Cengage: Shaping Education Through Innovation and Digital Solutions

Cengage Group is an American educational content, technology, and services company committed to connecting education to employment. With a reach of nearly 16 million digital users across various markets, including Higher Education, School, Work, and English Language Learning, Cengage has established a comprehensive learning ecosystem.

A History of Growth and Transformation

The origins of Cengage can be traced back to 1979 when International Thomson Publishing entered the publishing business by acquiring Wadsworth Publishing. In 2000, Thomson Learning was created through a restructuring of International Thomson Publishing. Later that year, Thomson acquired the higher education assets of Harcourt from Reed Elsevier, along with the test prep publisher Arco from IDG Books. The expansion continued in 2002 with Wadsworth's acquisition of F.E. Peacock Publishers Inc.

In 2011, Cengage Learning acquired the National Geographic Society's school publishing unit, combining it with the Global ELT business to launch the National Geographic Learning brand. However, the company faced financial challenges due to significant debt accumulated during its initial buyout and subsequent acquisitions, coupled with declining revenues in the paper textbook market. On July 2, 2013, Cengage Learning filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11.

Emerging from bankruptcy on April 1, 2014, Cengage Learning eliminated approximately $4 billion of its funded debt and secured $1.75 billion in exit financing. The company shifted its focus towards developing digital study guides and other educational supplements, alongside traditional textbooks. In November 2016, Cengage Learning rebranded itself as simply Cengage.

Expansion and Strategic Acquisitions

In addition to organic growth, Cengage has strategically expanded through acquisitions within the publishing industry. These acquisitions have strengthened its market position and broadened its portfolio of educational resources.
