McNeese State University: A Comprehensive Overview

McNeese State University, a public university located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, has a rich history and a vibrant present. Founded in 1939, McNeese has evolved from a junior college to a comprehensive university offering a wide array of academic programs and a strong sense of community.

Historical Development

McNeese State University's journey began in 1939 as Lake Charles Junior College, a division of Louisiana State University. The institution initially offered only the first two years of higher education. The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, the parish governing board, donated an 86-acre (35 ha) tract of land for the campus, which originally consisted of two buildings: the former Administration Building (Kaufman Hall) and the McNeese Arena (Ralph O. Ward Memorial Gym). In 1940, the auditorium, now Francis G. Bulber Auditorium, was completed as the third building. These three buildings are still in use today, standing as a testament to the university's enduring legacy.

In 1950, a pivotal moment arrived when the college became an autonomous four-year institution, renamed McNeese State College. State Senator Gilbert Franklin Hennigan played a crucial role in advancing the bill that separated McNeese from Louisiana State University, transferring its administration to the Louisiana State Board of Education. The institution continued to expand its academic offerings, and in 1960, legislators authorized McNeese to offer curricula leading to the master's degree. By 1966, the degree of Educational Specialist was first offered. In 1970, the institution achieved university status and adopted its current name, McNeese State University.

Campus Environment and Facilities

McNeese State University boasts a sprawling campus comprising 79 buildings spread across approximately 1,560 acres. The main campus, covering 121 acres, is adorned with live oak trees and azaleas, creating a picturesque setting for its approximately 51 buildings. Among these are the three original structures: Kaufman Hall, Ralph O. Ward Memorial Gym (the Arena), and Francis G. Bulber Auditorium.

Bulber Auditorium, a striking example of Art Deco architecture, holds a distinguished place on the National Register of Historic Places. The newest addition to the campus is the 145,000 square foot Townsley Law Arena, which houses the academic classes, faculty offices, and training facilities for the Department of Health and Human Performance (effective June 1, 2024, the department will be renamed as the H.C. Drew School of Kinesiology), in addition to being home to the men's and women's basketball and volleyball programs. The basketball arena features the Joe Dumars Court, named in honor of McNeese's most accomplished basketball player. Jack V. Doland Field House is named after a former McNeese head football coach, athletic director and university president.

The campus also features four significant sculptures, including "An Honest Day's Work" by sculptor Fred Fellows located at Entrance Plaza, a commemorative statue of John McNeese by sculptor Janie Stine LaCroix located near Smith Hall, "The Cowboy" created by legendary western painter and sculptor Buck McCain located inside Jack V. Doland Field House, and another unnamed sculpture at the front of the library. The College of Nursing and Health Professions is housed in the Juliet Hardtner Hall, named for a McNeese donor and daughter of the Louisiana timber magnate and conservationist, Henry E. Hardtner of La Salle Parish.

McNeese also houses the Southwest Louisiana Chamber of Commerce in the Southwest Louisiana Entrepreneurial and Economic (SEED) Center. One of McNeese’s most unique offerings is the Center for Advancement of Meat Processing and Production and three working farms with over 1,200 acres of property used for research, farming, and ranching for its agriculture and related sciences programs.

Academics and Faculty

McNeese State University is part of the University of Louisiana System and is classified as a Master's University. The university consists of six colleges and the Doré School of Graduate Studies, offering a diverse range of academic programs. Fifteen members of faculty have received Fulbright Awards. Faculty members in the Departments of Engineering, Performing Arts, Social Sciences and English and Foreign Languages have taught in Rwanda, Romania, Greece, Korea, and Wales, among other countries.

The Engineering departments housed in the College of Science, Engineering, and Math offers a multi-discipline curriculum to all students with majors in chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. That is, students in these individual disciplines are taught by faculty of other disciplines in certain classes. In addition to the degree of Bachelor of Science in engineering, the departments also offer the Master of Engineering degree in chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering and engineering management. The college is closely linked to the nearby petrochemical industries and refineries through the Industrial Advisory Board and Lake Area Industry Alliance/McNeese Engineering Partnership. The Institute for Industry-Education Collaboration is a continuing education program that offers a wide range of in-person and online professional development programs.

McNeese has such a broad spectrum of academics to appeal to everyone. McNeese offers a broad spectrum of courses, appealing to many different types of students. Realizing that there are indeed, many different types of students, most professors are more than willing to help students in any way. The professors are also very knowledgeable, most of them with numerous degrees in numerous fields. Mcneese University has a broad variety of courses and majors available to students. The professors are very caring and they try their hardest to help students learn as much as possible. They also welcome students on their office hours to ask any questions they may have about a test grade or assignments. From personal experience, the professors at McNeese are more willing to take extra time with their students and more available for questions and concerns. It helps when you are studying for a big test and your professor has set up a study session or a class forum, which the professors often do.

McNeese is one of the only schools in the nation with a business school accredited by the AACSB of Business International. McNeese State University will host author Rae Cline for a fiction reading on Friday, Oct. in the Stokes Auditorium, located in Hardtner Hall. This event is sponsored by the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in creative writing and a Juliet Hardtner Endowed Professorship.

Athletics and Student Life

McNeese's colors are blue and gold. The men's sports teams are known as the Cowboys, while the women's athletic teams are the Cowgirls. The football team plays at Louis Bonnette Field at Cowboy Stadium, which seats 17,000 fans. It is also known as "The Hole" or lately as "the lil' House" and is located near campus. The team played in the inaugural Independence Bowl game in 1976, a 20-16 victory over Tulsa. They went on to make two more appearances in 1979 and 1980.

The Cowboys basketball and volleyball teams both moved into the venue now known as The Legacy Center in 2018. This gave the basketball teams their first on-campus facility since leaving the Ralph O. Ward arena. In 1956, the Cowboys won the NAIA Division I Men's Tournament. It was the only appearance the Cowboys made in the NAIA tournament. McNeese State defeated Texas Southern 60 to 55. The men's basketball team has made four appearances in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, most recently in 2025, and the team has qualified for the National Invitation Tournament three times, the most recent invitation being in 2011. The women's basketball team earned its invitation to the "Big Dance" in 2011, by sweeping the Southland Conference Tournament. The baseball team plays games at Cowboy Diamond. The McNeese Cowgirls soccer team plays their games at Cowgirl Field.

McNeese has a phenomenal greek life and on campus activities. McNeese is a smaller campus and it is easy to get to a student's class. McNeese State University is everything I thought it would be. The professors and classes are amazing. I feel at home here because it is very personable. McNeese State University is a wonderful and affordable school for anyone searching to further their education. It really is excellence with a personal touch. The school has much to offer for students that are planning to enroll.

The McNeese State University newspaper is The Contraband, a weekly publication which has existed since 1939. The university's student yearbook is The Log. Students Elyse Duhon, a management senior, and Nathan Blanchard, a biological science senior, both from Moss Bluff, have been named as McNeese State University’s 2025 Homecoming Queen and King. The royal pair and court will be presented during halftime ceremonies of the McNeese Cowboys vs. the Houston Christian Huskies football game on Saturday, Oct.

Location and Accessibility

McNeese State University is located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in the southwestern part of the state. The university is close to downtown Lake Charles so there will be some urban amenities nearby, but as it's not in a huge city like Los Angeles or New York, you can expect a blend of urban and suburban atmospheres. Reputation and Recognition

McNeese has a great reputation by attending McNeese. McNeese State University was established by the Louisiana Legislature in 1938 and opened its doors for its first fall session on September 11, 1939, with 140 students and just three buildings. The institution was first named the Lake Charles Junior College and was a division of Louisiana State University. The following fall, the school changed its name to John McNeese Junior College to honor John McNeese, a renowned Southwest Louisiana educator and the first superintendent of schools in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. In 1950, McNeese became a four-year college in its own right and came under the authority of the Louisiana Board of Education and would receive accreditation in 1954 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
