Liam Starnes: From Scholastic Bowl Champion to Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions
Liam Starnes, a 20-year-old University of Chicago student, has captivated audiences with his impressive run on "Jeopardy!". This Barrington High School alumnus showcased his trivia prowess, securing a spot in the prestigious Tournament of Champions. His journey reflects years of dedication to academic competition and a lifelong passion for learning.
A Winning Streak on Jeopardy!
Starnes' appearance on "Jeopardy!" was a dream come true. He secured his place in the Tournament of Champions after winning five consecutive games. His sixth win further solidified his reputation as a formidable player. The episodes, filmed in March, saw Starnes beating out his competition with a combination of knowledge and strategic gameplay. While he remained tight-lipped about further winnings, his initial success earned him $123,000 in prize money and a chance to compete for $250,000 in the Tournament of Champions.
From Scholastic Bowl to the Jeopardy! Stage
Starnes' journey to "Jeopardy!" began long before his appearance on the show. He credits his years of participation in scholastic bowl, starting in sixth grade, as crucial preparation. He continued to compete throughout high school at Barrington High School and later at the University of Chicago. A cherished accomplishment was leading his high school team to victory in the 2021 Scholastic Bowl National Championship Tournament as team captain. He auditioned, taking a teen test, then a college test, then a regular test to get on "Jeopardy!" before finally getting the call in 2023 to be on the show.
The Audition Process and Preparation
The path to "Jeopardy!" wasn't easy. Starnes described a rigorous audition process involving multiple tests, including a teen test, a college test, and a regular test. After auditioning, Starnes waited 18 months before learning he had been selected. When he finally received the call in 2023, he initially thought it might be a scam. "Producers told me, 'How would you like to fly out to Los Angeles?' And that was a great feeling," Starnes said.
To prepare for the show, Starnes employed a traditional approach, studying old questions and watching previous episodes. He identified sports as his strongest subject, while pop culture proved more challenging.

The Jeopardy! Experience
Starnes described his time on "Jeopardy!" as a dream come true. He particularly enjoyed meeting host Ken Jennings. Reflecting on his initial games, Starnes said, "At first, I definitely just focused on enjoying the moment and having fun. Obviously, I wanted to win, but I was feeling really nervous and told myself, ‘No matter what, just have fun and see what happens.’ Then as I kept winning, all of a sudden, it was like, ‘I can do this." After nailing a big wager on a Daily Double, Starnes got one of his “best categories” in Final Jeopardy with Presidential Elections, giving him his first win.
The End of the Streak
Despite dominating the first half of Monday’s game, Starnes lost the episode in Final Jeopardy after answering incorrectly. Unfortunately for Starnes, his impressive run came to an end when he couldn’t figure out the Final Jeopardy clue. He explained, “Despite fighting fatigue, I won game 6 in a runaway and returned to the hotel with my winning streak still intact.
Life After Jeopardy! and Future Aspirations
Starnes, a senior studying biostatistics, returned to the University of Chicago after his "Jeopardy!" experience. After he graduates in June, he would like to work as a researcher and use some of his winning to travel. He hopes his journey to "Jeopardy!" can be an inspiration.
A Fanbase and Recognition
Starnes' success on "Jeopardy!" garnered him considerable attention. He noted the surprise of being recognized in public, stating, "I was not expecting to get this much attention. It seems like almost every day somebody recognizes me and says, ‘Hey, were you on Jeopardy!?’ I was not expecting to be that famous…."
