Empowering Future Leaders: Scholarship Opportunities for Women
Introduction
Scholarship opportunities play a pivotal role in fostering women's leadership across various fields. They not only provide financial assistance but also acknowledge and encourage the potential of women to become impactful leaders. These scholarships are designed to break down barriers, promote equity, and support the educational and career aspirations of women from diverse backgrounds.
The Women’s Transformational Leadership Grant
The Women’s Transformational Leadership Grant (“Scholarship”) annually awards renewable $5,000 scholarships to students who demonstrate leadership potential and will enroll full-time as undergraduate students. This scholarship program, as a component fund of the St. Louis Community Foundation, aims to support Black, Hispanic, or Native American female undergraduate students with financial need. Eligibility, financial need, and award amount for this scholarship program will be determined by the St. Louis Community Foundation.
Eligibility Criteria and Application Process
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet specific criteria, including being a Black, Hispanic, or Native American female student. Recipients MUST attend a PUBLIC four-year college or university. The application process requires careful attention to detail. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

- A Scholarship Central General Application, including the FALL transcript for the current academic year, showing the applicant's name, school, grades, and cumulative GPA. If a previous transcript was uploaded, a new transcript must be uploaded to the General Application, and the answer to the GPA question updated. If the college choice has changed, it should be updated on the General Application as well.
- If the applicant is in college and has completed fewer than 24 credits, a high school transcript must be uploaded.
Required Information and Documents
Applicants are required to provide comprehensive information about their background, experiences, and financial situation. This includes:
- A list of any extracurricular school activities or family responsibilities, including the activity, the time involved, dates of involvement, and position(s) held.
- A list of any work experience, including company name, dates of employment, hours worked per week, and position(s) held.
- A list of any volunteer/community activities, including the activity, the time involved, dates of involvement, and position(s) held.
- An essay (500 words or less) explaining why the applicant chose their field of study and what their plans are upon completing their degree, sharing their goals and vision for their career, and explaining how they will use their education to make a difference and impact others.
- An explanation of what their heritage means to them.
- A FAFSA Submission Summary for next year, including the Student Aid Index.
- Next year's Financial Aid Award Letter from the college the applicant will attend, including the college name, applicant name, loans, grants, and scholarships offered.
- Documentation from the school the applicant plans to attend that shows the total cost of attendance.
- Information on where the applicant will live during the academic year for which they are applying.
- The names of any siblings, their age(s), and what school(s) they are attending (if any).
- Any unusual financial circumstances, including costs associated with the applicant's education or educational loans already incurred for or by them.
Applicants must upload the Financial Aid Award Letter from the college they plan to attend, including the college name, their name, loans, grants, and scholarships offered.
By providing their full name as a signature, applicants certify that the information they have provided is true and accurate to the best of their knowledge and authorize the St. Louis Community Foundation and its agents to examine, verify and discuss their academic records and other information that applies to the consideration of this application. Their signature also signifies that, if awarded, they understand that it is their responsibility to inform the St. Louis Community Foundation of any changes to their enrollment status.
Renewal and Notification
Recipients may reapply for award consideration for a maximum of four years of undergraduate funding, provided they continue to make satisfactory progress toward a degree and continue to meet the eligibility criteria. Application status will change from submitted to offered or denied in June. Questions can be directed to Ellen Vietor, Scholarship Manager at the St. Louis Community Foundation.
ASA Women in Leadership Scholarship Program
The ASA Women in Leadership Scholarship Program aims to raise the visibility of women in the staffing industry as well as provide scholarships that cover registration fees for two events. ASA will award scholarships to rising stars who are committed to a career in staffing and have shown career growth potential.

Benefits of the Scholarship
Scholarship winners receive free registration for THRIVE Live and for Staffing World, which includes hotel accommodations for the duration of both events, $400 toward the cost of airfare, and money for incidentals. This year, THRIVE Live takes place Oct. 5-6 and Staffing World takes place Oct. 6-8, both in Orlando, FL.
Standing Out Among Applicants
Standing out among more than 100 ASA Women in Leadership Scholarship applicants requires showcasing unique strengths and accomplishments. Applicants might opt to ask their chief executive officer, branch manager, or supervisor to write a letter of recommendation for them. Make sure that the individual writing the letter can speak to your goals and successes with specific examples. Companies with a scholarship winner receive public relations support from ASA staff and increased visibility for their company on social media.
Addressing Gender Disparities
Research shows that women are more likely to downplay their achievements and are less likely to be recognized for their contributions. This scholarship is an effort to acknowledge the talented rising stars in the staffing, recruiting, and workforce solutions industry.
The Broader Context of Women in Leadership
Former CCSWG Commissioner Hannah-Beth Jackson famously once said that “Women’s paychecks should reflect their true value and contributions…” While this is true, it is also just the starting place. The very concept of building a pipeline into public service is one that is designed to constrain and narrow our collective vision of how many women can and should, be in leadership roles at any one time. There is currently no shortage of young women who are qualified for public service roles. Ruth Bader Ginsberg famously said in answer to the question “When will there be enough women on the Supreme Court? This scholarship is but one tiny step of many that are needed, but the more we can collaborate to remove barriers to entry for young women seeking to enter the field, the better. We can’t expect that generations of keeping women out will end by scouring existing networks for one or two women at a time to let in the door. We need to change the structure of public service to become wholly equitable.
