Jalen Green: From G League Ignite to NBA Stardom
Jalen Romande Green, born on February 9, 2002, is an American professional basketball player currently with the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Green's journey to the NBA is a testament to his talent, hard work, and the evolving landscape of professional basketball development.
Early Life and High School Career
Green was born in Merced, California, and later moved to Fresno, California, in the third grade. He began making a name for himself as a basketball player during his high school years. For his first three years of high school, Green played basketball for San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno. As a junior, Green averaged 30.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game for San Joaquin Memorial. He won his second consecutive Central Division II championship. In the title game, Green surpassed the school career scoring record of 2,288 held by Roscoe Pondexter since 1971. He also helped his team reach the CIF Northern California Division I quarterfinals. Green was named USA Today All-USA California player of the year and appeared on the All-USA second team and MaxPreps All-American second team.
For his senior season, he transferred to Prolific Prep in Napa, California. He helped his team win the Grind Session World championship. Forgoing College: A Leap to the G League Ignite
Instead of pursuing the traditional college basketball route, Green chose to join the NBA G League Ignite team for its inaugural season. In his lone season with the G League Ignite, Green averaged 17.9 PPG, 4.1 RPG and 2.8 APG while shooting 46% from the field and 36% from the three-point line.
NBA Draft and Houston Rockets (2021-2025)
On July 29, 2021, Green was selected by the Houston Rockets second overall in the 2021 NBA draft, making him the first ever player being drafted out from the G-League, followed by former Ignite teammates Jonathan Kuminga and Isaiah Todd. Many thought the Rockets would take USC big-man Evan Mobley with the 2nd overall pick but Houston took Green to pair aside with Kevin Porter Jr.

The Rockets lost 20 games in a row shortly after trading all-star James Harden, who had been the franchise centerpiece for eight seasons. He quickly showcased his scoring ability and athleticism, providing glimpses of his immense potential. On February 19, 2022, Green participated in the Slam Dunk Contest, finishing in third place. On January 15, 2023, the NBA suspended Green along with teammate Jae'Sean Tate for one game without pay for leaving the bench area during an altercation between the Rockets and the Sacramento Kings two days earlier.
Scoring Prowess and Milestones
Green demonstrated his scoring prowess throughout his time with the Rockets. On January 18, 2023, Green tied a then-career high of 41 points with seven assists and five rebounds in a 121-117 loss against the Charlotte Hornets. On January 23, he surpassed his career high with 42 points along with four rebounds and four assists in a 119-114 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He became the only sixth player at 20 or younger to have recorded at least three 40-point games. On February 8, Green scored 41 points along with two assists and rebounds, securing his fourth game of 40 or more points before turning 21, tied for the third most in NBA history.

On January 13, 2025, Green matched his career high with 42 points on 72.2% shooting from the field in a home game win against the Memphis Grizzlies. In Game 2 of the Rockets' first-round playoff series against the Golden State Warriors, Green scored 38 points, leading the Rockets to a 109-94 victory. He tied the Rockets franchise record for most three-pointers made in a playoff game with eight, matching performances by Chris Paul.
Green took a small step back last season, partially due to the addition of Fred VanVleet and the emergence of Alperen Sengun. However, the third-year pro was still second on the team in points (19.6) and third in assists (3.5) per game. On July 6, 2025, Green was traded to the Phoenix Suns as part of a seven-team deal. Green was acquired in the offseason trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets. He made his debut with the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, Nov. 6, and what a debut it was. He scored 29 points, leading the team in its 115-102 win over the Los Angeles Clippers at Mortgage Matchup Center. He missed the team's first eight games of the season with a hamstring injury, but is a potent scorer who will continue to start alongside Devin Booker to make for a formidable backcourt.
International Career
Green represents the United States internationally but has also shown interest in playing for the Philippines in the future due to his partial Filipino background. He made his national team debut for the United States at the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship in Formosa, Argentina. In five games, he averaged 9.8 points, two rebounds, and one steal per game, helping his team win the gold medal. He was named MVP of the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup in Argentina after averaging a team-high 15.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game and winning the gold medal. Green won another gold medal with the United States at the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Heraklion, Greece.
