Decoding the SAT Score Release: A Comprehensive Guide

Taking the SAT is a significant milestone in the journey toward college. After the exam, the next important step is receiving your scores. This article provides a detailed overview of when you can expect your SAT scores, what time they are typically released, and other essential information related to score reporting and interpretation.

When to Expect Your SAT Scores

According to the College Board, SAT scores are generally available online through your College Board account approximately two weeks (13 to 14 days) after the test day. While the College Board officially states that scores will be available within 2-4 weeks after test day, data indicates that most students receive their scores around the 2-week mark.

For instance, scores from the October 4, 2025 test were released on Friday, October 17, 2025. The chart below shows when you'll be able to see your SAT scores for the test dates in the 2025-2026 school year. As you'll see in the chart, for most of these test dates, you'll get your results just 13-14 days after you take the SAT.

Understanding the Score Release Time

SAT scores are not released all at once; instead, they are rolled out throughout the day. On your score release day about half of all students will see their scores by 8 am Eastern Time (ET). Sometimes it's as early as 5 am ET (2 am Pacific Time). The other half will see their scores by 8 pm ET (5 pm Pacific).

Students are encouraged to check their College Board account or the BigFuture School app to see if their scores have been released. It's important to remember that the release time isn't always exact, so avoid excessive refreshing of your account.

Potential Reasons for Score Delays

While most students receive their scores within the expected timeframe, there are a few possible reasons why scores might be delayed:

  • Technical Issues: Technical issues during test administration can sometimes cause delays.
  • Random Security Reviews: The College Board might conduct random audits of tests to ensure scoring accuracy, and your test could be selected.
  • Testing Irregularities: Irregularities at specific test centers could lead to delays.
  • Unusually Large Score Improvement: If your test was flagged because you improved by an unusually large number of points, such as 400 or 500 points.
  • College Board Running Behind: Sometimes, the delay might simply be due to the College Board running behind schedule.

In rare cases, scores may be cancelled entirely if the College Board suspects misconduct, such as cheating. If this occurs: Your scores will not be released to you or any colleges, you will be notified of the score cancellation and the test fee is typically not refunded.

Accessing Your Scores and Sending Them to Colleges

You can view your scores by logging into your College Board account. Make sure to have your College Board username and password on hand so you can easily sign into your account and view your scores. Once logged in, you can also see whether colleges got your scores. Just go to the "My Scores Sent To" page. If they were sent, the page will say "received" for each college.

Colleges you chose to send your SAT scores to will receive them about three to four weeks after the exam date. Your colleges will get your scores within 10 days after you receive them (if you've indicated them as score recipients).

If you need your scores to get to your colleges sooner, you can opt for rush reporting, which costs an extra $31 (on top of the $15 per report).

What to Do After Receiving Your Scores

Once you receive your SAT scores, you can decide if you're satisfied or if you want to test again. While you shouldn't stay up all night wondering, "When will I get my SAT scores?" and trying to will your scores to appear on-screen, you'll benefit from checking the same day they're released. Why? If you're satisfied with your scores and have more than four schools to send them to, start sending additional score reports to colleges. Not satisfied with your scores? You can base your decision to retest on several factors. On a related note, because a lot of colleges superscore the SAT, you won't have to worry about accidentally scoring worse on one or more sections.
