One important note: To find deadline dates for fast track / short term classes that last less than 18 weeks, you’ll need to check InSite.
Understanding Registration Periods
Colleges typically employ a tiered registration system that prioritizes certain student groups. Understanding these groups and their registration timelines is essential for securing desired courses.
Priority Registration
Priority registration is offered to students who meet specific criteria. Students who have between 24 credits left to complete their credential, student athletes, and student veterans are eligible for priority registration. Other groups that may qualify for priority registration include:

Registration Processes for New and Continuing Students
The registration process differs slightly for new and continuing students.
New Students
New students are strongly encouraged to complete the Admissions and Registration processes as early as possible, preferably by mid-July for fall entering students. The Admissions process for new students includes placement testing, new student orientation, financial aid processing, career advising and academic program selection, and initial course selection.

Continuing Students
Continuing students are strongly encouraged to complete the registration process as early as possible to ensure the best course and schedule availability.
Making Changes to Your Schedule
Students may need to revise their schedules after the initial registration period. Colleges typically offer a schedule revision period. College credit students who have enrolled in at least one class prior to the start of the semester are permitted to make changes to their 16-week classes during the first week of class.
Dynamic Date Sessions (DDS)
Some classes do not follow the standard start and end dates. Dynamic Date Session (DDS) includes Other, Winter, and Early Summer Classes. Deadline periods for these classes are class specific instead of session specific.
Financial Considerations
Registration fees are due at the time of registration. If you decide not to take a course, you will need to drop the course by the last day to be eligible or for a credit on your account to remove outstanding fees. If you do not drop the class by the deadline, you will be responsible for all outstanding fees even if you don’t complete the course.
