Technoblade: From College Dropout to Minecraft Legend
Alexander, known to millions as Technoblade, was an American YouTuber who captivated audiences with his Minecraft videos, livestreams, and participation in the Dream SMP. Born on June 1, 1999, in San Francisco, California, he launched his YouTube channel in 2013 at the age of 14, marking the beginning of his journey to becoming a prominent figure in the Minecraft community. While Technoblade's life was tragically cut short by cancer in June 2022, his impact on the gaming world remains undeniable.
Early Years and Rise to Minecraft Fame
Technoblade's YouTube channel quickly became a hub for Minecraft enthusiasts. He recorded himself playing a variety of games online with other people and posted them on his channel. While he occasionally played other games, Minecraft, an imagination-building game, was the main game that he played. He knew just about everything about fighting in the game, which was important because players can attack other players and losing a battle would mean losing your experience and possessions to the winning player.
Technoblade's rise to popularity accelerated in 2019, fueled by multiple victories in Keemstar's "Minecraft Monday" tournaments, where he triumphed over numerous prominent content creators. He also regularly participated in the MC Championships (MCC) tournaments with other YouTubers and won two of them. His exceptional Minecraft skills were undeniable, but it was his sense of humor and engaging personality that truly resonated with viewers. He loved to challenge himself by making the game harder for entertainment purposes. One time, he beat Minecraft with a gaming steering wheel. This was difficult because the controls are all different and Minecraft is a hard game to beat. This made a very entertaining and funny video, showing why he was one of the more popular gaming YouTubers of his time.
The College Years: A Brief Interlude
In August 2018, Technoblade embarked on a new chapter, enrolling in college as an English major. According to Technoblade, he attended college as an English major. He barely had time to play video games and received a 4.0 GPA in his second semester. However, his motivation was anything but healthy. He documented his experiences in a video titled "im going to college AHHHHHHHHHHHHH". However, the demands of higher education soon clashed with his burgeoning YouTube career.
Dropping Out: A Calculated Decision
After a relatively short period, Technoblade made the pivotal decision to drop out of college in 2018 to pursue his passion for Minecraft full-time. He was able to support himself by being a popular channel on Youtube, with lots of views and subscribers. The more subscribers he had the more money he earned. He explained his reasoning in a video titled "i dropped out of college to play minecraft lol". When Technoblade crunched the numbers, which factored in his subscriber growth and income, his calculations demonstrated that an English degree wouldn't pull in as much cash as YouTube. And so, he concluded that playing "Minecraft" and posting his videos on YouTube was the "safer" option.

This decision, while unconventional, proved to be a turning point in his career. It allowed him to fully dedicate himself to creating content and engaging with his audience.
Maintaining Privacy and Personal Life
Like many other Youtubers, not much is known about his personal life. Throughout his career, Technoblade avoided personal inquiries and interviews to maintain his and his family's privacy, although he occasionally discussed his personal life in his videos. His family continued to decline interviews after his death. During a 2016 Q&A, one fan asked how Technoblade's parents reacted to his YouTube career - a pertinent question, since some guardians dislike the idea of playing video games for a living. According to the video, his parents were too preoccupied at the time to respond to his decision since they were going through a divorce. However, he did joke that they were "legally obliged to be competitively supportive." But his answer raised another question: Who was he living with? While playing "Minecraft" one day, Technoblade paused the game and muted his microphone on Discord. Unfortunately, he forgot to do the same on the stream, allowing audiences to hear what seemed to be a conversation with his dad. This seemed to reveal that Technoblade lived with his father at the time. During a later stream, Technoblade and his friends discussed the green screen studio he used for his 100,000 follower plaque reveal. One person asked why he had a green screen that he used for only one video. Technoblade explained that his father owns a movie studio and he'd offered to let him use it in the past. Every now and then, Technoblade mentioned his ADHD to fans, providing blurbs on how ADHD can affect the thought process. While Technoblade typically didn't openly discuss his ADHD, odds are audiences got to see it in action. For example, during the fourth round of his legendary fight against Dream, Technoblade seemingly forgot about his opponent as he sheared the ground for 10 seconds. The streamer attributed this to ADHD, stating that he wanted to raise his shield but was distracted by what his character did instead.
Technoblade's Legacy and Impact
In July 2021, Technoblade's right arm started to hurt. He thought it was a repetitive strain injury (a reasonable assumption because many gamers suffer from it), but rest didn't help. In fact, his right shoulder swelled up, so Technoblade assumed he had broken a bone. However, doctors told him that the news was even worse: He had cancer. While Technoblade initially went on chemo and radiation therapy to treat the cancer, it didn't really work. As a latch-ditch effort before surgery, doctors tried to suffocate the tumor by cutting off its blood supply. At first that strategy seemed to work, but then the dying cancer cells ballooned to a dangerous degree, which forced Technoblade's doctors to schedule an emergency amputation. However, the surgeons had one final trick up their sleeves: While they could completely sever Technoblade's arm, they also could try a limb salvage operation that cut out the tumor and the surrounding muscle and bone. On June 30, 2022, Technoblade's father posted a video to his main channel to tell fans the horrible news: Technoblade had passed away. In his final hours, Technoblade wrote down a message thanking his fans for their support over the years, particularly following his cancer diagnosis.
Technoblade's family likewise thanked fans and asked for privacy in their time of grief, and this was met with an outpouring of love from the gaming community. Major streamers like Pokimane and Ludwig sent their best wishes to Technoblade's family and shared their appreciation for his content. A few days after Technoblade passed, the launcher for "Minecraft: Java Edition" was updated to include a crown on the head of the pig on the left side of the screen. Fans immediately recognized this as a shoutout to Technoblade's avatar, and rejoiced at the sight of this in-game tribute.
His unique blend of skill, humor, and strategic gameplay captivated millions, solidifying his place as a Minecraft icon. He rose in popularity in 2019, following multiple wins in Keemstar's "Minecraft Monday" tournaments, in which he defeated multiple prominent content creators in combat. Technoblade became a member of the Dream SMP in 2020, a Minecraft server hosted by the YouTuber Dream, which features numerous popular Minecraft YouTubers.

Even after his passing, Technoblade's impact continues to be felt. On October 18, 2022, Dream hosted a livestream, featuring Technoblade's father, where the two told anecdotes about Technoblade. On October 28, 2022, nine years after the creation of the Technoblade YouTube channel, YouTube uploaded an eight-minute video to its official channel, commemorating Technoblade's ninth anniversary entitled "Technoblade Never Dies". On June 30, 2024, two years after Technoblade's death was announced, a new video edited by TommyInnit was uploaded to the Technoblade YouTube channel with a spoken explanation from TommyInnit:Two years ago, I recorded a video with Technoblade where one hundred Minecraft YouTubers came together to survive some natural disasters and fight to the death. A few months ago, I realized I didn't actually use much of [his] footage in my video, and after taking a long, long time to track his recording down … I found out it was actually really entertaining. So I've put together what I think would live up … to a Technoblade video in Alex's standards. The video was a montage of previously unused footage from Technoblade's perspective of the Minecraft world's natural disasters.
Tributes and Remembrance
The Minecraft community and beyond mourned the loss of Technoblade, with tributes pouring in from fellow content creators, fans, and organizations. YouTubers, such as Dream and other members of the Dream SMP expressed their condolences, support, and admiration for him online. Simon Collins-Laflamme, the co-founder of Hypixel, and business magnate Elon Musk expressed similar feelings.
Mojang, the developers of Minecraft, added a tribute to Technoblade in the "Minecraft: Java Edition" launcher, adorning the pig with a crown, a nod to Technoblade's avatar. A few days after Technoblade passed, the launcher for "Minecraft: Java Edition" was updated to include a crown on the head of the pig on the left side of the screen. Fans immediately recognized this as a shoutout to Technoblade's avatar, and rejoiced at the sight of this in-game tribute. While this tribute was later removed, its initial appearance served as a powerful symbol of respect and remembrance.
