Getting into Xavier University: A Comprehensive Guide to Admission Requirements

Gaining admission to Xavier University requires careful preparation and a strong application. This guide provides a detailed overview of the academic expectations, standardized testing policies, and other factors considered in the admission process, helping you understand what it takes to stand out.

Academic Expectations: GPA and Coursework

Xavier University is selective in its admission process. While there isn't a fixed minimum GPA, the average GPA for admitted students is around 3.53. This means that successful applicants generally have a mix of A's and B's, with a higher proportion of A's.

A strong academic record is crucial. Students can compensate for a slightly lower GPA by taking harder classes, such as AP or IB courses, demonstrating their willingness to challenge themselves academically.

Holistic Review

It's important to note that Xavier University employs a holistic admission process. This means that your GPA is just one factor among many that are considered. The rigor of your high school coursework, extracurricular activities, test scores (if submitted), personal essays, and letters of recommendation all contribute to the overall assessment of your application.

Standardized Testing: SAT and ACT

Xavier University requires either the SAT or ACT for admission. While the university hasn't explicitly stated a test-optional policy, they do publish average SAT and ACT scores, suggesting that submitting scores is a significant part of the application for most students.

SAT Scores

The average SAT score at Xavier University is 1100 (combined math and reading). To be a competitive applicant, your SAT score should be close to this average. Aiming for a score near or above the 25th percentile of 1105 will significantly increase your chances of admission. The 75th percentile SAT score is 1290.

Superscoring

Xavier University utilizes "superscoring" for the SAT. This means they will consider your highest section scores from multiple test dates and combine them to create your best possible composite score. This policy allows you to focus your preparation efforts on individual sections and take the SAT multiple times to maximize your score.

ACT Scores

The average ACT score at Xavier University is 25. A competitive applicant should aim for a score close to this average. The 25th percentile ACT score is 22, and the 75th percentile score is 29.

Superscoring

Xavier University is understood to superscore the ACT. This means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score. Even though the highest ACT composite you scored on any one test date was 20, Xavier University will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore.

Test-Flexible Policy

Typically, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them." If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students.

Optional Essay

Xavier University considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration.

Acceptance Rate

Last year Xavier University’s acceptance rate was 71.58%. As you can see, Xavier University is getting more and more difficult to get into.

Standing Out From The Crowd

Beyond grades and test scores, Xavier University seeks students who will actively contribute to their community. Here are some ways to make your application stand out:

  • Extracurricular Involvement: Join clubs, sports teams, or other group activities to demonstrate your interests and commitment outside of academics. Cincinnati has tons of ways to be involved beyond just the college.
  • Volunteer Experience: Volunteer in your hometown.
  • Meaningful Summer Activities: Spend your summer doing something that speaks to your values, personal growth, leadership qualities and other less quantifiable characteristics.
  • Compelling Essay: Write a stellar essay that shows Xavier University something they can’t figure out from the other parts of your application.
  • Strong Recommendations: Get teacher recommendations that speak to your character.
  • Timely Application: Apply Before the Deadline. Too many students wait until the last minute to submit their application, and too much can go wrong during this precious time window. Since many students are applying on the last day, it’s possible that XU’s own system crashes.

Program-Specific Requirements

Certain programs at Xavier University have additional admission requirements:

  • College of Nursing: Admission to the College of Nursing is competitive. Strong candidates for admission to the College of Nursing will meet and/or exceed the criteria below. In addition to academics, Xavier will consider all facets of a student's application for admission to the University when considering candidates for the College of Nursing. A student's essays, recommendation(s), resume, activities and awards, demonstrated interest in both Xavier and a career in Nursing, as well as other factors will be considered.
  • Occupational Therapy: Occupational Therapy at Xavier is a Doctoral level degree (Pending Approval). Students who apply will know of their Direct Admit Pathway acceptance by March 1. Direct Admit Pathway students will be required to submit an application to the OTD Program.
  • Music Programs: Admission into the Xavier University Music Production and Music Performance programs is competitive and requires an audition and interview with faculty. After being admitted to the university, anyone interested in majoring in those programs must submit the Music Audition Application.
  • Theatre Program: Admission into the Xavier University Theatre program is competitive. Any student interested in being considered as a Xavier Theatre or Musical Theatre major must audition and/or interview with the Theatre faculty.
  • Philosophy, Politics, and The Public (PPP): This is an honors program with selective admission. Students interested in this major should indicate so on their application for admission. After initial Xavier admission, students will be directed to complete and submit an additional program-specific essay of approximately 750 words.

Additional Considerations for International Students

  • Transcripts: All College or University transcripts must be in English.
  • Credential Evaluation: If educated in a non-English speaking college or university, a Course-by-Course evaluation of college or university work must be evaluated by a United States foreign credential evaluator from the NACES Evaluation Agency. SPANTRAN is recommended. Applicants who utilize SPANTRAN via link will receive a 10% discount on the evaluation.
  • English Language Proficiency: English language proficiency is essential for success at Xavier.

Financial Aid and Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, requires Xavier University to develop and enforce standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress prior to awarding any federal financial aid funds to students. Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) was established to encourage students to successfully complete courses for which federal financial aid is received and to progress satisfactorily toward degree completion.

SAP Criteria

The criteria used to determine SAP are cumulative grade point average, cumulative completion rate (or pace), and maximum time frame for completion of educational objective. At the end of the academic year, following the spring semester, the Office of Student Financial Services reviews the academic progress of all students who received any type of Title IV federal student aid at any point during the academic year.

Completion Rate

Students must successfully complete a minimum of 67% (two-thirds) of cumulative credit hours attempted. Attempted hours are hours for which a charge was incurred, excluding audited hours.

Maximum Time Frame

Students must complete their degree program within 150% of the published length of their degree program in credit hours. For example, if a major requires 120 credit hours to graduate, a student cannot receive financial aid beyond 180 credits attempted, including transfer hours, whether or not financial aid was received for those credits.

SAP Review

Students who received any type of Title IV federal student aid at any point during the academic year will have their academic progress reviewed at the end of spring semester after all grades have been reported. New financial aid recipients (i.e., those students who had never previously applied for aid, or those returning after an absence from Xavier) will have their academic progress reviewed when the Office of Financial Aid receives the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). At the time of the review, students who are not meeting the minimum requirements for SAP will be placed on financial aid suspension.

Financial Aid Suspension and Appeals

Students placed on financial aid suspension are ineligible for federal financial aid for subsequent enrollment periods. Appeal is a process by which a student, who is not meeting the institution's SAP standards for the receipt of federal student aid, petitions the institution for reconsideration of the student's eligibility for Title IV program assistance. When the student is notified of failure to meet SAP requirements, they are offered the opportunity to appeal and are provided with the link to the appeal form and the appeal deadline.
