Understanding TWU Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide to Disbursement and Eligibility

Texas Woman's University (TWU) provides numerous financial aid opportunities to its students, including a wide array of scholarships. These scholarships, which include merit-based, departmental, endowed, and need-based awards, help students finance their education. TWU awards more than $10 million in scholarships annually. This article provides a detailed overview of the scholarship disbursement timeline, eligibility criteria, and various scholarship programs available at TWU.

General Scholarship Information

Scholarships at TWU are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis, based on merit, until funding is exhausted. It is crucial to note that all scholarships and their respective amounts are subject to budgetary considerations and can be changed at any time without prior notice. For the most up-to-date information, students should refer to the Scholarships page on the TWU website.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for scholarships, students must ensure that all required admission applications and academic transcripts are processed by the TWU Admission's Office or Graduate Admission's Office before the application deadline. It's important to account for the processing time of these documents. Most scholarships require a minimum GPA of 3.0 for undergraduates and 3.2 for graduates. However, meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee selection, as a competitive process is in place. No offers can be sent prior to admission.

Application Process

Prospective scholarship applicants must first apply for admission to TWU through Apply Texas. After applying for admission, applicants need to create a Pioneer Portal account before applying to the Pioneer Scholarship System. Students do not need to be admitted to apply for scholarships. The application process involves the following steps:

  1. Sign in to the Pioneer Scholarship System using the Pioneer Portal username and password.
  2. Complete the General Application and submit it to be auto-matched for all individualized recommended scholarship opportunities.
  3. Review and complete all recommended opportunity applications for which you may be qualified before each deadline. Failure to complete applications promptly may remove students from additional scholarship consideration.
  4. Scholarship offers are subject to timely acceptance in the Pioneer Scholarship System.

Scholarship Disbursement

Scholarship awards are made in the Fall and Spring semesters unless otherwise stated. Scholarships will post as anticipated aid and will disburse to student accounts after minimum enrollment requirements have been determined. Lack of attendance voids scholarship offers.

For the Fall and Spring semesters, financial aid funds, including student loans, will disburse on the 1st day of classes for that semester. A disbursement/transmittal is when your financial aid is transferred to the Bursar’s Office to apply toward your outstanding charges.

Renewability

For renewable scholarships, students must meet the minimum requirements as stated on their scholarship offer letter. As long as requirements are met, scholarships are automatically renewed after grades are audited at the end of the spring semester (May 20). Failure to meet minimum GPA requirements may cause the scholarship to be canceled. Most scholarships require a minimum GPA of 3.0 for undergraduates and 3.2 for graduates. Failure to meet minimum enrollment requirements may cause the scholarship to be canceled. Most scholarships require a minimum of 12 credit hours of enrollment for undergraduates and 9 credit hours for graduates. Typically, renewable scholarships may be held for a total of:

  • Four consecutive years or completion of degree for first-time-in-college students.
  • Two to three consecutive years for transfer students (depending on the number of hours transferred).
  • Two consecutive years for master's students.
  • Three consecutive years for MFA students.
  • Three consecutive years for doctoral students.

Awards must be accepted through the Pioneer Scholarship System, including Post-Acceptance questions (if applicable). Scholarships will not post to student accounts until these steps are completed.

Specific Scholarship Programs

TWU offers a variety of scholarship programs, each with its own eligibility criteria and benefits. Here are some notable scholarship programs:

General Academic Merit Scholarships

Undergraduate students who have been admitted to TWU as degree-seeking students are automatically considered for General Academic Merit Scholarships. No scholarship application is required for these scholarships. Entering first-time-in-college and transfer students with less than 13 semester credit hours (excluding dual semester credit hours) may be eligible. These scholarships are awarded based on the combination of high school grade point average, class rank, and SAT/ACT scores (if available).

Terry Foundation Scholarship

This is TWU's most prestigious scholarship, bridging the gap uncovered by other aid to provide full cost of attendance and a $1,500/year book stipend for up to four years. One recipient is chosen from the new TWU applicant pool, and no scholarship application is required. Terry Scholarships are available to selected entering first-time-in-college students annually. The Terry Foundation is a Houston-based organization founded to provide scholarships to outstanding Texas high school graduates for attendance at public universities within the state. This first-time-in-college scholarship provides up to full tuition, fees, room and board on campus, books, and supplies. This scholarship is renewable for four years if all scholarship requirements are maintained.

Legacy Leaders Program

Students selected for the Legacy Leaders Program demonstrate leadership ability, maintain high academic standards, and are invested in learning more about government and non-profit organizations to become future community leaders and influencers. Legacy Leaders will participate in a host of programs and opportunities that will expand their knowledge and networks. Students will actively participate in the program each year. An $11,000 scholarship is awarded to Legacy Leaders and is renewable for up to four years if all requirements are maintained. This scholarship may be combined with other institutional scholarships and the amount may be adjusted to prevent exceeding cost of attendance. Students must meet both academic and participatory requirements for scholarship renewal. Minimum required GPA is 3.0. Demonstrated ability to lead in high school or community and successful completion of an interview are also required.

President’s Leadership Council (PLC) Scholarship Program

The President’s Leadership Council (PLC) Scholarship Program is open to first-time in college students starting in the fall semester. Students who are selected to join the President’s Leadership Council demonstrate the ability to lead, have high academic standards, and are committed to being leaders at Texas Woman's University. First-year PLC students are given unique opportunities to explore and develop their leadership skills together. This includes, but is not limited to, participating in the PLC Living Learning Community and opportunities to interact with TWU’s Chancellor and President. A $5,000 scholarship is awarded to PLC students and is renewable for up to four years. Students must meet both academic and participatory requirements in order for the scholarship to be renewed. Selection criteria is based on a combination of GPA (3.0 minimum), SAT/ACT scores (if available), high school ranking, demonstrated ability to lead in high school or community as illustrated through the Leadership Resume and Essays, and successful completion of an interview.

Dieb-MacDavid Scholarship

This scholarship is available to selected entering first-time-in-college students who graduate from Denton High School. The Dieb-MacDavid is a last-dollar scholarship providing funds up to $5000 per academic year at Texas Woman’s University to cover tuition and fees that have not been covered by other grants or scholarships. It may be held for a total of four consecutive academic years, as long as requirements are maintained.

Texas Leadership Scholar Program

The Texas Leadership Scholar Program is available to selected first-time-in-college students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership potential, and financial need. The Texas Leadership Scholars Program, supported by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), was created to recognize and support high-achieving Texas high school graduates as they pursue higher education at participating public universities across the state. This last-dollar scholarship works in coordination with a student’s federal, state, and institutional aid, which are applied first to cover tuition and fees. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years, contingent upon continued eligibility and satisfactory academic progress. To be eligible, students must graduate from an accredited Texas high school, rank in the top 10% of their class or be nominated by a school official, and show evidence of leadership and service within their school and community. Financial need must be demonstrated through completion of the FAFSA or TASFA. This scholarship provides $2,500 per academic year and is renewable for up to four years. Recipients are chosen from among the Honors Scholars Program applicant pool.

Zero Tuition Guarantee

Building on a legacy of providing a top-notch education to local high school graduates, Texas Woman’s launched partnerships with several high schools and community colleges in Texas. These partnerships provide scholarships, assured admission, or support to top students. The Zero Tuition Guarantee helps eligible students pay the gap between regular tuition and mandatory fees and what is paid through the Federal Pell Grant and other gift aid (i.e., institutional scholarships, other federal grants, state grants, and institutional grants).

Transfer Scholarships

Undergraduate students transferring to TWU from accredited community colleges or four-year universities with at least 13 semester credit hours may qualify for transfer scholarships. Awards are at least $2,000 per year for up to three years or completion of the bachelor’s degree, whichever is shorter. This scholarship is awarded based on a combination of cumulative grade point average and the number of semester credit hours transferred to TWU. Post-baccalaureate students are not eligible for this scholarship.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Undergraduate students transferring to TWU for the fall semester who are active members of Phi Theta Kappa in good standing may apply for this scholarship. Documentation of membership must be submitted through the Pioneer Scholarship System. Full-time enrollment and a 3.5 grade point average are required for first-year consideration. A 3.0 GPA is required for renewal. This $2000 award/year may be held for up to two years or completion of the bachelor’s degree, whichever is shorter, as long as scholarship requirements are maintained.

MAKCOBE Innovator Scholarship

The MAKCOBE Innovator Scholarship program helps graduate, post-baccalaureate, and undergraduate students foster the spirit of entrepreneurship and become future business owners. This scholarship provides $5,000 per academic year and it is not renewable. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, enroll full-time, and undergraduate applicants must have earned at least 40 semester credit hours to be considered.

Honors Scholar Transfer Scholarship

This scholarship is primarily designed for undergraduate students transferring to TWU. Recipients must enroll full-time and maintain a 3.3 grade point average. Recipients must maintain progress toward completing Honors requirements with an average of 6 hours per year. Awards are $2,000 per year for up to two years if all criteria continue to be met.

Departmental and Alumni Scholarships

Hundreds of endowed and donor-gifted scholarships are awarded each year. Most academic departments and alumni groups have scholarship funds available. Department awards are selected from applications made through the TWU online scholarship system prior to the March 1 deadline. Awards are predominantly made based on academic achievement and major.

Financial Aid and Enrollment Requirements

Most financial aid programs, including grants and student loans, require students to enroll in and maintain a minimum of half-time enrollment in degree applicable credit hours. Financial need is used to determine what financial aid programs students are eligible to receive.

Full-time and half-time status is based on the number of credit hours a student registers for during a particular semester. Financial aid and scholarships will have specific enrollment requirements depending on the aid program. A student may not be eligible for aid if they enroll less than half-time.

Additional Financial Aid Options

Student Loans

The University administers loan programs whereby students can borrow a substantial part of the expenses of pursuing university study. Repayment of loans begins six months after the recipient has ceased enrollment as at least a half-time student (six semester credit hours per semester). Students who receive loans as part of their financial aid award must complete Entrance Loan Counseling prior to receiving the loan funds.

Federal Direct Subsidized Loan

This loan is available to undergraduate students only on the basis of documented financial need. Repayment and interest are deferred until six months after the student graduates or ceases to be enrolled for at least half-time. The interest rate is variable up to 8.25% and is adjusted each year on July 1. The borrower is notified of the actual interest rate on a disclosure statement provided by their federal loan servicer. The maximum annual and aggregate loan limits are determined based on the student’s classification and dependency status.

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan

This loan is available to undergraduate students or graduate/professional students and does not require documented financial need. Repayment is deferred until six months after the student graduates or ceases to be enrolled at least half-time. Interest accrues from the date of disbursement at a variable rate not to exceed 9% annually. The federal government sets the interest rate each year. The borrower is notified of the actual interest rate on a disclosure statement provided by their federal loan servicer. The maximum annual and aggregate loan limits are determined based on the student’s classification and dependency status.

Federal Nursing Student Loan Program

The University participates in the Nursing Student Loan Program, which was established by the Nursing Training Act of 1964. This loan is available to undergraduate and graduate nursing majors on the basis of financial need. The interest rate is currently 5% annually. Repayment and interest are deferred until nine months after a borrower graduates or ceases to be enrolled at least half-time in the College of Nursing.

Federal Nursing Student Loan Maximums

Borrower's Academic LevelAnnual Maximum
Freshman & Sophomore$2,500
Junior & Senior$4,000
Graduate$4,000

The aggregate/cumulative maximum is $13,000 including amounts borrowed for both undergraduate and graduate study.

Federal Direct PLUS Loan

This loan is available to the parent of a dependent student for the student’s educational expenses. Parents may borrow up to the student’s cost of attendance minus other financial aid annually. Generally, repayment begins 60 days after the final loan disbursement for the loan period, but parents may choose to defer repayment until the student graduates or leaves school. Interest accrues from the date of disbursement at a variable rate not to exceed 9% annually. The federal government sets the rate each year. This loan does not require an evaluation of financial need to determine eligibility but may require a review of the parent borrower’s credit history. The Department of Education will run a credit history check to determine eligibility for a Federal Direct PLUS loan. The department will provide information to parents about other options (i.e. pursue a co-signor/endorser or appeal the decision) if there is adverse credit history.

Grants

Your grant eligibility can change from year to year based on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), enrollment status, or available funding. Your Pell Grant amount can change based on any change you made to your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), enrollment status or attendance. You are considered for your maximum grant eligibility at the time you are awarded.

Budget Review Request

If a student believes the Cost of Attendance (COA) used in determining their financial aid was insufficient, they may request a review to increase their COA (and aid eligibility) with a Budget Review Request form found on the Forms page.

Student Aid Index (SAI) Recalculation

If a student or their parent(s), if applicable, have been adversely affected by extraordinary circumstances that have reduced their ability to pay for college expenses, the financial aid office can review those circumstances in order to recalculate the Student Aid Index (SAI). This could potentially increase eligibility for need-based aid subject to the availability of funding.

Refunds and Dropping/Withdrawing from Courses

All refunds for excess financial aid, loans, and credit balances due for dropped classes, housing deposits, or other account adjustments are sent to BankMobile Disbursements. After their first registration at TWU, new students can select their refund preference by selecting Make Refund Choice in their Pioneer Portal. Automatic processes will begin refunding financial aid recipients after late registration ends each term and will continue throughout the term.

Refund dates and reimbursements for dropped courses and withdrawals are established pursuant to the Texas Education Code (TEC) 54.006, Refund or Adjustment of Tuition and Mandatory Fees for Dropped courses and Student Withdrawals. Students receiving financial aid should contact the Financial Aid Office before dropping or withdrawing since a reduction of classes may affect previously applied financial aid awards and refunds.

  • Dropping Courses: 100% refund for dropped course(s) thru the 12th class day of long terms and the 2nd class day of short sessions. No percentage refunds for drops after these dates.
  • Withdrawing from Courses: Percentage based refunds as defined in Academic Calendar and under Dates. No refunds after 20th class day of long terms or 2nd class day of short sessions. Student is not enrolled in courses for the semester.

Education Abroad Scholarships

Education Abroad provides a range of services for the TWU community, including: Education Abroad student advising and registration, assistance with grants and scholarships, and development of TWU Faculty-Led abroad programs. As part of TWU mandatory fees, each semester students contribute toward the International Education Fee. This fund assists students participating in approved TWU education abroad programs outside of the United States. The Education Abroad Scholarship (EAS) is open to all TWU students, including international students, meeting the eligibility requirements as stipulated within the application. Students may apply up to 1 year in advance of their departure, with scholarship awards ranging from $500 - $1,500. The TWU Education Abroad Scholarship is now open and will close on March 15, 2026. Recipients must be receiving new course credit for the program they are participating in. Review of your application will begin after the submission deadline. Please be aware of the upcoming payment deadlines for your abroad program, as you may need to make arrangements to pay your provider while your EAS application is under review.

Other Important Information

Pioneer Portal

Current students must access the scholarship system using their TWU Pioneer Portal account username and password. New students who have applied to TWU have the ability to set up a Pioneer Portal account, even if they have not enrolled in classes yet.

Saving Applications

Yes. Just click “Save and Exit” on the bottom left corner of the screen.

Completing Applications

If you do not meet all of the requirements for a scholarship, do not finish the application for that scholarship.

Additional Scholarships

Yes, if you already have a scholarship or scholarships, you can apply for more.

Registration Requirements

Before registering, students must complete a series of state or institutionally-mandated acknowledgments. Notice that these requirements are due will appear on your Student Self-Service home page. These actions work best in Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Please note these items reset frequently. If you are attempting to register for courses and the Register button (or drop button if you're trying to drop a course) is grayed out, please check your to-do list. Because sections fill quickly, please register early. If the section you want is closed (full), check for availability in another section.

If you are retaking only one part of a co-requisite pair because you have previously passed either the lab or the lecture (i.e., passed the lab, retaking the lecture), in that case, you must have permission from the academic department to register for the course. You will complete the Drop/Add form and submit it to the academic department. If approved, they will send the form and specify their approval to the Registrar's Office. The Registrar's Office will then register you for the approved section.

If you are registering for a course with a prerequisite and took the prerequisite course at another college or university, you must contact your advisor. Your advisor will review your academic record to determine if the transferred course is equivalent to the prerequisite at TWU. If approved, they may submit a prerequisite waiver to the Registrar's Office.

All restrictions and holds must be resolved before registration actions can be completed. If you are an undergraduate who has not attended for a period of one year, or a graduate student who has not attended for a period of two years, your program will be closed due to inactivity. If you wish to return to TWU, you must reapply through ApplyTexas.

Code of Conduct for Financial Aid Professionals

In compliance with the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008, TWU has established a Code of Conduct for Financial Aid professionals. This code ensures ethical practices and prohibits conflicts of interest. Financial Aid employees are held to the following standards:

  1. Prohibited from conflicts of interest in respect to loans.
  2. Prohibited from revenue sharing arrangements with any lender.
  3. Prohibited from the soliciting or accepting of gifts from a lender, guarantor, or servicer. Gifts include any item having a monetary value of more than a de minimus amount.
  4. Prohibited from receipt of any fees, payments, or any other financial benefits for consulting services by anyone with responsibilities in respect to education loans.
  5. Prohibited from assigning first-time borrower’s loans to a particular lender and not delaying certification of any loan regardless of the lender or guaranty agency the borrower selects.
