Wilson Plaza: A Hub of History, Community, and Expression at UCLA

Wilson Plaza at UCLA stands as a vibrant crossroads where history, community, and diverse expressions converge. From momentous speeches by civil rights leaders to spirited cultural celebrations and student activism, this central space has borne witness to pivotal moments in the university's story and continues to serve as a focal point for campus life.

A Site of Historical Significance

Wilson Plaza holds a distinguished place in UCLA's history, most notably as the location where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his powerful "Segregation Must Die" speech on April 27, 1965. Addressing nearly 5,000 students and faculty members, Dr. King spoke about the urgency of the civil rights movement, offered hope for a future of equality, and encouraged students to participate in the Summer Community Organization and Political Education (SCOPE) project, which supported voter registration efforts in African American communities in the South. The speech deeply resonated with the audience, inspiring more than 20 UCLA students and faculty to join the SCOPE project. UCLA's history professors collected $700 to help fund the project.

A Welcoming Space for Community

Beyond its historical significance, Wilson Plaza serves as a vital gathering place for the UCLA community. It is the site of various events that foster connection, celebrate diversity, and promote a sense of belonging.

Latinx Welcome

Every fall quarter, Wilson Plaza comes alive with the vibrant energy of the Latinx Success Center Welcome, also known as the bienvenida. This beloved event brings together new and continuing Bruins, staff, faculty, and alumni to celebrate Latinx culture and build community. The celebration features music, dance, food, and informational booths from various campus organizations.

The event includes a live dance performance by the Afro-Latinx Connection de UCLA, a student-run organization that bridges the gap between African diaspora and Latino communities. Grupo Folklórico de UCLA student leaders warmly reach out to newcomers, encouraging them to join their dance practices, sharing that the group exists to help students find friendship and a sense of home within such a large university.

The Latinx Success Center, a campus hub that offers advising and educational services, as well as leadership and mentorship programs, is introduced as a place “for you, by you,” where students can grow academically and personally.

The annual Latinx Welcome serves as a safe space, especially given the influx of ICE raids and rampant discrimination against Latine people. The event fosters an inclusive space, open for all students, staff, and alumni to embrace their heritage.

True Bruin Welcome Week

Wilson Plaza is also a central location for True Bruin Welcome Week, a series of events designed to introduce new students to campus life and resources. These events include open houses, mixers, and informational sessions hosted by various departments and organizations.

During True Bruin Welcome Week (zero week), the Interfraternity Council (IFC) coordinates a more formal recruitment week. Students interested in joining a fraternity have an opportunity to preview each organization. Chapters offer most of their bids, or invitations to join by the end of their recruitment events. Some chapters continue to have independent recruitment events and offer invitations to join their chapters throughout the fall quarter.

Each fall quarter during True Bruin Welcome Week (zero week), the Asian Greek Council (AGC) coordinates a "Rush Week" where students who are interested in joining a fraternity or sorority have an opportunity to preview each organization. Chapters offer bids, or invitations to join at the end of "Rush Week". AGC chapters recruit new members in fall and may recruit in spring quarter. Recruitment events are hosted by each chapter during the evenings and the weekend during True Bruin Welcome. Registration is not required.

Throughout the year, Wilson Plaza hosts a variety of other events, including:

The Westwood Village Block Party, welcoming first-year freshmen and transfer students with hands-on art activities, games, live music, and performances.
Bruin Bash, a welcome-back concert and festival.
Blood drives, where all blood collected goes directly to UCLA patients.
Getting-to-know-you events connecting new students to the Physical Sciences community.
Events to celebrate the upcoming Athletic season.
The UCLA Immunization Requirement Fair.
An open house for the Undergraduate Research Centers.
The UCLA LGBTQ Campus Resource Center's anniversary celebration and welcome event.

A Platform for Expression and Activism

In addition to its role as a gathering place for community events, Wilson Plaza has also served as a platform for student expression and activism.

Occupy UCLA

In the past, Wilson Plaza has been the site of protests and demonstrations, such as the Occupy UCLA movement. Students camped overnight in the plaza to protest budget cuts and advocate for free education.

Demonstrations

Wilson Plaza is a space where students can express their opinions and advocate for change. However, demonstrations cannot be “in areas that already have a scheduled Organized/Major Event.”
