Navigating the Academic Calendar: A Comprehensive Guide

Understanding the academic calendar is crucial for students, faculty, and staff alike. It serves as a roadmap for the academic year, outlining important dates, deadlines, and events. This guide provides a detailed overview of the key components of an academic calendar, helping you stay organized and informed throughout your academic journey.

Introduction to the Academic Calendar

An academic calendar is a schedule that outlines the dates and deadlines for various academic activities within an educational institution. It includes dates for the beginning and end of semesters, registration periods, holidays, exam periods, and other important events.

Key Components of an Academic Calendar

Registration Deadlines

The academic calendar specifies deadlines for various registration-related activities:

  • Pre-registration deadlines: These deadlines mark the end of the period during which students can pre-register for courses in upcoming semesters (Fall, Spring, IAP, Summer). For example, the Fall pre-registration deadline allows students to secure their spots in desired courses before the semester begins. Pre-registration closes at 5 PM on the specified date.
  • Registration deadlines: These are the final deadlines to register for courses in a given semester. Missing this deadline may result in late fees or the inability to enroll in courses.
  • Add Date: This date signifies the deadline to add a course. After this day, students may need instructor permission to add a class. Once an instructor approves enrollment, they will work with the department directly to enroll the student in the course.
  • Summer registration deadline: Specific to summer sessions, this deadline indicates the last day to register for summer courses.
  • Late Registration Fee: A $50.00 late registration fee may apply, but it does not apply to ASU Online students.

Drop and Revision Deadlines

These deadlines are critical for students who need to adjust their course schedules:

  • Drop Date: This is the deadline to drop a course without it appearing on the transcript.
  • Drop/Revision Deadline: All drops or schedule revisions made after this date will require the submission of a Schedule Revision Request through the Enrollment Wizard.

Degree Application Deadlines

Students planning to graduate need to adhere to these deadlines:

  • Degree application deadlines: These deadlines apply to students seeking degrees in September, February, or May.

Grade Deadlines

Faculty members must submit grades by these deadlines:

  • Grade deadlines: These deadlines ensure timely processing of grades for each semester or session.

Minor Completion Date

  • Minor completion date: This is the deadline for completing all requirements for a minor.

Important Dates and Holidays

The academic calendar also includes important dates and holidays:

  • First day of classes: This marks the official start of each semester or session. For example, in Spring 2026, Session A and Session C classes began on January 12, while Session B classes began on March 16.
  • Last day of classes: This signifies the end of instruction for the semester.
  • Reading Day: Designated as a day for students to study, review, and prepare for final examinations.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: The University is closed, and there are no classes on this day.
  • Wellness Day: Wellness Days are scheduled each year as a way for students to take a break, re-center themselves and focus on their holistic well-being. There are no classes on Wellness Days and instructors should avoid any tests or deadlines on that day and the day following the Wellness Day.
  • Spring Break: A week-long break from classes, typically occurring in March. In 2026, Spring Break was from March 16-20.
  • Fall Break: A short break from classes, usually spanning a few days in October. In 2026, Fall Break was from October 19-20.
  • Labor Day: The University is closed, and there are no classes on this day.
  • Thanksgiving Holiday: The University is closed for several days during the Thanksgiving holiday. In 2026, the holiday was observed from November 25-27.

Session Specific Dates

Some institutions offer courses in multiple sessions within a semester:

  • Session A, B, C: These sessions have specific start and end dates, as well as unique registration and drop deadlines. For Spring 2026, Session A ran from January 12 to March 3, Session B from March 16 to May 1 (or May 5 for some online courses), and Session C from January 12 to May 1.
  • 8-week 2 classes: For courses offered in the second 8-week session, specific deadlines apply for adding and dropping courses. For example, the last day to add a course was October 8, and the last day to drop without a W grade was October 15.

Other Important Information

  • Subjects with no final exam: For undergraduate subjects with no final exam, no test may be given, and there may be at most one assignment due between a specific date and the end of the last scheduled class period in the subject.
  • Schedule of Classes Available: The schedule of classes for upcoming semesters is typically published well in advance. For example, the schedule for the 2026 Fall term was published in March 2026.
  • Enrollment begins: Enrollment for upcoming semesters typically begins a few weeks after the schedule is published.
  • Census Date/Official Enrollment Date: This is the last day to add a course with permission of instructor. It is also the last day for tuition refunds due to dropping a course or changing from credit to audit. For undergraduate students taking classes in the second 8-week session of the semester, the last day to drop below 12 hours or without a W grade is NOT the same as Census Date.
  • Academic Status Reports: Faculty have the opportunity to provide weekly feedback during each session. Students can view ASRs in My ASU within 24 hours after each weekly reporting period closes on Sundays.
  • Residency Classification Petition Deadline: This is the deadline to submit a petition for residency classification.
  • Tuition & Fees 100% Refund Deadline: For more information, see Tuition and Refund Policy. Note: If you choose to drop a class or withdraw from ASU after this deadline, you may receive a bill for the financial aid used to cover those classes.
  • Last day to submit a withdrawal request for the term.

Understanding Specific Policies

  • Adding Courses: The last day to add a course without permission of instructor is specified in the academic calendar. After this day, students must contact the instructor for approval.
  • Waitlists: Waitlists for ALL classes are dropped overnight after the fifth day of class.
  • Schedule Revisions: All drops or schedule revisions made after the Drop/Revision Deadline will require the submission of a Schedule Revision Request through the Enrollment Wizard in MyPack Portal.
  • Final Week of Semester: Lab tests, semester project reports and presentations are permissible during the final week of classes. Papers and homework may have a due date during the final week of classes only if scheduled in the syllabus. However, in order for students to prepare for final examinations, faculty members may not assign other tests, quizzes or additional papers during the final week of classes. Assignments should not have a due date during the final exam period unless the assignment constitutes a part of the final exam. Exceptions to this policy must be approved in advance by the department head and the dean of the college involved.

Accessing the Academic Calendar

Academic calendars are typically available on the university's website. They can often be found in PDF format for easy downloading and printing. Date search accepts variations of multiple standard date formats (e.g. Feb 27 2026, February 2026, 02/27/26, etc.). Past academic calendars are also often available for reference. For more information on academic activities included on the academic calendar, refer to the Academic Calendar Glossary.

Importance of Regularly Checking the Academic Calendar

The academic calendar is subject to periodic review and revision. Regularly checking the academic calendar ensures that you are aware of any changes or updates to important dates and deadlines. This helps you avoid missing deadlines and stay on track with your academic goals.
