Cooper Manning: More Than Just the Brother of NFL Legends
Cooper Archibald Manning, born on March 6, 1974, is an American entrepreneur, television personality, and the eldest of the famed Manning brothers. While his younger brothers, Peyton and Eli, achieved legendary status as Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL), Cooper carved his own successful path in business and media. He is the host of "The Manning Hour" for Fox Sports and serves as principal and senior managing director of investor relations for AJ Capital Partners.
Early Life and Promising Football Career
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Cooper Manning was a highly ranked prospect coming out of Isidore Newman High School. Following in his father Archie's footsteps, he committed to the University of Mississippi, where Archie and later his brother Eli also played football. Cooper excelled as a wide receiver, catching passes from his younger brother, Peyton.
Spinal Stenosis Diagnosis
Unfortunately, Cooper's promising football career was cut short before his freshman season at Ole Miss due to a diagnosis of spinal stenosis in 1992. During practices before school Cooper began feeling numbness in his fingers and toes. A visit to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, revealed that he had a narrowing of the spine and pinching of the nerves. This condition forced him to end his playing career prematurely.
Career Beyond Football
Despite the setback, Cooper Manning found success in the business world:
- AJ Capital Partners: Since 2016, he has worked as principal and senior managing director of investor relations for AJ Capital Partners, a private real estate company based in Chicago, Illinois. The company focuses on hotels and resorts, notably its in-house brand, Graduate Hotels, a collection of boutique design-driven hotels in university-anchored markets across the US.
- Fox Sports: Cooper joined the broadcast team of Fox NFL Kickoff on September 13, 2015. He hosts "The Manning Hour" on FOX NFL Sunday, conducting feature interviews and contributing additional pieces.
- Television Appearances: During the weeks leading up to Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, he hosted his own segment on The Dan Patrick Show, titled "Manning on the Street." In 2021, Cooper co-hosted the "Capital One College Bowl" alongside his brother Peyton.
Family Life
Cooper is married to Ellen Heidingsfelder, and they have three children: May, Arch, and Heid. The family resides in New Orleans.

- May: She graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart, where she also played football, and is currently studying at the University of Virginia, where her mother attended.
- Arch: Their eldest son, Arch Manning, is a quarterback for the Texas Longhorns. He was a highly touted high school prospect.
- Heid: Their youngest son plays center alongside his older brother.
Arch Manning's College Choice
Arch Manning's journey to the Texas Longhorns was highly anticipated. As the most-watched high school quarterback prospect, schools had been recruiting him for years.
According to Seth Wickersham, colleges were doing everything they could to recruit Manning, and the Manning family worked to shield Arch from the chaos of the attention, and give him enough space to fall in love with football.
He ultimately chose Texas, drawn to the program's upward trajectory, its move to the SEC, and his relationship with coach Steve Sarkisian. Manning apparently thought that Austin was a big enough city that he wouldn’t be recognized.
Cooper's Preference for Virginia
However, Cooper Manning initially favored a different path for his son. According to Wickersham, Cooper wanted Arch to commit to the University of Virginia. His reasoning was that it wasn't a football-crazy school, allowing Arch to live under the radar. His older sister, May, was a student there. As Cooper and Arch walked through campus, the father saw an opportunity for something close to peacefulness. "You could come here, be a normal guy," Cooper told him. "No one's gonna mess with you."
Arch's Decision to Stay at Texas
After his first season with the Longhorns, Arch Manning announced his intention to stay in school. Cooper Manning said that decision was made a long time ago. Cooper said, "I grew up listening to my parents talking about how great college was, I still love my years in college. Eli was there for five years, Peyton was four. It’s such a fun, special time in your life. The idea of hurrying it up and trying to get out of there seems kind of silly to me. I know how challenging that next level is. So savor every moment of college. If you're lucky enough to go to the University of Texas and hang out in Austin, Texas, where people like you and get to play football and go to these great SEC towns and compete on the highest level with your teammates and with your great friends, shoot, why would anybody want to hurry up and get out of that?"
