Navigating Women in Defense Scholarships: Eligibility and Opportunities

The Women in Defense (WID) scholarship programs are designed to encourage women to pursue careers related to the national security and defense sectors, while also providing development opportunities to women already working in these fields. These scholarships represent an exciting first step for many young women to begin careers not just in STEM fields, but specifically within the defense sector. Fundraising events and donations from corporations, Women In Defense Chapters, and individuals make it possible to provide WID scholarships.

Women in Defense Michigan established the WID Michigan Scholarship Program in 2009. The scholarships aim to bolster the representation of women in national security and defense. The scholarships support women pursuing education and careers contributing to the defense and national security interests of the United States.

All applicants must meet specific criteria to be eligible for WID scholarships. While specific requirements may vary slightly between different WID chapters and scholarship programs, some common eligibility factors include:

Enrollment Status: Applicants must be currently enrolled or expected to be enrolled in an accredited university or college by a specified academic term (e.g., the fall of 2025 academic term).

For example, the Chapter's regional scholarship is a scholarship offered to applicants that apply to the annual National WID Scholar Program and attend school in the New England area. The Chapter's Regional Scholarship is made possible with generous support from NDIA New England, as well as individual and corporate donors. In late spring, the Chapter scholarship committee reviews WID Scholar applicants from our area and selects eligible applicants by mid-summer for follow on scholarship awards.

Obligations of Awardees

Recipients of WID scholarships often have certain obligations:

Reporting: Recipients must report periodically on the impact of the awards on their personal and professional lives.
Engagement: Awardees must show the impact their WID Scholarships have had on their lives. They may be asked to speak about their scholarships and their impact at WID and NDIA events. They may be asked to write a short paragraph or two about their scholarships and their impact for WID publications.
Agreement to Requirements: Awardees must agree to specific requirements outlined by the WID chapter or scholarship program.

Recipients of past awards may apply for future scholarships.
Awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, or religion.
Women In Defense reserves the right to revise, suspend, or discontinue this program without notice.
