Timi Adelakun: Overcoming Obstacles to Achieve a Historic GPA
Timi Adelakun, a graduate of South Broward High School in Hollywood, Florida, has made history as the first black valedictorian and the student with the highest GPA ever recorded at the school. Coming from a low-income community, his accomplishment holds significant meaning. Timi's GPA of 5.604 is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
Adelakun's parents are from Nigeria, and he is the youngest of three children. Neither of his parents attended college. A particularly poignant aspect of his achievement is that his father was deported over a decade ago and has been unable to celebrate his son's success in person. "He's missed out and it's not his fault. It's not any of our fault," Adelakun said. His father had been in the country for roughly 28 years after coming to the country as a student in 1981. Adelakun says his family is still fighting to bring him back to the country. "He left when I was in the first grade. … I miss his physical presence and involvement," Adelakun said.
Despite these challenges, Timi excelled academically. He funded some of his educational resources with side hustles, such as graphic design and photography, and even walked to school if he missed the bus. He served as the district representative for the school's award-winning theater competition and the vice president for physics club. Adelakun will be heading to Pomona College next year on a scholarship.
He turned to education because he knew it would help him push through the difficult times. “I think because we live in South Florida it came as more of shock because of how diverse we are how much of a melting pot," Adelakun said. He says this achievement makes him hopeful.

Dylan Mazard: An 11.84 GPA and a Head Start on Higher Education
Dylan Mazard, a Gaither High School senior from Tampa, Florida, set a new record for Hillsborough County Schools with an astonishing GPA of 11.84. This may also be the highest ever recorded in the state. Dylan's academic journey began early, taking Florida Virtual High School classes in sixth grade and enrolling in classes at HCC by eighth grade. He then took countless Honors and AP courses in high school. He even spends his summers learning. "Every summer, I would prepare for the following year and just make sure that I would be one step ahead," he said. "So that it would be not only easier for me, but allow me to do more."
Dylan's father, Thomas Mazard, noticed his son was advanced at an early age. When Dylan was three years old, he was doing multiplication tables. Not long after that, he was reading books to his father. "I'm inspired by his work ethics, his levels of intellect," said Thomas Mazard, who is a guidance counselor at Gaither.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dylan completed more than 200 community service hours, volunteering at the Humane Society and tutoring his classmates. Dylan's next stop is MIT, where he plans to major in Computer Science. After that he wants to earn his doctorate and become a software engineer. "I'm a very hard worker, and I feel like if I put my mind to something, I'll be able to achieve whatever it is," he said.
Stephanie Rodas: A First-Generation Student's Historic Achievement
Stephanie Rodas, valedictorian from Carter High School, has made history with the highest grade point average ever recorded since the school opened in 2004 - a whopping 4.88. Rodas has been accepted to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
“There have been so many challenges Stephanie has faced as a first-generation student and sustaining almost a 5.0 GPA through a pandemic is crazy; our school, her parents, and the community are so proud of her…she’s definitely going to inspire many students along the way,” said CHS Principal Ricardo Garcia.
