Directions to Campus

From points south: Head north on I-79 North to I-90 East.
From points east: Head west on I-90 West.
From points west: Head east on I-90 East.
From Exit 27 (State Street exit) to campus: Take Route 97 north for one mile to junction of Route 505. Veer right and continue on Route 97 north (Old French Road) to East 38th Street.
From Erie International Airport: Head east on Route 5 (West 12th Street) to State Street. Turn right (south) on State Street and continue to East 38th Street.
From Mercyhurst University: Exit through the front gates and turn left on East 38th Street. Move into the right lane and continue for one block. Turn right on Wallace Street. Continue four blocks and turn right on East 34th Street.

The university also maintains an academic center in Dungarvan, Ireland.

Academic Programs and Curriculum

Mercyhurst University offers a diverse range of academic programs, including more than 60 undergraduate majors, nine graduate programs, and various post-baccalaureate and advanced certificates. Additionally, Mercyhurst provides certificate and associate degree offerings at branch campuses in North East, Corry, and the Booker T. Washington Center.

The REACH Curriculum

To achieve its school-wide goals, the REACH Curriculum acts as a foundational core that supplements every major. These courses foster curiosity and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration across departments. The REACH Curriculum consists of 10 courses in 10 different disciplines, concluding with an ethics-based capstone course. Sometime after students’ freshman year, they participate in at least one single-credit experience in service learning or civic engagement.

Study Abroad Programs

In the recent past, 75% of students have chosen to take a single intensive course or study abroad through Mercyhurst’s flexible scheduling. Among the most popular study abroad programs are the Faculty-Student Academic Travel (FSAT) opportunities, which have taken students and professors to study narrative and film in Spain; aquatic ecology in Belize; video storytelling in Peru; and dance appreciation in France and Israel.

Faculty and Research

Students have access to more than 165 faculty members who are eager to share years of invaluable training and field experience. In many cases, they work side-by-side with students on exciting research projects. Not only does Mercyhurst employ some of the nation’s brightest academic minds, but professors are also approachable and dependable.

Chemistry students begin research projects as freshmen, design one individualized course of lab experiments, collect data, and analyze their results. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) selected Mercyhurst and public health majors to research the waste management of toxins. The Sports Medicine Department at Mercyhurst requires students to conduct a two-year research project. Students work closely with faculty to conduct real-life public opinion polling through the Mercyhurst Center for Applied Politics state-of-the art computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) facility. The applied forensics program is one of the only programs in the country that allows students to work with real evidence and human remains.

Transition to College

Mercyhurst primes its students with an introduction to academic writing and thought as well as to the college lifestyle. COMP120 (Writing and Research), along with two one-credit courses (iMU10: Introduction to Mercyhurst and iMU102: Involvement at Mercyhurst), help ease the transition from high school to college.

Student Life and Community Engagement

Campus life is thriving with year-round events and active student activities. For example, the annual SpringFest brings such artists to campus as T-Pain, Reel Big Fish, MKTO, Plain White T’s, Andy Grammer, Daya, and Cassio Monroe. And Hurst Dat, a fairly new annual tradition in the fall, is jam-packed with games, contests, live entertainment, good food, and Mercyhurst spirit. With more than 80 student clubs and organizations available for students, there is something for everyone. And if there’s not, students have the freedom to create a club around their interests. Mercyhurst’s performing arts programs-including dance. Students may audition for the Mercyhurst Theatre Program and the D’Angelo Opera Theater, where there are several theatrical and musical performances each year.

Currently, there are 1,700 full-time undergraduate students living in three freshman-designated residence halls. The newest residence hall is Warde Hall, built in 2009.

Mercyhurst has been honored with distinction for its university-wide commitment to community service, providing a platform that enables students to log more than 40,000 hours of community service each year.

Outcomes and Achievements

Graduating on time is the best way to avoid any unnecessary tuition costs in one’s college education, so Mercyhurst makes earning a degree within four years a priority. In fact, the university’s four-year graduation rate is the highest in Erie County and one of the highest in the region. More than 20 programs of study on campus have reported a 100% placement rate in a job or graduate school. 85% of pre-professional students have even been accepted into health professional programs, including prestigious medical and dental schools. Mercyhurst helps students reach their academic goals without incurring significant financial burden.

100% of students have the opportunity for hands-on experience in their field of study via internships, work studies, contracted services, service work, group projects, and/or the Senior Capstone Project.

History and Development

On September 20, 1926, Mercyhurst College opened its doors just a few blocks away from the city's southern boundary. It was founded by the Sisters of Mercy of the Diocese of Erie, who were led by Borgia Egan, who became the first president of Mercyhurst College. In 1963, the college prep department separated to form Mercyhurst Preparatory School, which is located behind the university.

On February 3, 1969, the board of trustees voted to make Mercyhurst a coed college. From its foundation in 1926 until 1972, members of the Sisters of Mercy had been presidents of the college. After 1972, lay presidents led the college.

Among its five campuses, enrollment has grown to over 4,000 students instructed by 168 faculty. The Mary D'Angelo Performing Arts Center opened in February 1996. In August 2005, the $5 million Michele and Tom Ridge Health and Safety Building was dedicated at Mercyhurst North East. Also in 2005, the board of trustees authorized the purchase of 400 acres (1.6 km2) in Girard as the first step towards developing Mercyhurst West, a two-year college serving western Erie County, northwestern Crawford County and northeastern Ohio.

The board of trustees elected Thomas J. Gamble as the 11th president of Mercyhurst College. The construction of a $14 million freshman residence hall began in fall 2008, and the hall opened in the fall of 2009. The main entrance gate on E 38th St. Opened in September 2012 is the Center for Academic Engagement, a four-story, 31,000-square-foot (2,900 m2) building that will be set into the rolling hill north of Hammermill Library and feature a skywalk over East Main Drive to connect the two facilities.

The Board of Trustees of Mercyhurst University appointed Michael T. Victor as the 12th president of Mercyhurst University on May 19, 2015. Victor had served as president of Lake Erie College since 2006. Victor served as dean of the Walker School of Business at Mercyhurst from 2002 to 2006. On August 16, 2018, Mercyhurst University opened a $25 million residence hall.

Former Branch Campuses

The university formerly had a branch campus located 18 miles (29 km) away in North East, Pennsylvania at the site of the former St. The university's fifth campus, Mercyhurst West, was located in Girard, Pennsylvania, at the site of the former Faith Lutheran Church.

Calendar Changes

The university formerly was on a trimester calendar and moved to a 4-1-4 calendar for the 2013-2014 school year.

Athletics

Mercyhurst University competes in the Northeast Conference for most of their D1 sports since the 2024/2025 season. Men's and women's ice hockey compete in Atlantic Hockey America and water polo competes in the Collegiate Water Polo Association.
