Navigating Tuition Payments at Washington State University
Paying for college can be a daunting task, but Washington State University (WSU) offers a variety of tuition payment options to help students manage their financial obligations. Understanding these options and associated policies is crucial for ensuring timely payments and avoiding potential late fees or enrollment issues. This article will cover the various payment methods available to WSU students, including electronic checks, credit cards, financial aid, veterans' benefits, third-party billing, wire transfers, and payment plans.
Payment Deadlines
It is important to be aware of payment due dates to avoid late fees. For Fall and Spring semesters, tuition is due on the first day of the semester. For the Summer semester, tuition due dates are tied to course start dates; a late fee will be assessed if tuition is not paid by the nearest due date after your course begins.
Accepted Payment Methods
WSU provides several methods for students to pay their tuition and fees. These include:
Electronic Checks
The university strongly recommends utilizing an electronic check as there is typically no fee associated with this payment method, and the process is simple.
Credit Cards
WSU accepts Visa, American Express, Discover, and MasterCard for online tuition payments made through myWSU. To make a payment, students can view their balance and access the payment portal in the Campus Finances section on the left of their myWSU home page. It's important to note that a service fee is usually charged for credit card payments. Payers will typically find two transactions posted to their credit card: one for the payment of tuition and fees, and one for the service fee (statement description will read “Official Pymts Svc Fee”).

Financial Aid, Scholarships, and State Grants
When financial aid funds are released, current tuition and fee charges posted to a student’s account are paid in full; any residual funds then are distributed to the student. Any authorized aid or pending aid will appear as a credit or a negative number on your account. A federal grant awarded based on financial need, typically not requiring repayment, is the Pell Grant. Students must complete the FAFSA at studentaid.gov to determine eligibility.
Veterans’ Benefits
VA benefits, including the Montgomery GI Bill®*, Vocational Rehabilitation, and spouse/dependent benefits, can be used to pay for distance courses for students who meet specific benefit requirements.
Third-Party Billing
WSU will invoice outside organizations (sponsors) for charges which the sponsor has agreed to pay in support of a student. This process is called Third Party Contract. Third Party Contracts provide the ability for WSU to bill outstanding charges during a specific term. Outstanding charges are defined by the Third Party organization. Some organizations are billed for only amounts owed after grants, scholarships, and/or waivers have been applied. This will authorize a credit to the student’s account and the company/agency will be billed by the University. Please be sure your name and WSU student ID number are included.
Wire Transfers
WSU has teamed up with Flywire to offer an innovative and streamlined way to make domestic and international wire transfers for tuition and on-campus housing payments. It’s fast, simple, and cost effective from any country, any time. Flywire accepts payments from any country - typically in your home currency and works to secure you wholesale foreign exchange rates, which are significantly lower than rates offered by traditional banks. They eliminate hidden fees and ensure your full payment amount and identifying information arrive intact.
Payment Plans
Washington State University is now offering payment plans for students. Payment Plans are on a single term basis. You will need to enroll each term. Enrollment does not carryover to the next term. All of your current term tuition and fees, housing charges, and current term miscellaneous charges on your account will be included in your payment plan. Monthly payments will be automatically drafted from your bank account or credit card that you set up when you enroll.

Important Considerations
- Responsibility for Excess Charges: Students are responsible for payment of any posted charges in excess of financial aid or other benefits (e.g., veterans), and are subject to meeting payment deadlines.
- Payment Application: Payments are applied to prior debts before being applied to current charges.
- Education Tax Credits: The American Opportunity Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit provide tax relief for education-related costs.
Additional Information
For any banking institution that does not want to use Flywire, student can either choose a different bank or have the bank send a Bank Draft which is a paper document that looks a lot like a regular check.
